In this paper, a hardware-in-the-loop simulation platform for MMCs is established, which connects a real time digital simulator (RTDS) and a designed MMC controller with optical fiber. In this platform, the converter valves are simulated with a small time step of 2.5 microsecond in the RTDS, and multicore technology is implemented for the controller so that the parallel valve control is distributed between different cores. Therefore, the designed controller can satisfy the requirements of real-time control. The functions of the designed platform and the rationality for the designed controller are verified through experimental tests. The results show that different modulation modes and various control strategies can be implemented in the simulation platform and that each control objective can been tracked accurately and with a fast dynamic response.
Microcavity plasma devices having characteristic dimensions below $100\;{\mu}m$ have been investigated as a candidate for the next generation of plasma displays. Arrays of inverted pyramid microcavity devices, fabricated in Si with emitting apertures of $(50\;{\mu}m)^2$ and designed for AC or bipolar excitation, demonstrate a luminous efficacy above 6 lm/W at pressures up to and beyond one atmosphere of Ne/Xe mixtures. Also the design of analogous microplasma devices in ceramic multilayer structures or plastic substrates is disccussed.

Smart gels have recently associated with photonic crystals to form photonic gels. Since these photonic gels are capable of reversibly converting the volume change of gels induced in response to external chemical or electric stimuli into characteristic optical signals, they have been considered not only as a good platform for label-free chemical or biological detection, actuators or optical switches but also as a good model system to investigate gel swelling behaviour. Recently, we reported block copolymer photonic gels self-assembled from polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymers, and demonstrated that selective swelling of lamellar structure allows extremely large tunability of the photonic stop band from UV region to IR region ($\lambda$ peak=350~1,600 nm). Herein we report block copolymer photonic gels which exhibit strong tunable optical hysteresis and their applications. As nonlinear responses in swelling of hydrogels were often observed, photonic gels exhibit optical hysteresis with change of external pH. We demonstrate such optical hysteresis can be precisely programmed by controlling ion-pairing affinity. We anticipate that photonic gels with carefully tunned optical hysteresis are applicable to optical memory devices.
The fundamental conception in physics of the propagation of the electromagnetic wave polarization in matter is newly understood as the cardinal keyword in free-space quantum communication technology and cosmology in astrophysics. Interactive visualization of the propagation mechanism of polarized electromagnetism in a medium with its helicity has accordingly received attention from scientists exploiting the protocol of quantum key distribution (QKD) to guarantee unconditional security in cryptography communication. We have provided a dynamic polarization platform for presenting the polarization modes of a transverse electromagnetic wave, converting the state of polarization through the arrangement of optical elements, using Jones vectors calculations in Methematica. The platform graphically simulates the mechanism of production and propagation of the polarized waves in a medium while satisfying Maxwell's equations.
Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) has been used for mapping the surface geomorphology of cloudy planets like Venus as well as the Earth. The cloud-free Mars is also going to be scanned by SAR in order to detect buried water channels and other features under the very shallow subsurface af the ground. According to the 'Mid and Long-term National Space Development Plan' of Korea, SAR satellites, in addition to the EO (Electro-Optical) satellites, are supposed to be developed in the frame of the KOMPSAT (Korean Multi-Purpose Satellite) program. Feasibility of utilizing a SAR payload on KOMPSAT platform has been studied by KARI in collaboration with Astrium U.K. The purpose of the ShR program is Scientific and Civil applications on the Earth. The study showed that KOMPSAT-2 platform can accommodate a small SAR like Astrium’s MicroSAR. In this paper, system aspects of the satellite design are presented, such as mission scenario, operation concept, and capabilities. The spacecraft design is also discussed and conclusion is followed.

The 21st century will see the formation of a“Cyber society”that, while separate form the real world, will cooperate with it, leading to the further expansion and development of world society. Cyber society allows the formation of virtual space through the connection of multiple computers in a network. In this virtual space, multiple users can communicate with each other and can collect and exchange information while moving about freely and engaging in activities. Three main technologies are vital to the construction of the Cyber society: platform technology for converting multimedia information to optical signals and performing digital processing and communication processing on such signals; communications network technology for transferring these signals from one point to another; and application technology for configuring the Cyber society that will be formed on this network. This paper describes platform technology and network technology with an emphasis on their relationship to application technology for configuring the Cyber society, and will also discuss InterSpace, one of the cyber society platform system of the Cyber society.

In-situ observations of nano-scale behavior of nanomaterials are very important to understand onthe nano-scale phenomena associated with phase change, atomic movement, electrical or optical properties, and even reactions which take place in gas or liquid phases. We have developed on the in-situ experimental technologies of nano-materials (nano-cluster, nanowire, carbon nanotube, and graphene, et al.) and their interactions (percolation of metal nanoclusters, inter-diffusion, metal contacts and phase changes in nanowire devices, formation of solid nano-pores, melting behavior of isolated nano-metal in a nano-cup, et al.) by nano-discovery membrane platform [1-4]. Between two microelectrodes on a silicon nitride membrane platform, electrical percolations of metal nano-clusters are observed with nano-structures of deposited clusters. Their in-situ monitoring can make percolation devices of different conductance, nanoclusters based memory devices, and surface plasmonic enhancement devices, et al. As basic evidence on the phase change memory, phase change behaviors of nanowire devices are observed at a nano-scale.

Optical tables provide a platform for the establishment and test of measurement systems which use Laser. Therefore, not only static characteristics such as surface flatness, static stiffness and etc. but dynamic response characteristics is very important design parameter. The dynamic stiffness is generally estimated through the modal test, and compliance is used as a representative performance standard. Recently there is an example of defining the dynamic deflection coefficient and using it as a new performance standard of the dynamic stiffness, but it is not generalized yet in industry. In this study, we verify the validity of existing DDC calculus by making an experiment on granite. And for improvement in damping performance of optical tables, we are going to evaluate the effect of fillers on the compliance, then develop an epoxy adhesive based on the result of this experiment.
We propose a triangular-multicore hollow optical fiber (TMC-HOF) design for uncoupled mode-division and space-division multiplexing. The TMC-HOF has three triangular cores, and each core has three modes: $LP_{01}$ and two split $LP_{11}$ modes. The asymmetric structure of the triangular core can split the $LP_{11}$ modes. Using the proposed structures, nine independent modes can propagate in a fiber. We use a fully vectorial finite-element method to estimate effective index, chromatic dispersion, differential group delay (DGD), and confinement loss by controlling the parameters of the TMC-HOF structure. We confirm that the proposed TMC-HOF shows flattened chromatic dispersion, low DGD, low confinement loss, low core-to-core crosstalk, and low crosstalk between adjacent modes. The proposed TMC-HOF can provide a common platform for MDM and SDM applications.
