  • This paper describes experimental investigations of helium-air exchange flow through parti-tioned opening. Such exchange flow may occur following rupture accident of stand pipe in high temperature gas cooled reactor. A test vessel with a opening on top of test cylinder is used for experiments. An estimation method of mass increment is developed and applied to measure the exchange flow rate. A technique of flow visualization by Mach-Zehnder interferometer is provided to recognize the exchange flows. Flow measurements are made with partitioned opening for parti-tion rations $H_p/H_1$ in the range 0 to 1 where $H_p$ and $H_1$ are partition length and height of the open-ing respecticely. In the case of $H_p/H_1$ of 0 flow passages of upward flow of the helium and down-ward flow of the air within the opening are unseparated (bidirectional) and the two flows interact exchange flow rate is minimum through range of the partition ratios, Two flow zones i.e. separat-ed(unidirectional)flow zone and unseparated(bidirectional) flow zone exist with increasing the partition. length, The exchange flow rate increases with increasing the separated flow zone. It is found that a maximum exchange flow rate exists at $H_p/H_1$ of 1. As a result fo comparison of the exchange flow rates by changing the partition ration the fluids interaction in the unseparated zone is found to be an important factor on the helium-air exchange flow rate.

  • Objective : Preoperative prediction of the arachnoid membrane descent in pituitary surgery is useful for achieving gross total removal and avoiding cerebrospinal fluid leakage resulting from tearing of the arachnoid membrane in the chiasmatic cistern. In this study, we analyzed the patterns of arachnoid membrane descent during or after pituitary tumor surgery and identified the factors related to this descent. Methods : Analysis was restricted to pituitary macroadenomas not extending into the third ventricle or over the internal carotid artery. To minimize confounding factors, patients who underwent revision surgery, those who had a torn arachnoid during operation or small medial diaphragma sellae (DS) opening, and subtotal resections were excluded. We enrolled 41 consecutive patients in this retrospective analysis. The degree of arachnoid descent was categorized using intraoperative videos. Preoperative magnetic resonance findings, including tumor height, suprasellar extension, and variables including DS area and medial opening size, tumor composition, and displacement of the pituitary stalk and gland were evaluated to determine their correlations with arachnoid membrane descent. Results : Arachnoid membrane descent was significantly correlated with DS area and medial opening size. Based on T2-weighted images (T2WI) magnetic resonance (MR) images, tumor composition was significantly associated with arachnoid membrane descent. Other factors were not significantly correlated with arachnoid membrane descent. Conclusion : T2WI of tumor composition and preoperative MR imaging of DS area and medial opening provided valuable information regarding arachnoid membrane descent. These parameters may serve as fundamental measures to facilitate complete resection of pituitary macroadenomas.

  • In order to investigate the smoke movement in three dimensional room fires, the center fire, wall fire and corner fire plume in different sized fires were studied experimentally by rectangular pool fire using methanol as a fuel. As the fire size became larger for the center fires placed at the center of the floor, the air flow rate entrained through the opening, average hot layer temperature, flame angle deflected backwards and mean flame height was observed to increase. On the other hand, as the fire size became smaller, the neutral plane height in the door and time reached steady-state was observed to decrease. The average hot layer temperature, mean flame height and doorway neutral plane height obtained from comer fire were higher than those produced by wall fires and center fires. The simple model for describing the effect of walls on the mean flame height was presented. It was shown that the model provides a good description of the present measurements, when used with the assumption by Hansell(1993), that the increase of the average flame height is equal to the ratio of the open to the total perimeters of the trays. Also the two models for predicting the effects of walls on the mean flame height were presented. These models overestimated the measured values of the mean flame height above fuel trays close to a wall and in a corner by approximately 19-26%, respectively.

