  • Non-destructive measurement of zero-dispersion wavelength variation in a dispersion shifted fiber by four-wave mixing technique is carried out. The oscillatory behavior of the four-wave mixing efficiency is utilized for the measurement of the linear dispersion slope and zero-dispersion wavelength. A simple formula useful for engineering estimation of the characteristics of fiber four-wave mixing efficiency is presented.

  • In this paper, we calculate the four coefficients for the quantum theory of multiwave mixing including a local-field correction resulting from dipole-dipole interactions. We make contact with the semiclassical calculations of probe absorption and four-wave-mixing coupling coefficients, and illustrate the effects of local field corrections on resonance-fluorescence and coupled-mode-fluorescence spectra. The method uses the hybrid quantum-Langevin-equation master-equation approach of An and Sargent.

  • Solid-state reactions in Ni/Si multilayered films (MLF) with an overall stoichiometry of $Ni_2Si$, NiSi and $NiSi_2$, induced by ion-beam mixing (IBM) and thermal annealing, were studied by using spectroscopic ellipsometry and magneto-optical spectroscopy as well as x-ray diffraction (XRD). The mixing was performed with Ar+ ions of an energy of 80 keV and a dose of $1.5 x\times10^{16}$ $Ar^+$/$\textrm{cm}^2$. It was shown that the IBM induces structural changes in the Ni/Si MLF, which cannot be detected by XRD but are confidently recognized by the optical method. A thermal annealing at 673 K of the Ni/Si MLF with an overall stoichiometry of NiSi and $NiSi_2$ causes formation of the first η -NiSi phase. The first trace for $NiSi_2$ phase on the background of NiSi one was detected by XRD after an annealing at 1073 K while, according to the optical results, $NiSi_2$ turns out be the dominant phase for the annealed Ni/Si MLF with an overall stoichiometry of $NiSi_2$.

  • We obtain a solution of optical parametric amplification using self-phase modulation within the Kerr media in a nonlinear interferometer with two arms. We show that it is equivalent to the solution driven by four-wave mixing and that the solution of parametric amplification is suitable to generate a parametric gain. We obtain a derivative of power gain with respect to the propagation distance and show that gain-saturation can occur as the beam propagates along the nonlinear arms. We also show a bandwidth characteristic of the parametric amplification driven by nondegenerate four-wave mixing. Numerical examples are given to illustrate that the solution of the parametric amplification can be applied to design and analysis of all-optical devices such as all-optical amplifiers.

  • In this paper, the scheme of a single module for simultaneous operation of all-optical computing circuits, namely half adder and half subtractor, are realized using semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) based logic gates. Optical XOR gate by employing a SOA based Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) configuration is used to get the sum and difference outputs. A carry signal is generated using a SOA-four wave mixing (FWM) based AND gate, whereas, the borrow is generated by employing the SOA-cross gain modulation (XGM) effect. The obtained results confirm the feasibility of our configuration by proving the good level of quality factor i.e. ~5.5, 9.95 and 12.51 for sum/difference, carry and borrow, respectively at 0 dBm of input power.

  • We demonstrate wavelength conversion of 2.5Gb/s optical signals by four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). We investigate the effect of input pump and signal powers on the coversion efficiency, optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and extinction ratio to be a measure of performance in a wavelength converter. As a result, we show that the maximum bit error rate (BER) performance can be obtained by co promising among high-vonversion efficiency (minimum Pprobe), high-OSNR (maximum Pprobe) and low-cross-gain saturation effects (Pprobe kept at least 6dB weaker than Ppump). In our experiment, we obtain optimum performance at +3 dBm pump power and -6dBm signal power. The power penalty incurred in the wavelength conversion can be minimized by careful selection of the input pump and signal powers. We show that about 0.5dB power penalty for 3.2nm wavelength coversion at 10-10 BER is achievable.

  • We have experimentally investigated the fiber four-wave mixing effect on equal spaced multichannel optical transmission system with dispersion shifted fiber. To reduce the fiber four-wave mixing effect, we set the polarization states of the adjacent channels to be orthogonal each other by using polarization controller. In this case, we can reduce the transmission power penalty by 1.5 dB compared with that of equal polarization states.

  • Subpicosecond all-optical switching method based on the simultaneous two-photon coherence exchange is proposed and numerically demonstrated. The optical switching mechanism is based on the optical field induced dark resonance swapping via nondegenerate four-wave mixing processes. For potential applications of ultrafast all-optical switching in fiber-optic communications, 10-THz channel number independent quantum router is discussed.
