  • The dynamics of laser-induced plasma/shock wave and the interaction with a surface in the laser shock cleaning process are analyzed by optical diagnostics. Shock wave is generated by a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser in air or with N$_2$, Ar, and He injection into the focal spot. The shock speed is measured by monitoring the photoacoustic probe-beam deflection signal under different conditions. In addition, nanosecond time-resolved images of shock wave propagation and interaction with the substrate are obtained by the laser-flash shadowgraphy. The results reveal the effect of various operation parameters of the laser shock cleaning process on shock wave intensity, energy-conversion efficiency, and flow characteristics. Discussions are made on the cleaning mechanisms based on the experimental observations.

  • We have observed the short-channel effect, narrow-channel effect and small-geometry effect in terms of a variation of the threshold voltage. For a short-channel effect the threshold voltage was largely determined by the DIBL effect which stimulates more carrier injection in the channel by reducing the potential barrier between the source and channel. The effect becomes more significant for a shorter-channel device. However, the potential, field and current density distributions in the channel along the transverse direction showed a better uniformity for shorter-channel devices under the same voltage conditions. The uniformity of the current density distribution near the drain on the potential minimum point becomes worse with increasing the drain voltage due to the enhanced DIBL effect. This means that considerations for channel-width effect should be given due to the variation of the channel distributions for short-channel devices. For CCDs which are always operated at a pinch-off state the channel uniformity thus becomes significant since they often use a device structure with a channel length of > 4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and a very high drain (or diffusion) voltage. • High-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on multilayer transparent electrodes (MTEs) are reported. The dielectric/metal/dielectric (DMD) multilayer electrode based on a thin silver layer achieved high sheet conductance as small as $6{\Omega}/sp$ and a tuning capability in the optical and electrical properties by engineering the inner and outer dielectric layers. In the conventional normal bottom-emitting structure, a DMD-based OLED can be fabricated with 90% higher forward luminous efficiency and 30% higher external quantum efficiency (EQE) compared to ITO-based devices. Special attention was paid to the optimization method of such MTE structure considering both the injection and optical structures.

  • The effect of n-electrode patterns on the current distribution in active region is investigated in GaN-based blue vertical light emitting diodes (VLEDs). A 3-dimension circuit model is adopted to analyze the current flow patterns in VLEDs. We had fabricated VLEDs having different n-electrode patterns, measured their current-voltage characteristics, and compared to the numerical simulation. It turns out that the current spreading in VLEDs is strongly dependent on the n-electrode pattern. Some design guidelines for n-electrode patterns to produce uniform current injection are presented.

  • Cell fusion device is an artificial equipment which fuses electrically two types of cells fed from the respective micropump to the fusion chamber by electric pulses. In this case, the detective sensor of flowing cell, along with passage, is required to control the time of pulses applied to cell and the injection of cells which are fed from inlet to micropump. There are two methods of detection of flowing cell; optical, impedance method. The difference of output for optical sensor is about 426mV for 805nm wavelength. about 37mV for 665nm wavelength. In impedance method, sensor output is 132.33mV at middle point and 117.10mV at edge point in the channel. Experimental results show that the optimal frequency range of sensor output is Iron 50Hz to 400Hz.

  • The effect of the heat treatment on electrochromic properties of $MoO_3$ thin films is investigated by studing optical modulation, optical density, response time, and cyclic voltammetry. From the results of XRD analysis, heat-treated at $450^{\circ}C$ in air for 1 hour $MoO_3$ thin films are found to be crystalline while as-deposited film and heat-treated at low temperature (${\leq}300^{\circ}C$) are amorphous. The electrochrornic devices using as-deposited $MoO_3$ films exhibits good electrochromic properties compare to those using the heat treated $MoO_3$ films. It has shown that the heat-treatment affected the stability and the electrochromic properties of $MoO_3$ films.

  • The electrons injected into a laser wakefield undergo betatron oscillation and give rise to the emission of intense X-ray radiation. To investigate the generation conditions of the X-rays, the relativistic motion of an electron injected in an off-axis position has been simulated with wakefield profiles which are pre-calculated with a two-dimensional particle-in-cell code. The wakefield with a plasma density of $1.78{\times}10^{18}\;cm^{-3}$ is generated by the laser with an intensity of $1.37{\times}10^{18}\;W/cm^2$ and a pulse width of 30 fs. From the calculation of the single particle motion, the characteristics of the betatron radiation are investigated in the time domain. As the transverse injection position increases, the power and the duration time of the radiation increase, but the width of each pulse decreases.
