Optical Fiber Daylighting System Combined with LED Lighting and CPV based on Stepped Thickness Waveguide for Indoor Lighting

  • We present a design and optical simulation of a cost-effective hybrid daylighting/LED system composed of mixing sunlight and light-emitting diode (LED) illumination powered by renewable solar energy for indoor lighting. In this approach, the sunlight collected by the concentrator is split into visible and non-visible rays by a beam splitter. The proposed sunlight collector consists of a Fresnel lens array. The non-visible rays are absorbed by the solar photovoltaic devices to provide electrical power for the LEDs. The visible rays passing through the beam splitters are coupled to a stepped thickness waveguide (STW) by tilted mirrors and confined by total internal reflection (TIR). LEDs are integrated at the end of the STW to improve the lighting quality. LEDs’ light and sunlight are mixed in the waveguide and they are coupled into an optical fiber bundle for indoor illumination. An optical sensor and lighting control system are used to control the LED light flow to ensure that the total output flux for indoor lighting is a fixed value when the sunlight is inadequate. The daylighting capacity was modeled and simulated with a commercial ray tracing software (LighttoolsTM). Results show that the system can achieve 63.8% optical efficiency at geometrical concentration ratio of 630. A required accuracy of sun tracking system achieved more than ±0.5o . Therefore, our results provide an important breakthrough for the commercialization of large scale optical fiber daylighting systems that are faced with challenges related to high costs.

  • In this paper, a novel optical measuring system for the measurement of nonuniform electric field was proposed. The electric field distorted by the discharges was detected through proposed optical measuring system based on the Pockets effect and Mach-Zehnder interferometer. In order to produce distorted electric field, corona discharge was generated from needle-plane electrode in air and detected by optical measuring system. This optical measuring system is constructed by He-Ne laser, single mode optical fiber, $2{\times}2$ 50/50 beam splitter, $LiNbO_3$ Pockets cell, photo detector and PC. In this system, output signal of Pockels sensor is measured by digital oscilloscope and transferred to the PC for recording and statistical processing. Through this paper, a promising possibilities of proto-type optical measuring system were evinced.

  • By incorporating a polarization-diversity loop configuration, we have demonstrated the inline switching of transmission and reflection spectra of one of two short-period fiber gratings (SPFGs) with different resonance wavelengths without reconfiguring the filter structure. The proposed filtering apparatus consists of a fiber-pigtailed polarization beam splitter, two SPFGs, and three quarter-wave plates (QWPs). The proposed filter can independently choose the transmission or reflection spectrum of each SPFG through the appropriate adjustment of the orientation angles of the QWPs within the filter without additional optical switches and couplers. The average insertion loss, band rejection ratio, and side-mode suppression ratio of the fabricated filter were measured as ~4.59, ~17.88, and ~19.67dB, respectively.

A Novel Shared Segment Protection Algorithm for Multicast Sessions in Mesh WDM Networks

  • This paper investigates the problem of protecting multicast sessions in mesh wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) networks against single link failures, for example, a fiber cut in optical networks. First, we study the two characteristics of multicast sessions in mesh WDM networks with sparse light splitter configuration. Traditionally, a multicast tree does not contain any circles, and the first characteristic is that a multicast tree has better performance if it contains some circles. Note that a multicast tree has several branches. If a path is added between the leave nodes on different branches, the segment between them on the multicast tree is protected. Based the two characteristics, the survivable multicast sessions routing problem is formulated into an Integer Linear Programming (ILP). Then, a heuristic algorithm, named the adaptive shared segment protection (ASSP) algorithm, is proposed for multicast sessions. The ASSP algorithm need not previously identify the segments for a multicast tree. The segments are determined during the algorithm process. Comparisons are made between the ASSP and two other reported schemes, link disjoint trees (LDT) and shared disjoint paths (SDP), in terms of blocking probability and resource cost on CERNET and USNET topologies. Simulations show that the ASSP algorithm has better performance than other existing schemes.

