The combined technique of holographic interferometry and speckle photography, so called holospeckle interferometry, has been attention for the measurement of 3-D displacements. This new technique enables the researcher to obtain information of in plane and out-of plane displacements from one photographic plate. There is room for further development of special optical arrangement in order to apply holospeckle interferometry in specific field. In this study, the enlarged fringe pattern was obtained by specifical optical arrangement.
Confocal scanning microscopy (CSM) has been reported as an excellent method using the optical probe in scanning probe microscopy (SPM). Transmission or reflection confocal scanning microscopy (TCSM, RCSM) has been used in the three-dimensional reconstruction of specimen or the non-destructive measurement in vivo. The axial movement of the primary focal point having the information of specimen gives a good measurement performance with the great sensitivity. Application of the confocal theory and astigmatism to displacement measurement sensor uses the aperture as the pinhole or slit after collecting lens relating to confocal response in non-contact measurement; and astigmatic lens using four-segments detector as short-range sensor, long-range one combining the grating and rotary one hating the rotary directional grating. The aperture type can play an ...

Recently, a laser displacement sensor is widely used for the manufacturing automation. The sensor is generally composed of a diode laser and a light receiving device. The diode laser emits a laser beam and the receiving device detects the light reflected from the measured object. The object position is obtained based upon triangulation method. As a light receiving device, a PSD is usually utilized since its structure is very simple and rugged and has a high accuracy. Although the theoretical relationship for this sensor had been developed, the characteristics of the sensor have not been much experimentally studied. In this paper, several experimental results will presented. The measurement accuracy is affected by the surface conditions such as the reflectance characteristics, the angle of the object's surface and the laser intensity. In addition, it is found that the PSD and the signal processing circuit have nonlinearities and showed that those nonlinearities can be reduced by controlling the emitting laser intensity.

This paper proposes a method for measurement three-dimensional trajectories of bubbles generated around a swimmer's arms from stereo high-speed camera videos. This method is based on two techniques: two-dimensional trajectory estimation in single-camera images and trajectory pair matching in stereo-camera images. The two-dimensional trajectory is estimated by block matching using similarity of bubble shape and probability of bubble displacement. The trajectory matching is achieved by a consistensy test using epipolar constraint in multiple frames. The experimental results in two-dimensional trajectory estimation showed the estimation accuracy of 47% solely by the general optical flow estimation, whereas 71% taking the bubble displacement into consideration. This concludes bubble displacement is an efficient aspect in this estimation. In three-dimensional trajectory estimation, bubbles were visually captured moving along the flow generated by an arm; which means an efficient material for swimmers to swim faster.

Recently, the mechanical structures applied to many industrial products, especially in electronic products, appear to be miniaturized and complicated. This trend makes it difficult to analyze the stress distribution of those mechanical structures and generates new challenges for precise measurement of strain. In order to solve this measurement problem many optical measurement techniques have been suggested. Among those, the ESPI(Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry) has been considered as one of the most useful tools. But the shortage of recognition and difficulties of measurement have limited its industrial applications in spite of its excellent capabilities. Therefore in this study, not only the verification of the FEA result but the enhancement of industrial application of ESPI was tried by measuring the in-plane displacement of mechanical structure with ESPI, which is difficult to be measured with strain gauge.

In this study, we developed a counting method for non-contact ID cards using an optical fiber displacement sensor instead of the traditionally used friction counting method. The proposed method has the advantage of high speed and automated measurement. For counting non-contact ID cards, an H-type optical fiber sensor, jig part, and counting program are developed separately to build the system and adjust it. Through the experimental test results, it was confirmed that counting is possible with one type of international ID card and one type of financial security card based on ISO7810. Furthermore, by applying the proposed method to 100 ID cards 100 times repeatedly, it was confirmed that it has high accuracy and an error ratio of 0%. We experimentally demonstrated that the proposed counting method for non-contact ID cards using an optical fiber displacement sensor can perform measurements with high accuracy and high speed.

This paper presents a piezoelectric shunt methodology to reduce unwanted vibration of optical disk drive(O.D.D.). After briefly investigating a second-order mechanical vibration absorber model, the O.D.D. structure is incorporated with the piezoelectric shunt circuit. In order to evaluate feasibility of multi-mode passive damping of the structure, admittance measurement of piezoceramic is undertaken. The parameters are optimally tuned by admittance measurement results on the basis of the circuit model and displacement transmissibility is evaluated. To verify validity of admittance measurement result, experiment is performed and vibration reduction is achieved at two different modes.
Railway tracks are the direct supporting structures of the trains, which are vulnerable to produce large deformation under the temperature stress or subgrade settlement. The health status of track is critical, and the track should be routinely monitored to improve safety, lower the risk of excess deformation and provide reliable maintenance strategy. In this paper, the distributed optical fiber sensor was proposed to monitor the continuous deformation of the track. In order to validate the feasibility of the monitoring method, two deformation monitoring tests on one steel rail model in laboratory and on one real railway tack in outdoor were conducted respectively. In the model test, the working conditions of simply supported beam and continuous beam in the rail model under several concentrated loads were set to simulate different stress conditions of the real rail, respectively. In order to evaluate the monitoring accuracy, one distributed optical fiber sensor and one fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor were installed on the lower surface of the rail model, the strain measured by FBG sensor and the strain calculated from FEA were taken as measurement references. The model test results show that the strain measured by distributed optical fiber sensor has a good agreement with those measured by FBG sensor and FEA. In the outdoor test, the real track suffered from displacement and temperature loads. The distributed optical fiber sensor installed on the rail can monitor the corresponding strain and temperature with a good accuracy.

Optical Triangulation Probes (OTPs) are widely used for their simple structure. high resolution, and long operating range. However, errors originating from speckle, inclination of the object, source power fluctuation, ambient light, and noise of the detector limit their usability. In this paper, we propose new design criteria for an error-reduced OTP. The light source module for the system consists of an incoherent light source and a multimode optical fiber for eliminating speckle and shaping a Gaussian beam Intensity profile. A diffuse-reflective white copy paper, which is attached to the object, makes the light intensity distribution on the change-coupled device(CCD). Since the peak positions of the intensity distribution are not related to the various error sources, a sub-pixel resolution signal processing algorithm that can detect the peak position makes it possible to construct an error-reduced OTP system
