  • The noise from the sunroof can be divided into the low frequency buffeting noise and the high frequency turbulence noise generated when a car runs at the high driving speed. The wind deflector suppresses the buffeting noise generation by accelerating the vortex shedding from the front edge of sunroof opening, and guides the flow direction so that air can pass smoothly over the sunroof opening. To reduce the buffeting noise and the high frequency noise, it is very important to locate a deflector in a proper position depending on the driving speed and the sunroof opening width. The deflector's sectional shape also plays an important role in efficiently reducing the buffeting and high frequency noise. In this paper, we determined the optimum deflector's sectional shape and examined the flow characteristics behind a sunroof deflector through CFD analysis with changing the deflector height, the driving speed and the sunroof opening width. It is found that the deflector needs to be located in the higher location to control the buffeting noise by shedding the higher frequency vortices to accelerating vortices from the sunroof front edge. The deflector may act as a new noise source at the high driving speed, then it is desirable to put the deflector at the proper height to reduce the flow fluctuations and the noise generation. We also made a road test to verify CFD analysis results in this study.

  • The band-gap opening in graphene is a key factor in developing graphene-based field effect transistors. Although graphene is a gapless semimetal, a band-gap opens when graphene is formed into a graphene nanoribbon (GNR). Moreover, the band-gap energy can be manipulated by the width of the GNR. In this study, we propose a site-specific synthesis of a width-tailored GNR directly onto an insulating substrate. Predeposition of a diamond-like carbon nanotemplate onto a SiO2/Si wafer via focused ion beam-assisted chemical vapor deposition is first utilized for growth of the GNR. These results may present a feasible route for growing a width-tailored GNR onto a specific region of an insulating substrate.

  • Openings for access to cargo holds are cut on horizontal stringers in every bulkhead of container carriers. But, they are positioned at the edge of stringer width to make minimum space for access and these openings are required to be stiffened by owners and classifications respectively. In this paper, the cargo hold bulkhead stringers with openings for 6,500 TUE container carriers were reviewed by FE analysis to be conducted with the results of hold analysis for 6,500 TUE container carriers classed to GL, DNV, LR and BV respectively, and purpose of this paper is to establish yard's standard of the reinforcement for these openings.

  • A model test is carried out to investigate the vibration of truss type lift gate in the four major rivers project. The gate model scaled with the ratio of 1 : 25 is made of acryl panel dimensioned 1.6 m in width, 0.28 m in height in the concrete test flume. Firstly natural frequencies of the model gate are measured and the results are compared with the numerical results in order to verify the model. The amplitudes of the vibration are measured under the different gate opening and water level conditions. The results are analyzed to study the characteristics of the gate vibration according to the small gate opening, the large gate opening and the overflow conditions. These test results presents a basic data for the guide manuals of gate management and a design method to reduce the gate vibration of truss type lift gate. Finally, the vibration of truss type lift gate are assessed in comparison with those of formerly tainter gate.

  • The effect of the welding for the offshore structure in the TMCP steel on the fatigue crack propagation rate and crack opening-and-closure behavior was examined. The welding anisotropy of the TMCP steel and crack propagation characteristics of the excessive loading were reviewed. (1) It seemed that a heat which was generated by the welding made a compressive residual stress over the base metal, so fatigue crack propagation rate was placed lower than in case of the base metal. (20 In the base metal, an effect of the anisotropy which has an effect of fatigue crack propagation rate of the excessive load and the constant amplitude laos was not found but in the welding material case, fatigue crack propagation rate of the excessive load in the specimen of the width direction was located in the retard side as compared with a specimen rolling direction. (3) A crack opening ratio of the used TMCP stel in this study was not changed after excessive loading but a retard phenomenon of crack propagation was observed. Consequently, it was thought that all of the retard phenomenon of crack propagation did not only a cause of the crack opening-and-closure phenomenon.

  • The purpose of this study is to experimentally evaluate the effect of improving seismic performance by applying the details of seismic reinforcement to the reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details while maintaining the original opening shape. In this study, based on CF specimens with specific seismic details, a total of four full scale specimens were designed and fabricated. The main variables are the width and spacing of steel dampers installed in the upper and lower parts of seismic reinforcement details, and the presence or absence of torsion springs installed in the hinges. As a result of the test, it was evaluated to be helpful for seismic retrofit and opening isolation of steel dampers installed at the upper and lower parts of the seismic reinforcement details and torsion springs installed at the joints. In particular, CFR2S specimens with torsion springs showed the best performance in terms of strength, stiffness and energy dissipation capacity with increasing displacement angle.

  • This paper investigates the relationship between J-integral and crack tip opening displacement, ${\delta}_t$ using Gordens results of numerical analysis. Estimation were carried out for several strength levels such as ultimate, flow, yield, ultimate-flow, flow-yield stress to determine the influence of strain hardening and the ratio of crack length to width on the $J-{\delta}_t$ relationship. It was found that for SE(B) specimens, the $J-{\delta}_t$ relationship can be applied to relate J to ${\delta}_t$ as follows $J=m_j{\times}{\sigma}_i{\times}{\delta}_t$ where $m_j=1.27773+0.8307({\alpha}/W)$, ${\sigma}_i:{\sigma}_U$, ${\sigma}_{U-F}={\frac{1}{2}} ({\sigma}_U+{\sigma}_F$), ${\sigma}_F$, ${\sigma}_F}$ $Y=({\sigma}_F+{\sigma}_Y)$, ${\sigma}_Y$

  • A model test is carried out to investigate flow-induced vibration of a Tainter gate in estuary sulices. The gate model scaled with the ratio of 1:25 is made of acryl panel dimensioned 0.66 m in width, 0.5 m in height in the concrete test flume. Firstly, natural frequencies of the model gate are measured and the results are compared with the numerical results in order to verify the model. In the flow from the gate inside to the gate outside, the amplitudes of the vibration are measured under the different gate opening and downstream water level conditions. Also revised gate models with 20 mm bottom width are tested under the different gate openings and water levels. The results are analyzed to study the characteristics of the Tainter gate vibration in the sea ward flow. These test results are assessed in comparison with the results in the lake ward flow, as a result, presents the dynamic characteristics of the Tainter gate and a basic data for the guide manuals of gate management.

  • Steel is produced through the steel-making process with a desired shape by a rolling press. Scrap is removed according to the sheet edge to improve the quality of the product. This machine is called a side trimmer. This study aimed to develop a side trimmer for automatically changing the width of the trimming knife without line stopping. This machine consists of a housing opening device and a turning device. The measuring technologies of sheet width, trimming knife rotation angle, and knife gap for increasing the control accuracy. This experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed technologies. It was reduced by 10% compared with the operation time of the conventional method.
