  • In this computational study of optical fiber manufacturing, WOW (wet-on-wet) double coating process on freshly drawn glass fiber has been numerical modelled and simulated using a simplified geometry of typical optical fiber coating apparatus. The numerical domain includes primary and secondary coating dies along with secondary coating cup and the interface between primary and secondary coating liquids are investigated using level set method. Coating liquid viscosity is an important parameter and its dependence on temperature is also considered. Since there would be possibility for pressure and temperature of primary coating liquid to be increased substantially at high fiber drawing speed, the effects of increased pressure and temperature of primary coating liquid are examined on flow patterns of coating liquids in secondary coating cup. In case that both pressure and temperature of primary coating liquid are high enough, liquid interface becomes noticeably unstable and this flow instability could adversely affect the uniform coatings and final quality of produced optical fiber.

  • Fiber coatings are essential in optical fiber manufacturing, since they provide the protective layers from the surface damages and the adequate fiber strength. Flow and temperature fields of coating liquid in a fiber coating applicator are numerically investigated by using a commercial CFD software. The main focus of this computational study is on the thermal effects by viscous dissipation and the effects of coating supply temperature on the final fiber coating thickness. The numerical results reveal that the thermal effects play a major role in the high-speed optical fiber coating process and give substantial influences on the determination of coating thickness. Changing the supply temperature of coating liquid is found to relieve the radial variation of coating liquid viscosity in the coating die and it can be an effective way to control the fiber coating thickness.

  • The protective double layer polymer coatings on silica optical fibers are realized by wet-on-wet liquid coating process and they play an important role in final quality of mass produced optical fibers. This numerical study aims to analyze the effects of secondary coating die design parameters by employing two dimensional axisymmetric model of coating cup and coating die geometry and computational fluid dynamics simulations which include temperature dependent viscosity of polymer coating liquids and viscous dissipation heating. Under high speed fiber drawing conditions and pressurized coating liquid supply, the effects of converging die angle are investigated in order to appreciate the change of coating liquid flow patterns such as flow recirculation zone near coating die as well as primary and secondary coating layer thicknesses. The auxiliary coating die to converging coating die is also tested and the results find that this concept is advantageous in achieving stable double layer coatings on silica glass fiber.

  • Purpose: In this paper, the reliability and reproductivity of anti-reflection (AR) coating on ophthalmic lens using optical monitoring system (OMS) were investigated. Methods: The random error simulation and RunSheet performance in Essential Macleod software to confirm possibility of AR coating using OMS were performed. The coating process of 19 batches was carried out in order to perform reproductivity test of AR coating after simulation process. Results: As a result, the coating results of 19 batches had shown the excellent reproductivity of about 0.5% error. Conclusions: We confirmed the excellent reproductivity and reliability of AR coating on ophthalmic lens using optical monitoring system from our results.

  • A numerical study is conducted on the optical fiber coating flow in a primary coating nozzle consisting of three major parts: a resin chamber, a contraction and a coating die of small diameter. The flow is driven by the optical fiber penetrating the center of the nozzle at a high speed. The axisymmetric two-dimensional flow and heat transfer induced by viscous heating are examined based on the laminar flow assumption. Numerical experiments are performed with varying the convergent angle of nozzle contraction and the optical fiber drawing speed. The numerical results show that for high drawing speed greater than 30 m/s, there is a transition in the essential flow features depending on the convergent angle. For a large convergent angle greater than $30^{\circ}$, unfavorable multicellular flow structures are monitored, which could be associated with wall boundary-layer separation. In the regime of small convergent angle, as the angle increases, the highest resin temperature at the exit of die and the coating thickness decrease but the sensitivity of coating thickness on drawing speed and the maximum shear strain of resin on the optical fiber increase. The effects of the convergent angle are discussed in view of compromise searching for an appropriate angle for high-speed optical fiber coating.

  • This research was intended to evaluate the effect of carboxymethylcellulose(CMC) on the coating structure and surface strength of coated paper prepared with amphoteric latex based coating color. Printability and optical properties of coated papers were compared. The influence of the consolidation behavior of coating color on the coating structure and the surface strength of coated paper was investigated. Compared with the conventional anionic latex, amphoteric latex formed bulkyer, smoother and more porous coating layer, which in turn, restricted binder migration in the coating layers, and facilitated immobilization of coating colors. However, dry pick strength of coated paper was decreased. The addition of CMC to these systems had strongly influenced on. the consolidation behavior and porosity in the dry state, through forming the network structure of coating layers by the interaction with amphoteric latex particles. Thus, printability and optical properties of coated papers were improved. Results indicated that amphoteric latex could be practically applied to the paper coating to improve printability and optical properties of coated papers.

  • A thin spray coating of inorganic black lithium polysilicate (IBLP) on black anodized AZ31B magnesium alloy was fabricated for better corrosion resistance and thermo-optical properties for thermal control of spacecraft components. The morphology of the specimens with and without IBLP-based spray coating was characterized by SEM-EDS techniques. Impedance and potentiodynamic measurements on the specimens revealed better corrosion resistance for the specimen with a thin coating of lithium polysilicate. This was primarily due to the presence of lithium polysilicate inside the micro-cracks of the black anodized specimen, restricting the diffusion paths for corrosive media. Environmental tests, namely, humidity, thermal cycling, thermo vacuum performance, were used to evaluate the space-worthiness of the coating. The thermo-optical properties of the coating were measured before and after each environmental test to ascertain its stability. The specimen with an IBLP-based spray coating showed enhanced thermo-optical properties, greater than ~0.90. Hence, the proposed coating demonstrated better handling, better corrosion resistance, and space-worthiness during the pre-launch phase owing to its improved thermo-optical properties.

  • The present investigation on optical fiber mass manufacturing features the computational modeling and simulation on a double layer liquid coating process on glass fiber surface. The computational model employs a simplified geometry of typical fiber coating system which consists of primary and secondary coating dies along with secondary coating cup. The viscous dissipation in coating flow is incorporated into the double layer coating process simulations. Heavy temperature dependence of coating liquid viscosity is also considered in the model. The computational results found that the effects of viscous dissipation on both primary and secondary coating layer thicknesses are highly significant at higher drawing speed. Several important coating process parameters such as supply temperature and pressure of primary and secondary coating liquids are investigated and discussed in order to appreciate how those parameters affect the double layer coating layer thickness on fast moving glass fiber.

  • A study was carried out to investigate such optical properties of coated papers as brightness, opacity and gloss affected by the coating pigment composition and coat weight using clay, ground calcium carbonate, precipitated calcium carbonate, and plastic pigment as pigments. The effects of drying methods and supercalendering on optical properties were also evaluated. Gloss increased abruptly while brightness and opacity decreased slightly by supercalendering due to surface smoothing and consolidating effects of the coating layers. Optical properties changed little by drying methods. Pigment composition showed significant influences on optical properties. Brightness of coated papers decreased or increased linearly as the coat weight was increased depending on the pigment composition, while opacity increased linearly for all formulations. Gloss increased abruptly at low coat weights for all formulations and approached a plateau value at coat weight of 15-20g/$m^2$. Third order polynomial regression equations relating the coat weight with gloss have been derived and tabulated.
