  • This paper presents a new moving obstacle detection method using an optical flow in mobile robot with an omnidirectional camera. Because an omnidirectional camera consists of a nonlinear mirror and CCD camera, the optical flow pattern in omnidirectional image is different from the pattern in perspective camera. The geometry characteristic of an omnidirectional camera has influence on the optical flow in omnidirectional image. When a mobile robot with an omnidirectional camera moves, the optical flow is not only theoretically calculated in omnidirectional image, but also investigated in omnidirectional and panoramic images. In this paper, the panoramic image is generalized from an omnidirectional image using the geometry of an omnidirectional camera. In particular, Focus of expansion (FOE) and focus of contraction (FOC) vectors are defined from the estimated optical flow in omnidirectional and panoramic images. FOE and FOC vectors are used as reference vectors for the relative evaluation of optical flow. The moving obstacle is turned out through the relative evaluation of optical flows. The proposed algorithm is tested in four motions of a mobile robot including straight forward, left turn, right turn and rotation. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown by the experimental results.

  • Recently, many researches have been done to improve optical performance of LCD-BLU(Back Light Unit). One of the most important parts in LCD-BLU is LGP(Light Guiding Plate). Micro-patterned LGP is known to have different optical characteristics depending on their shape, pattern density and size, etc. In the present study, a micro-optical patterned LGP mold was fabricated using LiGA process. The difference in the optical characteristics between positive and negative patterned LGP's was investigated by fixing the density, location and size of each pattern. It was found that the negative patterned LGP showed better optical characteristics than positive one.

  • Smart gels have recently associated with photonic crystals to form photonic gels. Since these photonic gels are capable of reversibly converting the volume change of gels induced in response to external chemical or electric stimuli into characteristic optical signals, they have been considered not only as a good platform for label-free chemical or biological detection, actuators or optical switches but also as a good model system to investigate gel swelling behaviour. Recently, we reported block copolymer photonic gels self-assembled from polystyrene-b-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) block copolymers, and demonstrated that selective swelling of lamellar structure allows extremely large tunability of the photonic stop band from UV region to IR region ($\lambda$ peak=350~1,600 nm). Herein we report block copolymer photonic gels which exhibit strong tunable optical hysteresis and their applications. As nonlinear responses in swelling of hydrogels were often observed, photonic gels exhibit optical hysteresis with change of external pH. We demonstrate such optical hysteresis can be precisely programmed by controlling ion-pairing affinity. We anticipate that photonic gels with carefully tunned optical hysteresis are applicable to optical memory devices.

  • Wave propagation in gyrotropic or anisotropic medium is analyzed in terms of the eigenmodes of the medium, which are admixture of TE and TM waves. The field composition and the phase velocity of the modes are also determined. The results of the analysis are applied to thin film optical waveguide using such medium as substrate and/or film. Based on the characteristic equations for phase constants of the waveguide, the condition for TE-TM mode convection is derived, and wave propagation in the guide is represented in the form of Jones matrix, which allows a new interpretation in the conversion efficiency of the thin-film optical waveguides.

  • The scanning Maxwell-stress microscopy (SMM) is a dynamic noncontact electric force microscopy that allows simultaneous access to the electrical properties of molecular system such as surface potential, surface charge, dielectric constant and conductivity along with the topography. The Scanning near-field optical / atomic force microscopy (SNOAM) is a new tool for surface imaging which was introduced as one application of the atomic force microscope (AFM). Operated with non-contact forces between the optical fiber and sample as well as equipped with the piezoscanners, the instrument reports on surface topology without damaging or modifying the surface for measuring of optical characteristic in the films. We report our recent results of its application to nanoscopic study of domain structures and electrical functionality in organic thin films by SMM. Furthermore, we have illustrated the SNOAM image in obtaining the merocyanine dye films as well as the optical image.

  • This paper examines the temperature characteristics of an Optical CT (optical current transformer) using the Faraday effect for measuring high current in a super high voltage-power apparatus. It is performed as follows by the sensor for embodying Faraday effect. $\cdot$ A single-mode optical fiber capable of maintaining a polarization state is used. $\cdot$ A light source is applied at 1310[nm] to a Laser Diode. $\cdot$ The Linear of Faraday effect to a large current is evaluated and $\cdot$ A possible application using an Optical CT was shown. An Influence of Faraday effect to the surrounding temperature measured -40~50[$^{\circ}C$], and the characteristic of the current sensitivity was reported. An application using the results of the temperature compensation system was used in order to compensate for surrounding temperatures. A possibility of applying Optical CT for electric power apparatus was advanced further. We were able to confirm that this temperature calibration method can minimize the fluctuation of the output signal depending on the temperature conditions.

  • Optical fiber sensors have been proven that they have the potential to detect high-frequency ultrasonic signals, in structural health monitoring field which generally refers to acoustic emission signals from active structural damages and guided waves excited by ultrasonic actuators and propagating in waveguide. In this work, the sensing properties of optical fiber sensors based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer were investigated in the metal plate. Analytical formulas were conducted first to explore the parameters affecting its sensing performances. Due to the simple and definable frequency component, the Lamb wave excited by the piezoelectric wafer was employed to study the sensitivity of the proposed optical fiber sensors with respect to the frequency, rather than the acoustic emission signals. In the experiments, according to above investigations, spiral shape optical fiber sensors with different size were selected to increase their sensitivity. Lamb waves were excited by a circular piezoelectric wafer, while another piezoelectric wafer was used to compare their voltage responses. Furthermore, by changing the excitation frequency, the tuning frequency characteristic of the proposed optical fiber sensor was also investigated experimentally.

  • This study has compared the two types of systems which measure the temperature of coal powder in feeder lines of boiler and analyzed operating data. We used RTD(Resistance Temperature Detector) and optic sensors to measure the temperature. From the characteristic comparison of data, field test and system operation, we confirm that the latter is more efficient than the former.

  • A noncollinear-phase-matching cone of second harmonic generation(SHG) was observed in a LiNbO3 crystal doped with l mol% MgO. Birefringence refractive indices can be accurately evaluated by analysing the temperature phase matching characteristic for SHG combined with the measurement of the half cone angle. The electro-optic coefficient can also be determined form the observed change of the half cone angle when a DC electric field is applied along the optic axis.
