  • In this paper, an optical modulator based on monolayer graphene and triple-layer black phosphorus (BP) heterojunction in the optical communication band range is designed. The influences of geometric parameters, chemical potential, BP orientation and dispersion on the fundamental mode of this modulator were determined in detail by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. Using appropriate geometric parameter settings, the extinction ratio of this proposed modulator is 0.166 dB, while the modulator with a working length of 3 ㎛ can realize a 0.498 dB modulation depth. The 3-dB bandwidth of this modulator could achieve up to 2.65 GHz with 27.23 fJ/bit energy consumption. The extinction ratio and bandwidth of the proposed modulator increased by 66% and 120.83%, respectively, compared to the monolayer graphene-based ridge-type waveguide modulator. Energy consumption was reduced by 97.28%, compared to a double-layer graphene-based modulator.

  • We present an efficient design approach for a plasmonic slot waveguide using a genetic algorithm. The analyzed structure consists of a nanometric slot in a thin metallic film embedded within a dielectric. To achieve high confinement without long propagation length, the thickness and width of the slot are optimally designed in order to optimize the figures of merit including mode confinement and propagation length. The optimized design is based on the finite element method and enhances the guiding and focusing of light power propagation.

  • We demonstrate a polarization insensitive waveguide filter using quantum well intermixing(QWI). The bandgap of epitaxial layer is modified from 1.55${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ to 1.40${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ using QWI and a Bragg grating filter is demonstrated using electron beam lithography technology. The fabricated waveguide filter has a 70% reflection efficiency and a 1.46nm filter bandwidth. Furthermore polarization insensitive transmission characteristics are observed. The device can be applied to photonic integrated circuits(PIC).

  • We have proposed a novel planar lightwave circuit (PLC) optical sensor to monitor the contamination in a flow-cell where water is continuously supplied through a water quality measurement system. We designed a PLC chip with a V-shape waveguide and the simulated its function as a sensor for monitoring contamination in a flow-cell using a numerical the FDTD (finite-difference time-domain) analysis. A novel cross type of waveguide was introduced to make the PLC chip of the V-shaped waveguide. The fabricated PLC was cut into the cross waveguide. A change in the optical propagation loss of the PLC sensor was observed after immersing the PLC sensor into city water. It was determined that the propagation loss of the PLC sensor was 3 dB at a wavelength of $1.55{\mu}m$ in the city water for 15 days.

  • Optical waveguide was fabricated in the soda lime glass substrate using rapid thermal method. A chirped grating having period variation of 0.41 - 0.51${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ on this waveguide for WDM was made. And then, arranging input and output optical fiber, wavelength division multiplexer with 5 channels in short wavelength region was realized. Experiment result of this WDM showed that wavelength spacing, 3 dB bandwidth, insertion loss and crosstalk were 5nm, 4nm, 40dB and less than -10dB, respectively.

  • Multimode channel waveguides were fabricated using a direct UV patterning technology from thick films deposited by the one-step dip-coating of an organic/inorganic hybrid material (ORMOCER(equation omitted). The core size of the covered ridge waveguide was 43${\times}$51 $\mu\textrm{m}$$^2$; the waveguides can be readily prepared for multimode applications by direct UV patterning. The waveguides exhibited smooth surface profiles and a low optical loss of 0.07 ㏈/cm at the most important wavelength (850nm) used for optical interconnects.

  • A low loss x-cut $LiNbO_3$optical waveguide was fabricated by Yi in-diffusion, and the properties of guided-mode and the total insertion loss of the pigtailed waveguide with polarization maintaining fiber(PMF) were measured at optical wavelength 1550nm. for forming the waveguides, the parameters of diffusion, Ti thickness, waveguide line-width, length, diffusion temperature, time and atmosphere were set $1400{\AA}$, $8{\mu}m$, 3.3cm, $1050^{\circ}C$, 8 hours and wet bubbled oxygen, respectively. And then after the polishing and piatailing, it showed that the total insertion loss was -4.1dB for TM mode, -5.5dB for TE mode, and mode size, that is, the horizontal/ vertical size were $13.8{\mu}m/18{\mu}m$ for TM mode, $9.6{\mu}m/6.5{\mu}m$ for TE mode.

  • This paper demonstrates a comparison of linear and nonlinear analyses for thermo-optic effects of optical temperature sensor based on the etched silica-based planar waveguide Bragg grating. Topics include theoretical analyses and experiment of the etched planar waveguide Bragg grating optical temperature sensor. Theoretical models with nonlinear than linear temperature effect for the grating response based on waveguide and plate deformation theories agree with experiments to within acceptable tolerance.

  • After the successful extension of the rotating planar waveguide model to Wave Optics, where a clear identification between the angular velocity of one hypothetical waveguide and the phase differences between two points on the path of one bounded mode was found, an application of the model to explain the interference theory is presented. We demonstrate that, for two bounded modes to create an interference pattern, a constrain to the relative parameters among both is imposed by the fiber optics. This result, not reported in the literature up to date, provides a new horizon to understand the interaction light-light when propagated within optical fibers.
