  • This paper presents a heuristic algorithm that a mobile robot avoids obstacles using optical flow. Using optical flow, the mobile robot can easily avoid static obstacles without a prior position information as well as moving obstacles with unknown trajectories. The mobile robot in this paper is able to recognize the locations or routes of obstacles, which can be detected by obtaining 2-dimensional optical flow information from a CCD camera. It predicts the possibilities of crash with obstacles based on the comparison between planned routes and the obstacle routes. Then it modifies its driving route if necessary. Driving acceleration and angular velocity of mobile robot are applied as controlling variables of avoidance. The corresponding simulation test is performed to verify the effectiveness of these factors. The results of simulation show that the mobile robot can reach the goal with avoiding obstacles which have variable routes and speed.

  • Despite recent advances in electrical switch architectures, the practical switch performance is limited by both the technological and physical constraints of electrical device and wiring. Though an optical switch can have good features, optical devices are of poor quality. Therefore, we propose and study the switching architecture based on free-space optical interconnections and electrical logic devices. And an exchanging method using packets with a parallel form is introduced to solves the blocking problem of the switch that resulted from switching packets with a serial form. The free-space optical interconnections overcome the defects of electrical switch, such as, the complex connections of the wires. The proposed and demonstrated switch is nonblocking, simple and high performable. Other attractive features of the proposed switch include the guarantee of first-in first-out packet sequence. In this thesis, we also discuss the performance of proposed switch and show the experimental results of the 4$\times$4 switch.

  • In this paper, we present an interpolation schema for image resolution enhancement using fuzzy logic. Proposed algorithm can recover both low and high frequency information in image data. In general, interpolation techniques are based on linear operators which are essentially details in the original image. In our fuzzy approach, the operator itself balances the strength of its sharpening and noise suppressing components according to the properties of the input image data. The proposed interpolation algorithm is performed in three step. First logic reasoning is applied to coarsely interpret the high frequency information. These results are combined to obtain the optical output. Using our approach, resolution of the original image can be applied to various kind of image processing topics such as image enhancement, subpixel edge detection, and filtering.

  • Chest X-ray image cannot be focused in the same manner as optical lenses and the resultant image generally tends to be slightly blurred. Therefore, appropriate methods to improve the quality of chest X-ray image have been studied in this paper. As the frequency domain filters work well for slight blurring and moderate levels of additive noises, we propose an algorithm that is particularly suitable for enhancing chest image. First, the chest image using Gaussian high pass filter and the optimal high frequency emphasis filter shows improvements in the edges and contrast of the flat areas. Second, as compared to using histogram equalization where each pixel of chest image is characterized by a loss of detail and much noises, in using fuzzy logic, each pixel of chest image shows the detail preservation and little noise.

  • The chest X-ray image cannot be focused in the same manner that optical lenses are and the resultant image generally tends to be slightly blurred. Therefore, the methods to improve the quality of chest X-ray image have been studied. In this paper, the inherent noises of the input images are suppressed by adding the Laplacian image to the original. First, the chest X-ray image using an Gaussian high pass filter and an optimal high frequency emphasis filter has shown improvements in the edges and contrast of flat areas. Second, using fuzzy logic_histogram equalization, each pixel of the chest X-ray image shows the normal distribution of intensities that are not overexposed. As a result, the proposed method has shown the enhanced edge and contrast of the images with the noise canceling effect.

  • Uniform weld pool shape is important in determining the weld quality. And weld pool width is one of the most dominant factors of the seld pool shape. In order to control the weld pool width, the fuzzy logic controller, which is well adapted to the complicated nonlinear systems such as welding, was used in this study. The weld pool image was obtained through CCD camera, and the weld pool width was calculated by processing the image. Uaing the calculated width, welding speed, as a control input, was inferred by the fuzzy logic controller. An uniform weld pool width can be successfully obtained regardless of the disturbances in the system.

  • This paper describes design of a (32, 28) Reed Solomon decoder for optical compact disk provides double error detecting and correcting capability. The most complex circuit in the RS decoder is part for solving the error location numbers from error location polynomial, and the circuit has great influence on overall decoder complexity. We use RAM based architecture with Euclid algorithm, Chien search algorithm and Forney algorithm. We have developed VHDL model and Performed logic synthesis using the SYNOPSYS CAD tool. Then, the RS decoder has been implemented with FPGA. The total umber of gate is about 11,000 gates and it operates at 20MHz.

  • Three optical fuzzy calculating modules, MAX/MIN, NOT/THROUGH, and SUP/THROUGH operating modules, are proposed. The MAX/MIN operating on inputted 2 membership functions. The NOT/THROUGH operating module calculates the complement of the membership function. The SUP/THROUGH operating module outputs an image representing the supremum (least upper bound) of the membership function. The THROUGH operation passes the image of the inputted membership function from the entrance to the exit. This paper demonstrates that these modules can output the image into which the modules transform inputted images on the basis of operation on fuzzy logic.

  • On-line phase tracking of an extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and experimental vibration control of a composite beam with a sensing-patch are investigated. We propose a sensing-patch for the compensation of the interferometric non-linearity. In this paper. a sensing-patch that comprises an EFPI and a piezo ceramic(PZT) is fabricated and the characteristics of the sensing-patch are experimentally investigated. A simple and practical logic is applied for the real-time tracking of optical phase of an interferometer Experimental results show that the proposed sensing-patch does not have the non-linear behavior of conventional EFPI and hysteresis of piezoelectric material. Moreover, it has good strain resolution and wide dynamic sensing range. Finally, the vibration control with the developed sensing-patch has been performed using Fuzzy logic controller, and the possibility of sensing-patch as a sensoriactuator is considered.

  • This paper presents a fuzzy relaxation labeling approach incorporated to the fuzzy logic fusion scheme for the classification of multi-sensor remote sensing images. The fuzzy logic fusion and iterative relaxation labeling techniques are adopted to effectively integrate multi-sensor remote sensing images and to incorporate spatial neighboring information into spectral information for contextual classification, respectively. Especially, the iterative relaxation labeling approach can provide additional information that depicts spatial distributions of pixels updated by spatial information. Experimental results for supervised land-cover classification using optical and multi-frequency/polarization images indicate that the use of multi-sensor images and spatial information can improve the classification accuracy.
