Optimization of 40 Gb/s WDM Systems Using Super-Gaussian RZ Pulses

  • 40 Gbps WDM Systems using super-Gaussian RZ pulses have been studied by numerical simulation to optimize their performance. The assumption of standard single mode fiber is valid when existing WDM systems are required to upgrade their performance to 40Gbps. It is shown that the standard single mode fiber can transmit optical signals over 720 km (Q > 10) by optimizing optical and electrical filter characteristics at the receiver and by compensation of dispersion. However, it is also shown that ${\pm}0.3%$ dispersion compensation tolerance per span (80 km) could prohibit transmitting over 320km (Q > 10). In addition, a duty cycle of less than 0.4 degrades system performance significantly.

  • Inception and propagation of electrical tree and properties of partial discharge(PD) pulses accompanying with tree in low density polyethylene were discussed. We observed the characteristics of process of electrical tree by using optical microscope and investigated the statistical characteristics of the PD pulses by analyzing PD quantities and distribution patterns. The PD pulses were analyzed by q-n, $\phi$-n and $\phi$-q distribution. The statistical operators used were skewness(s), kurtosis(k) and average phase angle. The skewness and average discharge phase angle of PD pulses increased as the Propagation of tree. The kurtosis was about 1.8 at the Inception of tree, but It increased as the propagation of tree.

Three-Temperature Modeling of Carrier-Phonon Interactions in Thin GaAs Film Structures Irradiated by Picosecond Pulse Lasers

  • This article investigates numerically the carrier-phonon interactions in thin gallium arsenide (GaAs) film structures irradiated by subpicosecond laser pulses to figure out the role of several recombination processes on the energy transport during laser pulses and to examine the effects of laser fluences and pulses on non-equilibrium energy transfer characteristics in thin film structures. The self-consistent hydrodynamic equations derived from the Boltzmann transport equations are established for carriers and two different types of phonons, i.e., acoustic phonons and longitudinal optical (LO) phonons. From the results, it is found that the two-peak structure of carrier temperatures depends mainly on the pulse durations, laser fluences, and nonradiative recombination processes, two different phonons are in nonequilibrium state within such lagging times, and this lagging effect can be neglected for longer pulses. Finally, at the initial stage of laser irradiation, SRH recombination rates increases sufficiently because the abrupt increase in carrier number density no longer permits Auger recombination to be activated. For thin GaAs film structures, it is thus seen that Auger recombination is negligible even at high temperature during laser irradiation.

  • 지속시간이 펨토초 수준에 이르는 빛펄스의 전기장 및 위상의 시간적 변화를 잴 수 있는 "이차조화파 발생 프로그(SHG FROG: Second Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating)" 장치 및 소프트웨어를 개발하고 성능을 확인하였다. 이 장치를 써서 잰 실험값으로부터 빛펄스를 복원하는데는 "주요성분 일반 투영(PCGP: Principal Component Generalized Projection)" 방식에 더하여 프로그 궤적의 주파수 및 시간지연 "한계값(marginal)"과 이차조화파의 분광분포에 대한 조건을 덧붙임으로써 복원과정의 안정성과 수렴속도를 개선하였다.
