The coupling properties of supermodes guided by grating-assisted directional couplers (GADCs) can be phrased in rigorous modal theory. Such a modal solution for TE modes expressed by simple electrical transmission-line networks is utilized to analyze the power distribution of GADCS with three guiding channels. In particular, the modal transmission-line theory can serve as a template for computational algorithms that systematically evaluate the coupling efficiency that are not readily obtained by other methods.

Guide modes in a graded index multinmode optical fiber are turned into clad modes when the optical fiber was bended into a perpendicular direction to its optical axes by microbending forces, which causes the loss of the guiding optical power. The theories reported on this microbending power loss can be applied to calculation of the transmission power loss only when the beding period equals to the mode coupling length. In this paper, we obtained the general expression of the optical power transmission loss in a graded index multimode fiber bended periodically. This can be applied to the calculation of the power loss of the periodically microbended fiber with an arbitrary bending shape and period. Also, by using the beam theory in mechanics, we could derive the expression of the displacement of the optical fiber caused by the external force which bends the fiber into a periodic trapezoidal shape. Experiments were carried out to determine the dependence of the power loss on the period of the microbending forces. Experimnetal results were in good agreement (in the same order of the magnitude) with theoritical values derived in our work within the bending period region of 2mm-10mm.

The current wireless power charge technologies are based on induction coupling, magnetic resonant coupling, electromagnetic wave, etc. However, the current wireless power charge technologies has several disadvantages including short transfer range, electromagnetic interference, etc. In this paper, we investigate and demonstrate a laser wireless power charge technology. A laser source is used in the transmitter to convert from electric power to optical power and a solar cell or a photodiode is used in the receiver to convert from optical power to electric power. The laser wireless power charge technology may be the most efficient wireless power charge technology in the long distance over than 10 meters. Our experimental results show a transfer efficiency of 2.15% at the 70-m long distance with a 100 mW laser transmitter and a photodiode receiver.
A MOSFET's gate driver based on magnetic coupling is investigated. The gate driver can meet the demands in applications for wide range of duty cycles and high frequency. Fully galvanic isolation can be realized, and no auxiliary supply is needed. The driver is insensitive to the leakage inductor of the isolated transformer. No gate resistor is needed to damp the oscillation, and thus the peak output current of the gate driver can be improved. Design of the driving transformer can also be made more flexible, which helps to improve the isolation voltage between the power stage and the control electronics, and aids to enhance the electromagnetic compatibility. The driver's operation principle is analyzed, and the design method for its key parameters is presented. The performance analysis is validated via experiment. The disadvantages of the traditional magnetic coupling and optical coupling have been conquered through the investigated circuit.

An analysis and numerical computations relating to the coupling of optical modes between two neighboring waveguides are discussed. The waveguides are fabricated with Lithium Niobate as guide 1 and Vanadium Oxide as guide 2. In a wave guide system that incorporates two lossless guides, a complete transfer of power from one guide to another can occur when the waveguides are (1) identical or (2) the modes in each guide have identical phase constants. Here we discuss the coupling effects when the guides are dissimilar with respect to both geometry and losses. In thers results, we show that power transfer can occur between the two guides, one lossy and the other lossless, provided the phase matched condition is satisfied. When properly coupled, the power attenuation varies according to the amount of coupling.

A optical switch which on the LiNbO$_3$substrate is fabricated by using proton exchange method and self-alignet method. The annealing at 400[$^{\circ}C$] was carried out to control waveguide width and depth. A self-aligned method, which doesn\`t need the additional mask precesses, was applied to simplify the fabrication processes and to maximize efficiency of electric field application. The depths of the two annealed optical waveguides, which were measured by using ${\alpha}$-step, ware 1.435[K${\AA}$] and 1,380[K${\AA}$]. Using ${\alpha}$-step facility, we examined that the width of waveguides is increased from 5[$\mu\textrm{m}$] to 6.45[$\mu\textrm{m}$] and 6.3[$\mu\textrm{m}$] due to the annealing effects. The process of proton exchange was done at 400[$^{\circ}C$] for 60[min] and annealing process was done at 400[$^{\circ}C$] for 60[min]. The high speed optical modulator has very good figures of merits: the measured voltage of the input waveguide power is 3.5[V], the voltage of the coupling waveguide power is 3.9[mV], and -29.5[dB] crosstalk and 8[V] switching voltage were achieved.
Fiber-optic comb filters using a side-polished fiber coupler are proposed as multi-channel isolation filters on wavelength division multiplexing systems. We have demonstrated that the coupling efficiency between two waveguides is improved by the intermediate coupling layer in spite of the decrease of the optical power transfer between two waveguides due to the high-order modes of the overlay waveguide coupled with the side-polished single-mode fiber. When LiNbO$_3$with a 200-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thickness was applied as a planar-overlay-waveguide, the comb filtering characteristics with a 4 nm-channel-spacing were achieved and the maximum power coupling occurred at the 1-${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$-thickness and the refractive index in range 1.52 to 1.53 of an intermediate coupling layer. If the intermediate coupling layer is optimized, an extinction ratio with more than 20 dB can be obtained. These experimental results are in good agreement with the BPM simulation.
Semiconductor optical switch modules of 1$\times$2, 1$\times$4, and 4$\times$4 types for 1550 nm optical communication systems were fabricated by using laser welding technique, embodying in 30-pin butterfly package. For better coupling efficiency between switch chip and optical fiber, tapered fibers of 10~15mm lens radii were used, which provided up to 60% optical coupling efficiency. With the help of new laser hammering process, we could recover the lost optical power almost completely up to average 82% of initially obtained power. The fabricated optical switch modules showed good thermal stability of less than 5% degradation even after 200 times thermal cycling test. The 2.5 Gbps optical transmission characteristics of the 4$\times$4 switch module showed low sensitivities of less than -30dB for all possible switching paths. The transmission penalties of 1$\times$2 switch module at $10^{-10}$ BER were 0.6dB and 0.7dB for 50Xm and 90 Km optical fibers, respectively.

Efficient power transmission from a single mode fiber to a thin-film waveguide devices is one of the most fundamental and inevitable subject that should be first solved toward the realization of the integrated optic system. In this paper, fiber-waveguide coupling structure is considered and the large mismatch of field profiles at the fiber-waveguide interface is well avoided by using to the coupling guide which is intentionally developed on the top of the thin-film guuide. From the simulation, the taper-type structure are shown to be easier realizeable than the uniform one, since optical coupling between the guides in the latter has a stronger tolerance to the deviation of waveguide parameters.
A theoretical presentation of evanescent coupling is offered with respect to the refractive indexes between a side-polished optical fiber and an infinitely planar waveguide with a conductor cladding (PWGCC). The PWG is suspended at a constant distance from an unclad fiber core and attached with the perfect conductor (PEC) on one side. The behavior of the distributed couple. is examined using a coupled mode model, which takes account of the two dimensions of the waveguide configuration. The coupling and propagation of light were found to depend on both the relationship between the refractive index values of each structure and the configuration of the side-polished fiber used in the PWGCC. The spreading of light in the unconfined direction of the PWGCC is described in terms of a simple geometrical interpretation of the synchronization condition that is in agreement with a previous investigation of the problem based on the coupled-mode theory (CMT). The power of the light propagation in the fiber decreased exponentially along the fiber axis as it was transferred to the PWGCC, where it was carried away.
