An optical switch composed of three-identical, equally-spaced $Ti:LinbO_3$ waveguides and overlaid Al electrodes of CPW structure was designed and fabricated. Patterned Ti was diffused into z-cut $LinbO_3$ substrates at $1025^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours to make a three-waveguide directional coupler. $SiO_2$ buffer layer of $1.2{\mu}m$ was grown by the PECVD to reduce the propagation loss of TM mode, and Al electrodes were built on the layer for switching the guided beam. For an incident beam of ${\lambda}=1.3{\mu}m$, almost perfect optical coupling between two outer waveguides was observed. When an electric field was applied to detune the three waveguides anti-symmetrically, the optical switching phenomenon was successfully confirmed.

The optical near-field patterns, propagation loss and mode sizes of x-cut $Ti:LiNbO_3$ optical waveguide which was fabricated by Ti-diffusion varying with Ti strip thickness in wet oxygen atmosphere were discussed at optical wavelength 1550nm. As Ti thickness increased from $760{\AA}$, the insertion loss of waveguide was decreased. But at Ti thickness $1500{\AA}$, mode sizes are widely broadened. The Ti thickness of below $1100{\AA}$ and above $1500{\AA}$ showed negative effects to propagation loss and fiber coupling. The best Ti thickness for fabricating low propagation loss and good fiber coupling was inferred to be between $1100{\AA}-1500{\AA}$ in our conditions. And for Ti thickness $1150{\AA}$, its propagation loss, horizontal/vertical mode sizes were showed 1.61 dB/cm, $11.9/8.9{\mu}m$ for TM, 0.22 dB/cm, $12.0/9.1{\mu}m$ for TE respectively.
A unique optical waveguide structure is proposed to enhance the optical characteristics of alcohol screening sensors. This structure is then simulated. The structure consists of two elliptical waveguides that have a common focus to one side and has an IR source and detector at each of the other focal points of the ellipses. When the angle between the two elliptical waveguides is increased from 30 degrees to 90 degrees, the maximum level of irradiance is greatly decreased, falling from $2.23{\times}10^6 W/m^2$ to $5.74{\times}10^5W/m^2$. However, the diameter of the incident rays is at a minimum of 1.86mm and the total incident flux is less than 10% lower when compared to the structure at $90^{\circ}$. It can be seen from the simulation results that this structure might enhance the sensitivity of an optical gas sensor which has a large absorption wavelength.
We have demonstrated a high-power widely tunable sampled grating distributed Bragg reflector (SGDBR) laser integrated monolithically with a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) having a lateral tapered waveguide, which is the first to emit a fiber-coupled output power of more than 10 dBm using a planar buried heterostructure (PBH). The output facet reflectivity of the integrated SOA using a lateral tapered waveguide and two-layer AR coating of $TiO_2\;and\;SiO_2$ was lower than $3\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;over$ a wide bandwidth of 85 nm. The spectra of 40 channels spaced by 50 GHz within the tuning range of 33 nm were obtained by a precise control of SG and phase control currents. A side-mode suppression ratio of more than 35 dB was obtained in the whole tuning range. Fiber-coupled output power of more than 11 dBm and an output power variation of less than 1 dB were obtained for the whole tuning range.
Ray-optics approach based on the rigorous coupled wave theory, called by the rigorous ray-optics method (RROM), is developed for the calculation of couling coefficients of waveguide grating devices. The coupling coefficients of several grating structures, such as rectangular, sinusoidal, triangle, and trapezoidal shapes, are determined by the RROM, and they are compared with those obtained by conventional methods of the ray-optics method (ROM) and the coupled mode method (CMM). In the case of rectangular gratings, the coupling coefficients is evaluated in detail by various depths and duty-cycles of the grating. We have found that the RROM gives more exact solutions for the coupling coefficients of even arbitrary shapes of diffractive waveguide grating devices than the other conventional methods.
We find the vectorial solution of the optical waveguide with semicircular cross-section by expanding the electromagnetic fields of the waveguide into the series of trigonometric and Bessel funtions and by applying the boundary conditions at the finitely selected points on the interface of the core and the cladding. We find also the propagation constants and the energy distributions of the eigenmodes and discuss its properties. As a result of computation, we find that the electromagnetic fields of the even modes about the symmetric axis of the semircular shape are nearly the same as those of the odd modes except that E and H of the odd modes are replaced by -H and E and that the even and odd modes are degenerated as the ratio of refractive index of the core and cladding approaches to 1.
Silver ion-exchanged glass waveguide with its large surface index difference and shallow depth is suitable to be used for the hybrid integration of semiconductor device and glass waveguide using the semiconductor film grafting technique. We report characteristics of the planar and channel glass waveguides exchanged in the diluted silver nitrate melt in the visible and infrared spectral region. Especially, we determined the fabrication parameters for single-mode channel waveguide at 1.5.$\mu$m, an important wavelength in the optical communication. Directional couplers with several different configurations were fabricated, and their 3 dB coupling length was determined as a function of wavelenGh and polarization.

In this paper we propose and theoretically analyze a monolithic multiparametric sensor consisting of a superstructure of surface-relief waveguide Bragg gratings (WBGs), a micro-machined diaphragm, and a cantilever beam. Diaphragms of two different configurations, namely circular and square, are designed and analyzed separately for pressure measurement. The square diaphragm is then selected for further study, since it shows relatively higher sensitivity compared to the circular one, as it incurs more induced stress when any pressure is applied. The cantilever beam with a proof mass is designed to enhance the sensitivity for acceleration measurement. A unique mathematical method using coupled-mode theory and the transfer-matrix method is developed to design and analyze the shift in the Bragg wavelength of the superstructure configuration of the gratings, due to simultaneously applied pressure and acceleration. The effect of temperature on the wavelength shift is compensated by introducing another Bragg grating in the superstructure configuration. The measured sensitivities for pressure and acceleration are found to be 0.21 pm/Pa and 6.49 nm/g respectively.
Luminescent solar concentrator (LSC), consisting of luminophore included glass or substrate with edge-mounted photovoltaic cell, is semi-transparent, energy harvesting devices. The luminophore absorbs incident solar light and re-emit photons, while the waveguide plate allows re-emitted photons to reach edge or bottom mounted photovoltaic cells with reduced losses. If the area of LSC is much larger than that of photovoltaic cell, this system can effectively concentrate solar light. In order to improve the performance of LSC, new materials and optical structures have been suggested by many research groups. For decreasing re-abosprion losses, it is essential to minimize the overlap between absorption and photoluminescence solar spectrum of luminophoroe. Moreover, the combination of selective top reflector and reflective optical cavity structure significantly boosts the waveguide efficiency in the LSC. As a result of many efforts, commercially available LSCs have been demonstrated and verified in the outdoor. Also, it is expected to generate electricity in buildings by replacing conventional glass to LSCs.
