  • Objective : Determining the location of paraclinoid aneurysms for microsurgery is important for selecting treatment options, especially when deciding on the release of the dural ring in direct clipping. We examined the reliability of using the optic strut as an anatomical landmark for evaluating the location of paraclinoid aneurysms. Methods : Cadaveric dissection was performed to establish the relationship of the optic strut to the dural ring. Results from these anatomic studies were compared with the three-demensional computed tomographic angiographic [3D-CTA] findings of nine patients with ten paraclinoid aneurysms between May 2004 and October 2005. These, 3D-CTA results were then compared with intraoperative findings. Results : The inferior boundary of the optic strut accurately localized the point at the proximal dural ring in cadaveric study. The optic strut and its relationship to the aneurysms was well observed on the multiplanar reformats of 3D-CTA. During microsurgery, nine of ten aneurysms were verified to arise from distal to the upper surface of the optic strut. Two aneurysms that had arisen between the inferior and superior boundary of the optic strut were observed to lie within the carotid cave. One aneurysm which had arisen at the inferior boundary of the optic strut and directed inferiorly was observed to lie within the cavernous sinus just after the release of the proximal ring. Conclusion : The optic strut, as identified with multiplanar reformats of 3D-CTA, provided a reliable anatomic landmark for the proximal rings and an important information about the location of aneurysms around the anterior clinoid process (ACP). Therefore, 3D-CTA and the optic strut could become an invaluable tool and a landmark in the assessment of the location of paraclinoid aneurysms for microsurgery.

  • This paper shows a multiplexing technique to maximize the application of a moire-fringe based fiber optic sensor to lots of structure. Especially, a novel fringe-based fiber optic sensor was proposed to overcome the difficulty of multiplexing of a previous moire-fringe-based fiber optic sensor. The novel fringe-based fiber optic sensor is composed of a single reflective fringe and two optical fibers. Therefore, the multiplexing is easily realized because of the simplicity of optic structure inside the sensor. This paper also proposed four models of the multiplexing techniques. The models are based on a wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technique and a time division multiplexing(TDM) one. Basically, the models would be profitable for a general extrinsic fiber optic sensor such as the fringe-based fiber optic sensor. Finally, the real optic system was manufactured by using the proposed model and successfully examined to prove the feasibility of the model for the application.

  • In this paper, we propose the time synchronization module on fiber optic repeater to use optic line delay for obtaining time synchronization between up-link and down-link, in the 2.3 GHz WiBro network using TDD/OFDM (Time Division Duplex/Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) Generally, when we use fiber optic repeater to remove the shade area, it occurs transmission delay which is caused by optic transmission between RAS (Radio Access Station) and fiber optic repeater and inner delay of fiber optic repeater. Because the WiBro system is adopting a TOO method and there exists the difference of switching time which is caused by these delay between up-link and down-link, it occurs ISI (Inter Symbol Interference), ICI (Inter Carrier Interference). These interference results in the reduction of the coverage. And the inconsistency between Up-Link and Down-Link switching time maybe gives rise to the interruption of communication. In order to prevent these cases, we propose synchronization module using analog optic line delay as the one of synchronizing up-link and down-link. And we propose the consideration factor for the designing time synchronization module and the feature of optic line of analog method. The measurement result of optic line time synchronization module of structure proposed is as follows, the delay error of $0.5{\mu}g$ and the insertion loss value below maximum 4.5dB in range of $0{\sim}40{\mu}s$. These results fully meet the specification of WiBro System.

  • The single crystal of LiTaO3 is well known eletro-optic material as well as the piezoelectric one applied to SAW filter. LiTaO3 has large electro-optic effects, so applied to optical switch, acosto-optic deflector, and optical memory device using photorefractive effects. The crystal growth of SAW-grade LiTaO3 has been studied many aspects, but there is no detail research about optic-grade crystal growth. The conditions of optic-grade LiTaO3 single crystal are as below. The optical transmittance must be over 75%, and axial and radial concentratiom uniformity below 1%. The variation of Curie temperature depending on Li/Ta ratio must be also below 2$^{\circ}C$ and no internal no internal cracks and defects. Because of the limitation of crystal quality, the growing of optic-grade LiTaO3 single crystal is very difficult compared with the growing of SAW-grade. In this research, upper conditions of optic-grade single crystal was investigated after growing of 1 inch diameter and 1.5 inch length LiTaO3 single crystal having no internal cracks and defects using Czochralski method. Curie temperature was determined with DSC and measuring capacitance and lattice parameter was calculated about the grown crystal and ceramic powder samples of various Li/Ta ratio. The result of Tc variation was below 1.2$^{\circ}C$ all over the grown crystal, so it is confirmed that LiTaO3 was grown under congruent melting composition having optical homogeniety. Also, the optical transmittance was about 78%, which was sufficient for optical device.

