  • The electroluminescence (EL) intensities of GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are estimated based on their photoluminescence (PL) properties. The PL intensity obtained under open-circuit conditions is divided into two parts: the PL intensity under a forward bias lower than the optical turn-on voltage, and the difference between the PL intensities under open-circuit conditions and under forward bias. The luminescence induced by photoexcitation under a constant forward bias lower than the optical turn-on voltage is primarily the PL from the excited area of the LED. In contrast the intensity difference, obtained by subtracting the PL intensity under the forward bias from that under open-circuit conditions, contains the EL induced by the photocarriers generated during photoexcitation. In addition, a reverse photocurrent is generated during photoexcitation under constant forward bias across the LED, and can be correlated with the PL-intensity difference. The relationship between the photocurrent and PL-intensity difference matches well the relationship between the injection current and EL intensity of LEDs. The ratio between the photocurrent generated under a bias and the short-circuit current is related to the ratio between the PL-intensity difference and the PL intensity under open-circuit conditions. A relational expression consisting of the ratios, short-circuit current, and PL under open-circuit conditions is proposed to estimate the EL intensity.

  • The method of characteristic matrix used in the calculation of multi-layered optical coating is applied to the analysis of DFB waveguide with arbitrary structure of grating by plecewise approximation where the DFB structure is devided into many sections in which the gain and period, amplitude and phase of DFB structure are assuced to be constant in each section. The DFB structure with two section is analyzed using this method of C-matrix. The possible applications for photonic devices using DFB waveguides are proposed.

  • In nonlinear optics, the properties of nonlinear optical responses such as polarization and nonlinear analysis of the nonlinear surfaces were investigated using the jellium model by optical second harmonic generation. The nonlinear response of the Al metal surfaces were calculated using TDLDA. Band structure, lattice constant and bulk modulus of the Al metal were investigated. Effective potential and electron density were compared by changing different.

  • In this paper, we propose an optimum design method for optical pick-up actuators. Using this method, we can design an optimal pick-up actuator having the required tracking/focusing performances. Also, the designed actuator has the small mass, force constant for small size of magnetic circuit and large resistance for reduction of heat generation. Simulation results show that this method can be potentially implemented in all the pick-up actuators.

Each parameter occurs changes of specific characteristics of optical sensor system. The influences of performance and characteristics variation of optical current sensor are described in accordance with the changes of optical output power, optical bias point which is called phase difference, and a specific constant related to sensor material and wavelength of light source.

  • We analyze the linear equalizers used in optically amplified on-off-keyed (OOK) systems to combat chromatic dispersion (CD) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD), and we derive the mathematical minimum mean squared error (MMSE) performance of these equalizers. Currently, the MMSE linear equalizer for optical OOK systems is obtained by simulations using adaptive approaches such as least mean squared (LMS) or constant modulus algorithm (CMA), but no theoretical studies on the optimal solutions for these equalizers have been performed. We model the optical OOK systems as square-law nonlinear channels and compute the MMSE equalizer coefficients directly from the estimated optical channel, signal power, and optical noise variance. The accuracy of the calculated MMSE equalizer coefficients and MMSE performance has been verified by simulations using adaptive algorithms.

  • A novel all-optical gain-controlled (AOGC) bidirectional amplifier is proposed and demonstrated in a compact structure. The AOGC function using fiber Bragg grating (FBG) pairs controls both directional signals independently, and combinations of optical interleavers and isolators suppress Rayleigh backscattering (RB) noise. The amplifier achieves high and constant gain with a wide dynamic input signal range and low noise figure. The performance does not depend on the input signal conditions, whether static-state or transient signals, or whether there is symmetric or asymmetric data traffic on bidirectional transmission. Transmission comparison experiments between invariable symmetrical and random variable asymmetric bidirectional data traffic verify that the all-optical gain control and bidirectional amplification functions are successfully combined into this proposed amplifier.

  • In this paper, some parameters are studied for the performance improvement of a bulk optical current sensor. The performance of optical current sensor is influenced by current measuring range, Verdet constant change due to temperature change, temperature variation of wave plate, signal to noise ratio of optical transmitter/receiver, optical bias mismatch. Two types of optical current sensors are implemented and tested in the current range from 10 ampere to 200 ampere.
