  • A new fabrication technique of long-period fiber gratings with periodically surface-etched structures is proposed. Transmission characteristics of the periodically surface-etched long-period fiber gratings are improved by changing strain because of variation of coupling strength between the core and the cladding modes. The sensitivities of the periodically surface-etched long-period fiber gratings to strain, torsion, and ambient refractive index were measured. The strain and the torsion sensitivities were measured to be $-0.033\;dB/\mu\varepsilon$ and -1.30 nm m/rad, respectively. The ambient index sensitivity was measured to be -31.33 nm/RIU from a range from 1.33 to 1.42.

  • Benzodithiophene based organic semiconducting polymer was designed and synthesized by stille coupling reaction. The structure of polymer was confirmed by NMR and IR. The weight average molecular weight ($M_w$) of polymer was 8,400 using GPC with polydispersity index of 1.4. The thermal, optical and electrochemical properties of polymer were characterized by TGA and DSC, UV-vis absorption and cyclic voltammetry. OTFT device using PBDT-10 exhibited the mobility of $7.2{\times}10^{-5}\;cm^2\;V^{-1}\;s^{-1}$ and $I_{on}/I_{off}$ of $2.41{\times}10^3$. The film morphology and crystallinity of PBDT-10, was studied using AFM and XRD.

  • Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a noninvasive optical imaging technique that indirectly assesses neuronal activity by measuring changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin in tissues using near-infrared light. fNIRS has been used not only to investigate cortical activity in healthy human subjects and animals but also to reveal abnormalities in brain function in patients suffering from neurological and psychiatric disorders and in animals that exhibit disease conditions. Because of its safety, quietness, resistance to motion artifacts, and portability, fNIRS has become a tool to complement conventional imaging techniques in measuring hemodynamic responses while a subject performs diverse cognitive and behavioral tasks in test settings that are more ecologically relevant and involve social interaction. In this review, we introduce the basic principles of fNIRS and discuss the application of this technique in human and animal studies.

  • We have investigated the magnetic domain structure and the thermal stability of magnetotransport properties of IrMn biased spin-valves containing Co, CoFe and NiFe. The magnetic domain structures were imaged using a magneto-optical indicator film(MOIF) technique. To investigate the thermal stability, magnetoresistance(MR) was measured at annealing temperature(TANN) and room temperature($T_{RT}$) followed by the annealing. Domain imaging reveal that the increase of annealing temperature led to changes in the exchange coupling between the two ferromagnet(FM) layers through nonmagnetic layer rather than between FM and antiferromagnet. unlike the NiFe biased IrMn spin valve with large domains, MOIF pictures of Co and CoFe biased IrMn spin valve structures show the formation of many small microdomains. The magnetic structure, as revealed by the domain images, appeared unchanged while the MR dropped dramatically. From the combined giant magnetoresistance(GMR) and MOIF results, it was apparent that the decrease of MR ratio was not related to the spin valve magnetic structure up to about $350^{\circ}C$($T_{RT}$ ).

  • The GaP crystals are growth by Synthesis Solute Diffusion(SSD) method and its properties are investigated. Etch pits density along vertical direction of ingot is increased from 3.8${\times}$10$^4$cm$\^$-2/ of first freeze to 2.3${\times}$10$\^$5/cm$\^$-2/ of last freeze part. The carrier concentration and mobilities are measured to 197.49$\textrm{cm}^2$/V. sec and 6.75${\times}$10$\^$15/cm$\^$-3/ at room temperature. The temperature dependence of optical energy gap is empilically fitted to E$\_$g/(T)=2.3383-(6.082${\times}$10$\^$-4/T${\times}$/(373.096+T)[eV]. Photo-luminescence spectra measured at low temperature are consist with sharp line-spectra near band-gap energy and radiative recombination between shallow Si-donor to Zn-acceptor and its phonon reprica, and broad emission. The infrared absorption in GaP is cause to phonon coupling modes of TO, LO, LA, TA$_1$, TA$_2$and vibration modes of Ga$_2$O, Si-donor and Zn-acceptor, respectively.

  • We report strong exciton transition and exciton-phonon couplings in photoluminescence (PL) of ZnO thin films grown on MgO/sapphire (buffer/substrate) by plasma-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The PL spectra at 10 K showed the intensity of the dominant emission, donor-bound exciton transition of front surface (top surface, the latter part in growth) is found to be about 100 times higher than that of back surface (in-depth bottom area, the initial part), while the room temperature PL spectra showed dominant contributions from the free exciton emissions and phonon-replicas of free excitons for front surface and back surface, respectively, It could be attributed to the strong contributions of exciton-phonon coupling. Time resolved PL spectra reveal that the life time of exciton recombination from the front surface are longer than those from back surface. This is most probably due to the fact that reduction of non-radiative recombination in the front surface. This investigation indicates that the existence of native defects or trap centers which can be reduced by the proper initial condition in growth and the exciton-phonon interaction couplings play an important role in optical properties and crystal quality of ZnO thin films.

  • Natural rubber(NR)-polyacrylamide(PAAm) graft copolymers(GP)(toluene soluble GP : TSGP, water dispersible GP : WDGP) have been synthesized as coupling agents by pre-emulsification methods based on "inverse emulsion graft polymerization" technique. The polymerization was carried out at $65^{\circ}C$ using Azobisisobytyro nitrile(AIBN) as an initiator in the inverse emulsion system formed by inxing NR toluene solution with inverse emulsion of awueous AAm solution emulsified with $Tween^{\#}$ 80 in toluene. The mechanism of inverse emulsion graft copolymerization was studied on AAm conversion, % grafting, grafting efficiency, NR conversion, production ratio of TSGP and amount of GP(sum of TSGP and WDGP). The reaction has been confirmed through use of optical microscope to proceed via adsorption of emulsifier colloid particles onto the stretched NR molecule. From the analysis of the effects of various polymerization conditions on the grafting, it has also been found that the present rection system can easily yield high(over 90%) grafting efficiency and AAm conversion and relatively high(over 80%) NR conversion.onversion.

  • We present the fabrication and measured performance of a wavelength tunable Butt coupled DBR-LD. An average coupling efficiency between active layer and passive waveguide layer was measured over 85%per facet, and the average threshold current was 21 ㎃ for the waveguide integrated DBR laser. High output power of Butt coupled DBR-LD was obtained over 25 ㎽. As high as 25 ㎽ of output power was achieved by the butt coupled method. The maximum wavelength tuning range is about 7.4 nm, and the side mode suppression ratio was more than 40 ㏈ using 1.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ InGaAsP waveguide layer.

  • The effect of inter-band transition on surface plasmon resonance in gold thin film was investigated. We induced localized inter-band transition in the film by using incident light on its surface from a green laser (532 nm) source, and the surface plasmon resonance for inter-band transition was investigated at different wavelengths. It was determined that the reflectivity of blue light (450 nm) was significantly reduced in the region where the green laser was incident. We demonstrated that this decrease is mainly due to the coupling between the blue light and the surface plasmon resonance of excited electrons in higher energy states, based on experimental results for the incident and polarization angle-dependent reflectivity of the blue light.

  • In this paper, we quantitatively analyze the effect of lens aberration on the degradation of beam-coupling efficiency of a tiled coherent-beam combining system. The Zernike polynomial is used to quantify the aberration of the lens, and Fresnel diffraction is applied to numerically simulate the change in the peak light intensity when combined at a distance. The results of this paper will be useful for quantitative prediction of the beam-combining efficiency that is degraded by aberration of the lens, and it is expected to be helpful for the optimal design of a practical tiled coherent beam-combining system.