  • In fiber optic networks, system size and cost can be significantly reduced by development of optical components through planar optical waveguides. One important step to realize the compact optical devices is to develop planar optical amplifier to compensate the losses in splitter or other components. Planar amplifier provides optical gain in devices less than tens of centimeters long, as opposed to fiber amplifiers with lengths of typically tens of meters. To achieve the same amount of gain between the planar and fiber optical amplifier, much higher Er doping levels responsible for the gain than in the fiber amplifier are required due to the reduced path length. These doping must be done without the loss of homogeniety to minimize Er ion-ion interactions which reduce gain by co-operative upconversion. Sol-gel process has become a feasible method to allow the incorporation of Er ion concentrations higher than conventional glass melting methods. In this work, Er-doped $SiO_2$-A1$_2$ $O_3$ films were prepared by two different method via sol -Eel process. Tetraethylorthosilicate(TEOS)/aluminum secondary butoxide [Al (OC$_4$ $H_{9}$)$_3$], methacryloxypropylcnethoxysaane(MPTS)/aluminum secondary butofde [Al(OC$_4$ $H_{9}$)$_3$] systems were used as starting materials for hosting Er ions. Er-doped $SiO_2$-A1$_2$ $O_3$ films obtahed after heat-treating, coatings on Si substrate were characterized by X-ray din action, FT-IR, and N-IR fluorescence spectroscopy. The luminescence properties for two different processing procedure will be compared and discussed from peak intensity and life time.

  • 금속박막이 포함된 측면 연마 광섬유 결합기의 편광 선택적 결합 특성에 관한 이론적 연구 결과를 보고한다. 직교 모드이론을 이용하여 다양한 구조 조건에서 소자의 결합 특성을 분석하였다. 금속 박막의 두께가 증가함에 따라 TE 모드사이의 결합의 세기는 급격히 약해지는 반면에 TM 모드의 결합의 세기는 커짐을 보였다. 높은 편광 소멸비와 낮은 삽입 손실을 가지는 편광 분리기의 설계 조건을 제시하였다.

FO-CDMA 통신망에서 PCAE와 PCAD 동작특성 분석 (Performance Analysis of the PCAE and PCAD in FO-CDMA Communication Network)

  • Parallel Coupler Access Encoder(PCAE)와 Parallel Coupler Access Decoder(PCAD)를 이용한 FO-CDMA(Fiber-Optic Code Division Multiple Access)시스템에서 광정합필터 특성을 실험을 통해 분석하였다. PCAE와 PCAD를 구성하고 있는 즉, 1xN splitter와 Nx1 combiner사이에 접속된 광지연선로의 길이비율을 광직교코드 생성알고리즘에 의해 결정하였고, 부/복호화 과정 및 시그템 성능을 peak to side-lobe ratio(PSR)를 구하여 기존에 제시된 결과와 비교하였다. 기존의 연구에서는 SCAE 및 SCAD를 이용하여 일차신호만을 고려하여 시스템의 성능을 분석하여 성능평가가 정확하지가 않았다. SCAE 및 SCAD는 커플러수를 증가함에 따라 여러 형태의 간섭신호들을 가지므로, 이러한 신호들이 시스템 성능을 현저히 열화 시킨다. 본 논문에서는 $\alpha$(coupling coefficient)값이 커질수록 PCAE와 PCAD를 이용한 PSR이 향상됨을 밝혔고 FO-CDMA 통신망의 성능을 개선하기 위해서는 SCAE와 분석 SCAD 구조보다는 PCAE와 PCAD 구조가 적합함을 제시하였다.

  • In this paper, a Optical Voltage Transformer has been designed and fabricated to improve temperature stability caused by materials properties and insulation in measuring system, using single crystal $Bi_{12}SiO_{20}$ as Pockels effect cells for Gas Insulated Switchgear[GIS] System. LD[wavelength: 850nm] was used as optical source, InGaAs as optical detector to measure optical power, Polarizing Beam Splitter as Polarizer and Analyzer, and Multi-mode Optical-fiber[62.5/$125{\mu}m$] as Light transmission line. OPT was assembled in order to pockels effect, and adopted direct electric field type. The linearity of OPT maintains variation for applied voltage range from 100V - 3000V during the test of electric property, As the temperature was changed from $25^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$. the result of this study shows that characteristics of OPT are good, and it can be reflected for practical optical sensors in GIS system.

편광 상이 루프 구조 기반 Lyot형 고차 광섬유 빗살 필터 (Lyot-Type High-Order Fiber Comb Filter Based on Polarization-Diversity Loop Structure)

  • In this paper, we propose a Lyot-type optical fiber comb filter based on a polarization-diversity loop structure (PDLS), which has flat-top pass bands and multiwavelength switching capability. Generally, the PDLS can remove the dependency of the filter on input polarization. The proposed filter is composed of a polarization beam splitter, two half-wave plates (HWPs), and two polarization-maintaining fiber loops concatenated with a $60^{\circ}$ offset between their principal axes. By controlling two HWPs, it can operate in a flat-top band mode or a lossy flat-top band mode with an inherent insertion loss of ~3.49dB. In particular, flat-top bands can be interleaved in both modes, which cannot be realized in a Lyot-Sagnac comb filter based on a fiber coupler. Compared with Solc-type high-order comb filters with the same order, the proposed filter shows sharper transition between pass and stop bands.
