  • We demonstrate a time- and wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical network system employing a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser array-based optical line terminal transceiver and a tunable bidirectional optical subassembly-based optical network terminal transceiver. A packet error-free operation is achieved after a 40 km single-mode fiber bidirectional transmission. We also discuss an arrayed waveguide grating, a photo detector array based on complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor photonics technologies, and low-cost key devices for deployment in access networks.

  • A novel mode analysis method and differential mode delay measurement technique for a multimode optical fiber based on optical frequency domain reflectometry has been proposed for the first time. We have used a conventional OFDR with a tunable external cavity laser and a Michelson interferometer. A few-mode optical multimode fiber was prepared to test our proposed measurement technique. The differential mode delay (DMD) of the sample fiber was measured to be 16.58 ps/m with a resolution of 1.5 ps/m. We have also compared the OFDR measurement results with those obtained using a traditional time-domain measurement method.

  • As an extension of Visible Light Communication, Optical Camera Communications (OCC) will be a promising service for smart devices. Especially in line of sight marketing service and indoor localization application, by using camera which exists in smart devices, small amount of data (url link) can be broadcasted or find direction from the illumination system. This paper introduces the operation of wireless communications technology that transmits optical information from optical light source to camera, called Optical Camera Communications.

  • The wavelength demultiplexer is an essential component in optical transmission systems using wavelength-division multiplexing(WDM), which can increase the number of channels and information capacity of optical fibers. For optical telecommunication, much attention has been given to demultiplexing two wavelengths in the 1.3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of low dispersion band and 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of low loss window. Various integrated-optical devices have been proposed to perform this function, including conventional directional couplers, asymmetric Y-branching devices, asymmetric Mach-Zehnder interferometers and two-mode interference devices. • We propose and demonstrate a novel optical pulse multiplier applicable to OTDM (Optical Time Division Multiplexing) systems using cascaded long-period fiber gratings. We have exploited the fact that each mode in a fiber has a different propagation constant to obtain time delays among optical pulses. The proposed scheme could realize high-frequency optical pulse multiplication for optical short pulse trains. We have successfully implemented two, four, and eight times multiplications with the maximum repetition rate of 416.7 ㎓. The obtained pulse delays are well matched with the simulated ones.

  • A simple multi-channel spectrum analyzer using an InGaAs array sensor and a diffraction grating is proposed and developed for high-capacity optical transport networks. With the developed multichannel spectrum analyzer, we could measure signal power, wavelength, and optical signal-to-noise ratio of each channel for multi-channel optical signals with 100 GHz and 50 GHz channel spacing, simultaneously. We could measure each channel power and wavelength with a deviation of less than 0.2 dB and 0.063 nm, respectively. We have obtained optical signal-to-noise ratio with a deviation of less than 1.0 dB compared with conventional optical spectrum analyzer in the wide input power range between -42 dBm and -27 dBm per channel.

  • In this paper, we address the issue of how to improve performance of integrated optical path and optical packet. For supporting ultra-high-speed traffic, integration of optical paths and packets in a switch is one of key techniques in New Generation Networks. However, the wavelength allocation for optical packets and optical paths has not been efficiently resolved yet because there lacks of a systematic model for evaluating performance of the integrated switch. This paper models the operation of the integrated switch as a system of two servers, one for optical paths and the other for optical packets. From the model, we utilize Newton method to find an optimal policy for sharing of wavelength resources. Afterwards, we propose an algorithm to dynamically allocate wavelength resources in an integrated switch. Finally, we evaluate performance of that algorithm.