  • Purpose: To evaluate the tracing of optic nerve tract using manganese enhanced magnetic resonance Imaging. Materials and Methods: After injecting $30{\mu}l$ of $MnCl_2(1mol)$ (1 mol) Into the retina of female New Zealand white rabbit, the contrast enhancements at major anatomical structures of optic nerve tract were evaluated by high resolution T1-weighted Images 12 hours, 24 hours, and 48 hours after $MnCl_2(1mol)$ Injection using 3D FSPGR (Fast Speiled Gradient Recalled echo) pulse sequence at 1.5T clinical MR scanner with high performance gradient system. Also, for quantitative evaluation, the signal-to-noise ratios of circular ROI on anatomical locations were measured. Results: The major structures on the optic nerve tract were enhanced after injecting $MnCl_2(1mol)$. The structures, which showed enhancement, were right optic nerve, optic chiasm, left optic tract, left lateral geniculate nucleus, left superior colliculus. The structures on the contralateral optic pathway to the right retina were enhanced whereas the structures on the ipsilateral pathway did not show enhancement. Conclusion: The Mn transport through axonal pathway of optic nerve sys)em was non- invasively observed after injecting injecting $MnCl_2$ at the retina, which is the end terminal of optic nerve system. This Mn transport seems to occur by voltage gated calcium $(Ca^{2+})$ channel and In case of direct Injection Into the retina, the fast transpori pathway of voltage gated calcium channel seems to be responsible for Mn transport.

  • A fiber optic oxygen sensor has been employed to monitor the concentrations of dissolved oxygen in a bioreactor. The characteristics of fiber optic oxygen sensor was investigated, e.g. the dependency of agitation rate on the oxygen measurement and also the dependence of temperature on the performance of fiber optic oxygen sensor etc. We have also applied to monitor the concentrations of dissoved oxygen in real cultivation processes by using the fiber optic oxygens sensor. The fiber optic oxygen sensor can be applied to measure the concentration of metabolites by immobilizing some enzymes, e.g. glucose oxidase and also employed for the environmental technology.

  • In this research, fiber-optic pressure sensors were fabricated with rugate-structured porous silicon (RPS) diaphragms coated with PMMA (Polymethyl-Methacrylate). The reflectance spectrum of the PMMA/RPS diaphragm was almost the same as that of uncoated RPS diaphragm. However the mechanical strength of the PMMA/RPS diaphragm increased more than that of the uncoated diaphragm. As a result, the fiber-optic sensor fabricated with PMMA/RPS diaphragm could successfully detect more high pressure difference without diaphragm damage than the highest detectable pressure difference of the sensor with normal RPS diaphragm. The response data of the fiber-optic sensor recorded as a function of pressure difference were fitted by theoretical curves. During this process, elastic moduli of the used PMMA/RPS diaphragms were obtained numerically. The dynamic response properties of the fiber-optic sensor were also investigated under continuous variation of the pressure difference conditions.

  • This paper describe the method and the result of making a fiber optic gyrocompass measuring the heading angles of a ship with a fiber optic sensor. As the method seeking for the heading angles, it is possible to get the heading angles by measuring the output signals from a stationary fiber optic sensor in at least three directions such as a heading direction and other two directions having phase difference ${\phi}1$ and ${\phi}2$ to the heading. We made the static fiber optic gyrocompass by a high performance fiber optic sensor having scale factor of 210mV/deg/s and resolution of 0.5deg/hr using this principle. The accuracy of this system was $0.29^{\circ}$ from 20 numbers of data measuring the arbitrary heading angle.

  • Photoelastic experiment has two significant problems. The first problem is manufacturing a model specimen for complicated shapes of structures. The second problem is residual stress contained in the photoelastic model material. In this paper, the stress optic law that can be effectively used on photoelastic model materials with residual stress is developed. By using the stress optic law as developed in this research, we can obtain good results in photoelastic experiments using model material in which residual stress is contained. It is assured that the stress optic law developed in this research is useful. Therefore, it is suggested that the stress optic law considering residual stress can be applied to the photoelastic experiment for the stress analysis of the composite materials or bi-materials in which the residual stress is easily contained.

  • Septo-optic dysplasia is a rare congenital disorder characterized by the absence of the septum pallucidum, hypoplasia of the optic chiasma and nerves, and various types of hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction. Schizencephaly is an abnormal cleft in the brain, lined with gray matter which may communicate with the ventricular system. Septo-optic dysplasia with schizencephaly is associated with endocrinologic disorders, visual impairment, mental retardation, and seizures. We report a case of septo-optic dysplasia with schizencephaly which was diagnosed in the early neonatal period.
