  • Optical telecommunication has been growing at a rate that exceeds even the "Moore′s Law". However, while the electronic revolution has allowed everyone to have his/her own PC, the optical revolution is still confined to the long-haul network such that the individual end users are still connected to an electronic metro/access networks. However, given the rapid increase in the data traffic (e.g., multimedia), the optical edge that separates the individual end users from optical networks will eventually have to include the metro/acces networks.   • For photosensitive and micro-structuring in $Li_2O-A1_2O_3-SiO_2$glasses by laser treatment, Nd:YAG laser in 355 nm and 1064 nm wavelength was irradiated to the glass to investigate fracture characterization and optical changes. The fractured glass surfaces irradiated by 1064 nm laser was observed by Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and optical microscope, and optical changes caused by 355 nm later was identified from absorption spectra. In this study, it could be expected that the laser treatment technology will be utilized for 3-dimensional micro-structure, internal waveguide, optical memory by optical absorption changes in glass matrix.

  • There have been many investigations and researches on PLC type of optical amplifiers because they are convenient for mass production and also can integrate multi-functional devices into a single chip. In this research. the fabrication of optical waveguide made of Si/$Sio_2$ by FHD(Flame Hydrolysis Deposition) for passive integrated optical devices and $1.5\mu\textrm{m}$ optical amplifier by Solution Doping method, which is one of the method doping $Er^{3+}$ into the thin film, are mainly discussed.

  • The OPM(optical performance monitoring module) is needed in order to monitor optical performance. the most importance of OPM is to measure the wavelength of optical signal. In the past time, it was very difficult to get the wavelength value because they used pilot tone. Since then, using AWG(arrayed waveguide grating) and AOTF(acousto optic tuneable filter), the wavelength and the transmission qualify for multi channel signal have been monitored. In this paper, we chose the fiber fabry-perot wavelength variable filter which be evaluated for optical resolution ability to excellent, so that FBG(fiber bragg grating) was used for setting reference wavelength because chose a wavelength variable filter.

  • A traveling-wave CPW(coplanar waveguide) electrode with abruptly broken input/output-taper for LiNbO$_3$optical modulator was designed and fabricated. The electrical characteristics of traveling-wave electrode on z-cut LiNbO$_3$crystal with SiO$_2$buffer layers were measured by network analyzer. To confirm the possibility of the electro-optic modulator electrode, detailed calculations of the impedance, microwave effective index and attenuation constants are presented as a function of the microwave electrode thickness, but the buffer layer thickness is fixed as 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. These characteristics are discussed from the viewpoint of the device optimization and are expected to be design guides for the LiNbO$_3$modulator’s electrodes.

  • In this paper, we report characteristics of a internal chip of LiNbO$_3$ modulator with low-driving-voltage at 150nm wavelength. A Ti diffusion method for LiNbO$_3$ optical waveguide and a buffer layer for improving phase velocity mismatch between optical and microwave waves were employed. The traveling-wave coplanar waveguide electrode of 35mm is used for reducing the driving voltage. From this work, wideband modulation of 10㎓ and low-driving voltage of 3.9volts are realized.

  • A waveguide of coupled optical modulator was fabricated on LiNbO$_3$ based on proton exchange with self-aligned thin film electrode method. The electrode pattern was designed using a self-aligned method. After proton exchange process, the waveguide was prepared by annealing process. The initial crossover state of the fabricated 2$\times$2 coupled optical modulator was observed with controlling the annealing process variables and the structure of self-aligned thin film electrodes. It was shown form the present work that the measured crosstalk is -29.5[dB] and 8.0[V] of detected modulating voltage.

  • Terahertz (THz) generation by a GaP ridge waveguide with a collinear modal phase-matching scheme based on cascaded difference frequency generation (DFG) processes is theoretically analyzed. The cascaded Stokes interaction processes and the cascaded anti-Stokes interaction processes are investigated from coupled wave equations. THz intensities and quantum conversion efficiency are calculated. Compared with non-cascaded DFG processes, THz intensities from 11-order cascaded DFG processes are increased to 5.48. The quantum conversion efficiency of 177.9% in cascaded processes can be realized, exceeding the Manley-Rowe limit.

  • Planar optical waveguides are fabricated on a Y-cut LiNbO3 single crystal substrate by Ti indiffusion method. From data measured by the bright M-line spectroscopy, refractive index profiles are reconstructed by WKB approximation method. Then, single strip, X-crossing strip, and Y-brinch strip optical waveguides are fabricated on X-cut LiNbO3 single crystal substrate, with waveguide patterns made by the laser beam direct writing method. And their near-field intensity profiles are observed after coupling the light to the waveguide edges.
