EVOLUTION OF NUCLEAR FUEL MANAGEMENT AND REACTOR OPERATIONAL AID TOOLS

  • In this paper are reviewed the current status of nuclear fuel management and reactor operational aid tools. In addition, we indicate deficiencies in current capabilities and what future research is judged warranted. For the nuclear fuel management review the focus is on light water reactors and the utilization of stochastic optimization methods applied to the lattice, fuel bundle, core loading pattern, and for BWRs the control rod pattern/core flow design decision making problems. Significant progress in addressing separately each of these design problems on a single cycle basis is noted; however, the outstanding challenge of addressing the integrated design problem over multiple cycles under conditions of uncertainty remains to be addressed. For the reactor operational aid tools review the focus is on core simulators, used to both process core instrumentation signals and as an operator aid to predict future core behaviors under various operational strategies. After briefly reviewing the current status of capabilities, a more in depth review of adaptive core simulation capabilities, where core simulator input data are adjusted within their known uncertainties to improved agreement between prediction and measurement, is presented. This is done in support of the belief that further development of adaptive core simulation capabilities is required to further significantly advance the utility of core simulators in support of reactor operational aid tools.

기상청 현업 모형(UM)과 1차원 난류모형(PAFOG)의 접합시스템 개발 및 검증 (Development and Validation of the Coupled System of Unified Model (UM) and PArameterized FOG (PAFOG))

  • As an attempt to improve fog predictability at Incheon International Airport (IIA) we couple the 3D weather forecasting model currently operational in Korea Meteorological Administration (regional Unified Model, UM_RE) with a 1D turbulence model (PAFOG). The coupling is done by extracting the meteorological data from the 3D model and properly inserting them in the PAFOG model as initial conditions and external forcing. The initial conditions include surface temperature, 2 m temperature and dew point temperature, geostrophic wind at 850 hPa and vertical profiles of temperature and dew point temperature. Moisture and temperature advections are included as external forcing and updated every hr. To validate the performance of the coupled system, simulation results of the coupled system are compared to those of the 3D model alone for the 22 sea fog cases observed over the Yellow Sea. Three statistical indices, i.e., Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), linear correlation coefficient (R) and Critical Success Index (CSI), are examined, and they all indicate that the coupled system performs better than the 3D model alone. These are certainly promising results but more improvement is required before the coupled system can actually be used as an operational fog forecasting model. For the RMSE, R, and CSI values for the coupled system are still not good enough for operational fog forecast.

Mode identifiability of a cable-stayed bridge using modal contribution index

  • The modal identification of large civil structures such as bridges under the ambient vibrational conditions has been widely investigated during the past decade. Many operational modal analysis methods have been proposed and successfully used for identifying the dynamic characteristics of the constructed bridges in service. However, there is very limited research available on reliable criteria for the robustness of these identified modal parameters of the bridge structures. In this study, two time-domain operational modal analysis methods, the data-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-DATA) method and the covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification (SSI-COV) method, are employed to identify the modal parameters from field recorded ambient acceleration data. On the basis of the SSI-DATA method, the modal contribution indexes of all identified modes to the measured acceleration data are computed by using the Kalman filter, and their applicability to evaluate the robustness of identified modes is also investigated. Here, the benchmark problem, developed by Hong Kong Polytechnic University with field acceleration measurements under different excitation conditions of a cable-stayed bridge, is adopted to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results from the benchmark study show that the robustness of identified modes can be judged by using their modal contributions to the measured vibration data. A critical value of modal contribution index of 2% for a reliable identifiability of modal parameters is roughly suggested for the benchmark problem.

가축분뇨 공동자원화시설 관리운영 실태조사 (A Survey on Present Conditions of Operational Management in the Animal Manure Public Resource Center)

  • This survey was conducted to investigate the present conditions of operational management in the 45 animal manure public resource center (APRC) in Korea. The regional distribution, processing capacity per year, capacity of liquid fertilizer storage tank, solid-liquid separation, utilization of facilities, odor reduction facility, on-site odor strength, complained in the community, liquid fertilizer sprayed area, use the Agrix, land application recipe, composting degree, quality management and general grading were surveyed and evaluated. General grading was divided with 5 stages (very good, good, fair, lack and bad). The number of evaluated "very good" animal manure public resource center was 7, and "good" was 5 and more than "fair" was 27. However, the number of evaluated negatively including "lack" and "bad" was occupied as 40% of the 45 animal manure public resource center.

A statistical framework with stiffness proportional damage sensitive features for structural health monitoring

  • A modal parameter based damage sensitive feature (DSF) is defined to mimic the relative change in any diagonal element of the stiffness matrix of a model of a structure. The damage assessment is performed in a statistical pattern recognition framework using empirical complementary cumulative distribution functions (ECCDFs) of the DSFs extracted from measured operational vibration response data. Methods are discussed to perform probabilistic structural health assessment with respect to the following questions: (a) "Is there a change in the current state of the structure compared to the baseline state?", (b) "Does the change indicate a localized stiffness reduction or increase?", with the latter representing a situation of retrofitting operations, and (c) "What is the severity of the change in a probabilistic sense?". To identify a range of normal structural variations due to environmental and operational conditions, lower and upper bound ECCDFs are used to define the baseline structural state. Such an approach attempts to decouple "non-damage" related variations from damage induced changes, and account for the unknown environmental/operational conditions of the current state. The damage assessment procedure is discussed using numerical simulations of ambient vibration testing of a bridge deck system, as well as shake table experimental data from a 4-story steel frame.

