  • A new type slider with optical components is going to be introduced on market for portalbe and high capacity disk drive, and it will show a great potential for high performance drive in the paper the dynamic behavior and static characteristics of silder for a small form factor optical disk drive have been investigated numerically by an in-house simulation code using FEM. A curvature effect is found when a slider is applied to a relatively small disk, which makes rolling characteristics worse due to the negative pressured generated at the air bearing surface because of the curvature of small disk diameter.

  • With the increase of storage density and data transfer rates in optical disk drive, mechanical issues, mainly noise and vibration, become critical. Rubber materials are extensively used in various machine design application, mainly for vibration/shock/noise control devices. However, there are still a lot of difficulties in the use of designing the rubber components with complex shape and under pre-deformed state. It was demonstrated in that the variation of rubber component stiffness with the pre-deformed state were calculated by the finite element method and the reliability of numerical results were checked by compared with the measuring the deflection values. This paper presents a efficient design method of rubber mounts for anti-vibration of an optical disk thrive. With an empirical equation to estimate elastic modulus from hardness, and dynamic characteristics of rubber material of a cylindrical shape, this method is capable of predicting the dynamic characteristics of rubber components at design stage.

  • As high performance and high speed have been accomplished by technology of optical disk drive. optical disk drives have gradually high percentage of the market share in market of storage devices. This technology helps to improve the quality of record/reproduction. However, simultaneously it causes various problems in the structural aspect and increases noise largely. Especially at high speed, dominant noise is more influenced by fluid noise than by structure-borne noise. The purpose of this study is that reduce the air-born noise in optical disk drive as it decreases a quantity of flow by using a micro muffler. The micro muffler is a miniaturized muffler. The muffler is used widely by solution to reduce air-borne noise which is generated by flow. According to frequency band of the noise source, it can be applied by muffler of various forms. In this study, we examined the acoustic characteristics of the micro muffler and applied it to reduction of the ODD noise. It could get an excellent noise reduction in high frequency band through the decrease of an inner flow. But it could not get a noise reduction in low frequency band.

  • Servo performance of a disk drive is greatly affected by the mechanical resonance frequencies of the head gimbal assembly(HGA). It is important (actor to allow broader bandwidth for servo system in improving overall drive performance. In this paper, an optimal design for ODD suspension is attempted to increase resonance frequencies. It was decided that the first resonant frequency in tracking direction was higher than 5㎑. • In optical disk drive(ODD), pickup actuator, which comprises a key part of an optical disk drive equipment. must be thin. compact, and high sensitive. Low tilt is also an important requirement for the actuator, since optical disks are to high density. This tilt occurs from around the axis parallel to the tangential and radial direction of the disk. The main reason of the moment is the coupling effect between focus driving system and tracking driving system. This paper analyzed tut quantity due to focusing and tracking force through coupled fields analysts with electromagnetic analysis and structural analysis.

  • The purpose of this paper is to design a pick-up for the small form factor optical disk drive and to fabricate a micro-compensatory lens for the pick-up using the micro-compression molding process. At design stage, the optical elements including the objective lens and the compensatory lens are miniaturized. The height of pick-up and free working distance are designed as 2mm and 0.2% respectively. To analyze the fabricated micro-compensatory lens, the system was analyzed using the surface profile of the fabricated micro-compensatory lens and CODE V which is commercial software. The RMS wave front aberration of the system using fabricated micro-compensatory lens is 0.01677λ which is lower than Marechal's criterion, 0.07λ.

  • Through the data transfer race in industry since 1990s, the operational speed of optical disk drive(ODD) becomes commonly over 10,000 rpm. Such high speed operation inevitably causes the vibration, which is also the disturbances in the read-write process of pick-up servo-controller. Generally the vibration disturbance problem can be solved by the vibration isolation using the rubber mount and the increase of robustness of the pick-up servo-controller. Optical disk itself has not been targeted for the vibration reduction, because it is manufactured under the standardized format. In this paper we focused on the increase of critical speed of optical disk, that is, the improvement of dynamic characteristics, with the control of residual stresses which are come from the injection molding process. To do this, first, the residual stresses induced from the injection molding process are calculated using finite element method. The major design parameters of the process conditions are flow rate and melt temperature, which control the residual stresses in optical disk. Second, the critical speed of optical disk is calculated with modal analysis considering residual stress distributions. It was found out that the critical speed can be improved by the control of operational parameters in the injection molding process.

  • A multi-beam optical disk drive is presented as a method for improving the effective data transfer rate by increasing the beam spot number formed on an optical disk. The beam rotating actuator is necessary for putting multi-beam on more than one track. The beam rotating actuator is made up of piezoelectric material, high stiffness wire hinge and dove prism. The actuator has good frequency response above 1KHz and suitable operational range. The dynamic equation for the actuator is derived.

  • In oprical disk drives, surface defects on a disk distort tracking error signal and disturb a precision tracking control.. A conventional method against disk defect is held the tracking control signal when a defective portion is detected. However, if the defective portion is getting longer, objective lens will get away from following track. In order to keep the postion of spot from following track, the servo system must predict tracking error and control the object lens in the defective portion. A tracking control system for optical disk drives was proposed recently based on both Coprime Factorization(CF) and Zero Phase Erro. Tracking(ZPET) control. The system was proposed for overcome the limit of previously tracking error. But there were no research about the method against the defective portion. This paper proposes a new and simple ZPET construct. as a new method against the defective portion. From experimental results, we have proved that proposed method improves the performance against the defective portion, decreases the uncertainty of a model, and requires less memory than the previously proposed method.

  • The disturbance observer (DOB) has been widely utilized fer high precision and high speed motion control application. However, it still lacks the analysis for the robustness brought by using DOB. This paper summarizes six guidelines for the design of DOB taking into account the robustness and control performance in case of the second order system. For effectiveness of the proposed guideline, the actual implementation and experimental results of the DOB is compared in the Optical Disk Drive(ODD) servo system. In the DVD player and DVD-ROM drive, the guidelines of DOB are useful, and the disturbance rejection performance is improved under the DOB system.