  • A model test is carried out to investigate flow-induced vibration of a Tainter gate in estuary sulices. The gate model scaled with the ratio of 1:25 is made of acryl panel dimensioned 0.66m in width, 0.5m in height in the concrete test flume. Firstly, natural frequencies of the model gate are measured and the results are compared with the numerical results in order to verify the model. The amplitudes of the vibration are measured under the different gate opening and water level conditions in flow from the gate outside to the gate inside. Also 5 revised gate models with bottom width increased 0.5 cm each are tested under the different gate opening and water level. The results are analyzed to study the characteristics of the gate vibration. These test results are assessed in comparison with formerly test results, as a result, presents a design method of Tainter gate to reduce the gate vibration and a basic data for the guide manuals of gate management.

  • The tests on the oral capacties which are divided into five groups on centric occlusion position, physiologic rest position, two mm open bite position, four mm open bite position, and maximum opening position of the mandible were conducted on the one hundread normal dental college students and staffs. The aims were to study the changeability of the fundamental oral structure, to get some helpful informations for the full denture wearers and related physiology, and also to find out further experimental standards. The results were as follows; 1. There was also some volumetric space in centric occlusion position. 2. The greater the voluntary opening degree of the mandible was, the greater the oral volumetric capacity was. 3. There were no correlations between the oral capacity and height, weight, and cheek thickness. 4. There were no correlations between the centric occlusion position and physiologic rest position, and voluntary positions of the mandible. 5. The inserted material into the oral cavity was much influential to the physiologic rest position.

  • For two possible paths of thermal ring opening reactions, the approximate reaction path functions, their norms and the approximate reaction path average energies are computed and compared. Illustrated examples clearly justify the postulate that the path with larger norm and lower average energy has lower barrier height than the other.

  • 4-panel of 1m height and 45cm width were fixed on the $40cm{\times}40cm$ bottom plate and the opening of the panel comer was 5cm. Diameter of stainless vessel is loom and its height is 2cm and it located at the center of the bottom plate. 78mL liquid fuel was filled in the vessel and its depth was 1cm. Flame temperature was measured with K type thermocouple, and radiation heat of flame was measured with heat flux meter. Flame height and its behavior was visualized with video camera. and mass burning rate was measured by fuel combustion time. According to the development of fire, flame swirling was begin. From the experiment the mass burning rate was larger and the height of flame was higher than the usual pool fire flame. Flame temperature and heat flux also increased far more than the pool fire. Consequently the swirling air flow through the openings between the panel and thermal buoyance contribute to increase of heat release rate, flame length and mass burning rate.

  • The experiments were carried out to decide the selective fishing gear of the shrimp beam trawl fishery. The model nets were made of General type, Double-level type and Grid type. The model experiments were carried out to test opening efficiency and towing tension. The experimental tanks were the flume tank [$8.0L{\times}2.8W{\times}1.4H(m)$] and the towing tank [$85L{\times}10W{\times}3.5H(m)$] in National Fisheries Research and Development Institute. The full scale experiments were carried out to compare the selectivity of General type net, Double-level type net and Grid type net in the southern sea of korea. The vertical opening (net height) of the model nets can be expressed as a function of the towing velocity as the straight line. The towing tension of the model nets can be expressed as a function of the towing velocity as the parabola. The shrimp catching rates of upper cod end in Boryeong and tongyeong were 78%, 9% respectively, but the rates of lower cod end were 23%, 91% respectively. The number bycatch rates of General type and Grid type were 23%, 11% respectively, and the weight bycatch rates were 34%, 31% respectively. A selective shrimp beam trawl net is Grid type in korea coastal sea.

  • Because of overload working condition of sintering cooler, the cooler fan often suffers the break or damage of rotor blade and fixing shaft. Therefore, internal flow characteristics of a steelworks sintering cooler fan by the duct shape of the cooler fan outlet, such as duct outlet opening ratio, duct height and dividing wall shape on the duct outlet flow pattern are examined in detail. The results show that relatively short duct wall height and attachment of dividing wall shape improves flow patterns considerably.