기록연구사의 근무실태 및 제도운영에 관한 실증연구 (An Empirical Study concerning the Issues of Working Conditions and Operational System of Archivists in Korea)

  • 정부기관에 근무하는 기록연구사들의 근무실태와 직무만족, 제도운영의 개선방안을 파악하기 위해 설문조사와 면접조사를 실시하였다. 직무특성은 Hackman과 Oldham의 직무특성요인을 포함하여 전문성, 역할갈등, 스트레스, 이직의사의 9가지 항목으로 조사하였다. 직무환경은 의사소통, 참여, 인간관계, 상급자, 교육훈련의 5개 항목으로 구분하여 조사하였다. 직무만족은 일반적 만족도, 보람, 소명감의 3가지 항목으로 측정하였는데 모든 항목에서 매우 긍정적인 인식을 보여주었다. 제도운영의 개선을 위한 과제로는 조직편제, 업무분장, 인사관리, 중앙기록물관리기관과 기록관의 협력을 중심으로 의견을 분석하였다. 이상의 분석을 통해 시사점과 개선책을 제시하였다.

A laboratory study on synthetic fiber filter for further treatment of turbid stormwater from construction sites

  • On the purpose of conform the more stringent government regulation for turbid stormwater from construction sites, the feasibility and availability of synthetic fiber placing after the conventional protection barrier were tested in this study. Initially, comparative work on the filtering performance of fiber media and conventional gravel filter was carried out, 27% higher filtration capacity was obtained under the similar operational conditions. The filter efficiency was about 20 to 52% with a varying filter depth of 5 to 15cm, presuming at extreme storm flow conditions (800-1500 m/day of filtration rates). Fiber filter was found to have a similar filtration prosperity as grain media; namely, the separation efficiency is directly and inversely proportional to filter depth and rate, respectively. The effects of filter aid (polyaluminium chloride) on filter performance was also investigated, it greatly affected the turbidity reduction at the dosage of 2 mg/L. At the time of breakthrough, a simple filter washing was carried out, herein, the solid recovery achieved over than 88% and greatly determined by operational parameters. Based on the operational data, the empirical models aimed for predicting filtration efficiency were established, which can effectively determine the required filter depth and filtration area in field.

  • Recently the design of railway systems have been performed, based on the analysis of operational conditions and service targets, it is to optimize the effectiveness and efficiency of system operation. Many RAMS requirements have been developed to transform operation conditions into system design characteristics. However, our railway industry has not actived the application of RAMS into system design performance. According to short of RAMS application, many technologies that have been developed are not only applied the existing systems that is operating, but also have not succeed to apply for new systems. In order to design the effective and efficient railway systems that are optimized to operation conditions and service targets, a systems approach and RAMS management are necessary in railway development, operation and maintenance. Therefore, in this study, the RAMS performance requirement design methods are discussed. the allocation methods from system level to each devices of subsystems.

단속교통류에서 강우시 평균통행속도 산정을 위한 보정계수에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Modification Value for Estimation of Traveling Speed During Rainfall in Interrupted Traffic Flow)

  • 일반적으로 도로의 혼잡상태나 운영상태를 평가하기 위한 효과척도로서 연속류에서는 V/C비를 이용하고, 단속류에서는 평균통행속도를 이용한다. 연속류 및 단속류의 운영상태를 평가하기 위한 효과척도에는 도로조건과 교통조건이 주요한 변수로 적용된다. 그런데 도로 및 교통조건외에 강우시와 같은 기상여건이 도로의 운영상태에 영향을 준다. 연속류에서는 강우시 기상상태를 반영한 보정계수에 대한 연구가 선행되어 있으나, 단속류에서는 관련 연구가 미비하다. 본 연구에서는 단속교통류에서 평균통행속도를 산정할 때 반영할 수 있는 강우시 통행속도 감소에 대한 보정계수를 산정하였다. 도로 및 교통조건이 동일하고 강우시 및 비강우시 등 기상조건이 다를 때 강우시 통행속도를 종속변수로 하는 회귀분석을 시행함으로써 강우시 통행속도 보정계수를 산정하였다. 회귀분석을 통하여 산정된 강우시 보정계수는 첨두시간대, 비첨두시간대, 전시간대로 구분하여 산정하였다. 본 연구를 통한 강우시 통행속도 보정계수를 이용하여 기존에 이용되고 있는 도시내 도로의 운영상태를 평가하기 위한 평균통행속도 산정식을 보완할 수 있다.
