  • In this study, radiation sensor tips are fabricated for remote sensing of X or gamma ray with inorganic scintillators and plastic optical fiber. The visible range of light from the inorganic scintillator that is generated by radiation source is guided by the plastic optical fiber and is measured by optical detector and power-meter. Two kinds of sensor tips are designed and fabricated such as film type and powder type. Many kinds of inorganic scintillators are used to fabricate both sensor tips, and the different wavelength of emitting lights from them are measured to determine the optimal inorganic scintillator which has maximum light output. As a radiation source X-ray generator and Ir-192 are selected to test a performance of sensor tip. It is expected that the fiber-optic radiation sensor is widely used in nuclear industry and medical applications due to its special characteristics such as good flexibility, easy in processing, long lengths and no interference to electro magnetic field.

  • In this study, a novel gas sensor based on evanescent field coupling between single mode side polished fiber and solvatochromic dye dispersed polymer waveguide was demonstrated. We fabricated a side polished optical fiber device as a volatile organic compounds gas detector. Solvatochromic dye was coated on the top of the side polished optical fiber to take advantage of evanescent field coupling. The solvatochromism can be defined as the phenomenon whereby a compound changes color, either by a change in the absorption or emission spectra of molecule, when reacted in different VOCs. The device reacted to polarity gases like a hexane, butane, xylene etc. The resonance wavelength was shifted by the xylene concentration which range was 0.1 ppm ~ 100 ppm. Also, the response with the concentration was lineer and the detection limit was 0.1 ppb.

  • This article describes the development of a fiber optic accelerometer based on Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBG). The accelerometer utilizes the stiffness of the optical fiber and a lumped mass in the design. Acceleration is measured by the FBG in response to the vibration of the fiber optic mass system. The wavelength shift of FBG is proportional to the change in acceleration, and the gauge factor pertains to the shift in wavelength as a function of acceleration. Low frequency version of the accelerometer was developed for applications in monitoring bridges. The accelerometer was first evaluated in laboratory settings and then employed in a demonstration project for condition assessment of a bridge. Laboratory experiments involved evaluation of the sensitivity and resolution of measurements under a series of low frequency low amplitude conditions. The main feature of this accelerometer is single channel multiplexing capability rendering the system highly practical for application in condition assessment of bridges. This feature of the accelerometer was evaluated by using the system during ambient vibration tests of a bridge. The Frequency Domain Decomposition method was employed to identify the mode shapes and natural frequencies of the bridge. Results were compared with the data acquired from the conventional accelerometers.

  • An intensity-based optical fiber vibration sensor is applied to monitor the structural vibration and detect impact locations on a plate. Optical fiber vibration sensor is constructed by placing two cleaved fiber end, one of which is cantilevered in a hollow glass tube. The movement of the cantilevered section lags behind the rest of the sensor in response to an applied vibration and the amount of light coupled between the two fibers is thereby modulated. For vibration sensing, optical fiber vibration sensor is mounted on the carbon fiber composite beam and its response is investigated to free and forced vibration. In impact location detection, four optical fiber vibration sensors whose location is predetermined are placed at chosen positions and the different arrival times of impact-generated vibration signal are recorded by an FFT analyzer. Impact location can be calculated from these time delays. Experimental results show that optical fiber vibration sensor signals coincide with gap sensor in vibration sensing. The precise location of impact can be detected on an acrylate plate.

  • We propose a fiber grating sensor system for condition monitoring of large scale wind turbine blades. For the feasibility test of the proposed sensor system, a down-scaled wind turbine has been constructed and experimented. Fiber grating sensors were attached on a blade surface for distributed strain and temperature measurements. An optical rotary joint was used to transmit optical signals between the FBG sensor array and the signal processing unit. Instead of broadband light source, we used a wavelength-swept fiber laser to obtain high output power density. A spectrometer demodulation is used to alleviate the nonlinear wavelength tuning problem of the laser source. With the proposed sensor system we could measure dynamic strain and temperature profiles at multi-positions of rotating wind turbine blades.

  • Low reflectance optical fiber mirrors in the continuous length of the single mode fiber were fabricated using mechanical splices and pieces of fiber coated with $TiO_{2}$ dielectric film at the cleaved end. When fiber mirrors of refelctance of about 1% were produced, the insertion loss ranged from 0.055dB to 0.3dB and the average insertion loss was 0.15 dB. These mirrors could be produced easy in the field.

  • Thermally expanded core fiber (TEC-fiber) Bragg gratings have been fabricated and their transmission spectrums have been analyzed. The measured spectrum shows the characteristic peak splitting caused by the grating pair formed over the expanded section that has the effective index axial distribution, which could be employed for high resolution fiber sensors. An analysis on the spectrum can also give useful informations on the effective index profile of the TEC-fiber.

  • In order to extend the life time of building and civil infra-structure, nowadays, patch type fibrous composite materials are widely used. Retrofitted concrete columns and beams gain the stiffness and strength, but they lose toughness and show brittle failure. Usually, the cracks of concrete structures are visible with naked eyes and the status of the structure in the life cycle is estimated with visible inspection. After retrofitting of the structure, crack visibility is blocked by retrofitted composite materials. Therefore, structural monitoring after retrofitting is indispensible and self diagnosis method with optical fiber sensor is very useful. In this paper, We try to detect peel out effect and find the strain difference between main structure and retrofitting patch material when they separate each other.

  • The optical fiber refractive index sensors were fabricated using etching method and their refractive index characteristics have been investigated. Good sensitivity was shown at the region of 1.452-1.46 refractive index and operating point was shifted by wavelength. The sensitivity of sensor increased with decreasing cladding thickness and was stable with heat treatment. The hysteresis under cyclic refractive index changes was negligible.
