  • At present, the fabrication of optical filter for optical communication mostly depends on handwork, and only a few companies are propelling semi-automatic systems compounded with automatic and hand-operated methods. The measurement evaluation of optical filters is not commonly useful, so it causes difficulties in the producing field. And the packaging process becomes a very unstable process because the filters are judged from the results that they are not measured and immediately packaged during that process. In this situation, the automatic assembly system of optical filter for communication is extremely important and has begun to make its appearance as the most necessary technology for developing optical communication component with high-functionality. In this paper, we constructed systems of assembly and performance evaluation for micro optical collimator. And by using that, we designed a system capable of performance evaluation and assembly of film filter of about 30 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness as well as optical filter for common communication.

  • In this paper, we have proposed and demonstrated a variable optical attenuator (VOA) incorporating a dual-fiber collimator and a bimetallic actuator. The optical attenuation between input and output single-mode fibers was tuned by tilting the angle of a reflection mirror fixed on the bimetal. The bimetal was heated or cooled by a thermoelectric cooler (TEC) and then moved the reflection mirror, due to bending and unreeling. The desired optical attenuation can be obtained through adjusting the electrical input into the TEC. The fabricated device showed 0.5 dB of insertion loss, 0.2 dB of maximum polarization-dependent loss, and 40 dB of dynamic range. The response time was measured to be about 5 s.

  • Up to now, Collimators have been generally produced by handwork and only a few companies have produced by semi-automatic system. Under this situation, automatic system for assembly of optical collimator has risen as a most essential technique in the development of optical communication components. In this study, it was constructed to develop optical collimators with high functionality and We manufactured optical collimators with a GRIN rod lens using automatic system. Therefore, we worked a performance test through a comparison of collimators made by automatic system and handwork with angle alignment, beam size. Also we compared common product with auto-manufactured sample. As a result, it brought a reduction of the tact time and an improvement of an efficiency and a productivity of optical collimators. therefore it was found that automatic system was indispensable for materialization of optical collimators with high functionality.

  • An optical microphone based on a dual-core fiber collimator and a membrane type micromirror serving as an optical head and a reflective diaphragm respectively was implemented. The micromirror diaphragm is suspended by a thin silicon bar linked with a frame, thus it is subject to a displacement induced by acoustic waves. The optical head incorporating two collimators integrated in a single housing gives light to and receives it from the diaphragm, rendering the optical microphone structure simple and compact. This dual-core collimator having a slowing varying beam profile facilitates the initial alignment of the optical head with the diaphragm, especially the distance between them. For the assembled microphone, the static characteristics were investigated tofind the operation point defined as the optimum distance between the head and the diaphragm, and a frequency response with a variation of about $\pm$5 dB for the range of up to 3kHz was achieved.

  • For high resolution electro-optical payload, the alignment and assembly of the secondary mirror with respect to the primary mirror is the most important step of the whole camera assembly process. For the purpose of the secondary mirror alignment, Wave front sensor and Collimator would rather be useful than the interferometer because of its small size and easiness of handling. In this paper the brief alignment procedure and method of the secondary mirror of a high resolution electro-optical camera system was introduced.

  • In single-photon-emission computed tomography (SPECT) with a pixelated semiconductor detector (PSD), not only pinhole collimators but also parallel-hole collimators are often used in preclinical nuclear-medicine imaging systems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare pinhole and parallel-hole collimators in a PSD. For that purpose, we paired a PID 350 (Ajat Oy Ltd., Finland) CdTe PSD with each of the four collimators most frequently used in preclinical nuclear medicine: (1) a pinhole collimator, and (2) low-energy high-resolution (LEHR), (3) low-energy general-purpose (LEGP), and (4) low-energy high-sensitivity (LEHS) parallel-hole collimators. The sensitivity and spatial resolution of each collimator was evaluated using a point source and a hot-rod phantom. The highest sensitivity was achieved using LEHS, followed by LEGP, LEHR, and pinhole. Also, at a source-to-collimator distance of 2 cm, the spatial resolution was 1.63, 2.05, 2.79, and 3.45 mm using pinhole, LEHR, LEGP, and LEHS, respectively. The reconstructed hot-rod phantom images showed that the pinhole collimator and the LEHR parallel-hole collimator give a fine spatial resolution for preclinical SPECT with PSD. In conclusion, we successfully compared different types of collimators for a preclinical pixelated semiconductor SPECT system.

  • The MATS (Mesosphere Airglow / Aerosol Tomography Spectroscopy) satellite is a Swedish scientific microsatellite which Kyung Hee University participates in developing. The limb telescope of the MATS satellite is designed with linear astigmatism-free off axis optical configuration which allows wide field of view ($5.67^{\circ}{\times}0.91^{\circ}$). Here we present the full-field optical performance test setup that consists of a point source, a collimator, the limb telescope and a CCD (Charged Coupled Device). The incidence angle of the collimator was carefully controlled by the rotary stage under the limb telescope. The imaging tests represent expected results without dominant aberrations.

  • In this paper, we propose the optical system design for a medium sized LED marine lanterns which simplifies the multi-layer structure into a single structure. In order to satisfy the target fixed intensity(35,000cd) and vertical divergence($-2.5^{\circ}{\sim}-4.0^{\circ}$, $+2.5^{\circ}{\sim}+4.0^{\circ}$), we use the total internal reflection collimator lens. And a Monte Carlo simulation has been utilized to optimize a condition of a LED package, TIR lens and outside lens. The computer simulation results indicated that this LED marine lanterns can produce of a fixed intensity(35,382cd) and vertical divergence($-3.1^{\circ}{\sim}+2.5^{\circ}$). Using the this optical system, we achieve the target value of LED lanterns.
