  • Laser projection display is a full color display system for large area. In this system, laser beams are modulated at acousto optic modulators(AOM) according to the video signal. AOM consists of a $TeO_2$ crystal and a $LiNbO_3$ transducer. We calculated the acoustic wave propagating from transducer to acousto optic media and made AOM by the calculated results. We compared calculated results with fabricated AOM by measuring modulation efficiency at various frequency. The modulation efficiency of AOM is 85% at the carrier frequency of 144MHz and the rise time is 41.5 ns.

  • High-sensitivity signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) microphones are essentially required for a broad range of automatic speech recognition applications. Piezoelectric microphones have several advantages compared to conventional capacitor microphones including high stiffness and high SNR. In this study, we designed a new piezoelectric membrane structure by using the finite elements method (FEM) and an optimization technique to improve the sensitivity of the transducer, which has a high-quality AlN piezoelectric thin film. The simulation demonstrated that the sensitivity critically depends on the inner radius of the top electrode, the outer radius of the membrane, and the thickness of the piezoelectric film in the microphone. The optimized piezoelectric transducer structure showed a much higher sensitivity than that of the conventional piezoelectric transducer structure. This study provides a visible path to realize micro-scale high-sensitivity piezoelectric microphones that have a simple manufacturing process, wide range of frequency and low DC bias voltage.

  • The purpose of this study is to measure the lathe tool vibration and verify its usefulness using the fiber optic interferometeric sensor instead of using common accelerometer. To compare two vibration signals a Fabry-Perot fiber optic sensor(FOS) is directly attached to the left-side surface of the lathe tool and an accelerometer is attached near to the fiber optic sensor. Measurement signals from the FOS and theoretical results of receptance simulation are compared. When the amplitude of tool vibration increased the frequency shift phenomena was occurred. This means that mass effect occurred and vibration spectrum moved to the low frequency region. Generally this results is agreement to the regenerative chatter. The chatter frequency is not same as the natural frequency of the tool itself. The FOS can also applied to laboratory experiments for students. This experimental technique is perhaps the first attempts because of directly attachment technique. Therefore, suggested Fabry-Perot fiber optic sensor can be used to monitoring the tool wear and vibration.

  • We present both theoretically and experimentally the thermo-optic characteristics of micro-structured optical fiber (MOF) filled with mixed liquid. The performance of MOF depends on the efficient interaction between the fundamental mode of the transmitted light wave and the tunable thermo-optic materials in the cladding. The numerical simulation indicates that the confinement loss of MOF presents higher temperature dependence with higher air-filling ratios $d/{\Lambda}$, longer incident wavelength and fewer air holes in the cladding. For the 4cm liquid-filled grapefruit MOF, we demonstrate from experiments that different proportions of solutions lead to tunable temperature sensitive ranges. The insertion loss and the extinction ratio are 3~4 dB and approximate 20 dB, respectively. The proposed liquid-filling MOF will be developed as thermo-optic sensor, attenuator or optical switch with the advantages of simple structure, compact configuration and easy fabrication.

  • This paper deals with the effectiveness of a fiber optic solar lighting system that uses a Fresnel lens mounted on a two-axis solar tracker. A series of comparative analyses were made concerning its performance as compared to fluorescent lighting by using a simulation model based on ECOTECT and RADIANCE as well as referring to actual data. ECOTECT was used to model the test room (space) while RADIANCE was used for its indoor lighting conditions (environment). It was found that the average indoor light levels of fluorescent lighting fully satisfy the KS standard (KS A 3011, general office, class [G]: 300-400-600lux) whereas those of the solar lighting with light diffusers depends on the occlusion factor of roller shades installed on the south window.

  • There are some limitations to advance technology glaring and luminous Intensity uniformity known as the weak point of existing LED lamp. To improve the two weak points, there have been no special alternative methods so far. Instead, one method which is being used such as the twisting secondary lens or arbitrary structure to remove glaring and improve luminous Intensity uniformity. Based on this academic background, it is necessary to be examined on Technology of Optical System to solve the two weak points by using not complicated but simple methods. This paper will examine the angle of reflection in order to improve luminous intensity uniformity. Also, this research will present the method using lighting analysis program to verify a hypothesis. Through the analysis program, we could understand the simulation analysis method and got some problems about the analysis result. After analysis of causes through reinterpretation of problems, we have reached a conclusion that was changed according to reflectivity and the shape of aspherics by main cause which effected luminous Intensity uniformity and glaring.

  • In this paper, a novel intensity-based fiber optic vibration sensor using a mass-spring structure, which consists of four serpentine flexure springs and a rectangular aperture within a proof mass, is proposed and its feasibility test is given by the simulation and experiment. An optical collimator is used to broaden the beam which is modulated by the displacement of the rectangular aperture within the proof mass. The proposed fiber optic vibration sensor has been analyzed and designed in terms of the optical and mechanical parts. A mechanical structure has been designed using theoretical analysis, mathematical modeling, and 3D FEM (Finite Element Method) simulation. The relative aperture displacement according to the base vibration is given using FEM simulation, while the output beam power according to the relative displacement is measured by experiment. The simulated sensor sensitivity of $15.731{\mu}W/G$ and detection range of ${\pm}6.087G$ are given. By using reference signal, the output signal with 0.75% relative error shows a good stability. The proposed vibration sensor structure has the advantages of a simple structure, low cost, and multi-point sensing characteristic. It also has the potential to be made by MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical System) technology.

  • The buried fiber optic cable as a distributed intrusion sensor for detecting and locating intruders along the long perimeters is proposed. Phase changes resulting from either the pressure of the intruder on the ground immediately above the buried fiber or from seismic disturbances in the vicinity are sensed by a phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometer. Light pulses from a Er:fiber cw laser with a narrow, <3kHz-range, spectral width and a frequency drift of < 1 MHz/min are injected into one end of the fiber, and the backscattered light from the fiber is monitored with a photodetector. Results of preliminary studies, measurement of phase changes produced by pressure and seismic disturbances in buried fiber optic cables and simulation of ${\varphi}-OTDR$ response over long fiber paths, to establish the feasibility of the concept are described. The field experiments indicate adequate phase changes, more than 1t-rad, are produced by intruders on foot and vehicle for burial depths in the 0.2 m to 1 m range in sand, clay and fine gravel soils. The simulations predict a range of 10 km with 35 m range resolution and 30 km with 90 m range resolution. This technology could in a cost-effective manner provide enhanced perimeter security.

  • Two-dimensional(2-D) fiber-optic code-division multiple-access(FO-CDMA) system utilizes the optical orthogonal signature pattern code(OOSPC) to encode and decode 2-D data. Encoded 2-D data are spatially multiplexed and transmitted through an image fiber and receiver recovers the intended data by means of thresholding process. OOSPC's construction methods based on expansion of the optical orthogonal code, which is used in one-dimensional(1-D) FO-CDMA system, are introduced. Each OOSPC's performances are compared by using the bit error rate(BER) of interfering OOSPC's of other users. From the results we verify that a balanced incomplete block design(BIBD) construction has the best performance among other mehtods. We also propose a decomposed bit-plane method for parallel transmission and recovery of 256 gray-scale images using OOSPC's constructed by the BIBD method. The simulation result encourages the feasibility of parallel transmission and recovery of multiuser's images.
