  • This study is carried out to understand application type and change of learning space and to find out actual situation of management in open planned elementary schools. The twelve elementary schools were selected based on case studies and fundamental data of the agencies performing basic plan, the actual situation of management was studied by interviews of principals and teachers. By the results, open planned elementary schools have been notably reduced after the year of 2004 and corridor expending type was broadly chosen as a plane type for open space. It was also shown that learning space was transformed to the independent type integrating open space to the unit classroom in most part of twelve cases. In addition, whole sliding doors fixed in open classrooms by some Provincial Office of Education didn't need certain physical shut-offs, and it was considered as one of useful alternatives to manage open space.

  • This study was carried out to investigate consciousness of users about management of multipurpose space introduced in open planned elementary school after the year of 1990's. Thirteen open planned elementary schools were participated through questionnaire and interviews. As the results, the positive response was maintained a superior position in the need of multipurpose space and changes of classroom management. Independence type in the arrangement of multipurpose space and the additional corridor type having extra moving line in comparison with the extensional corridor type were remarkably preferred, respectively. The consciousness of utilization about multipurpose space was comparatively low in a type having traffic line in surroundings of classroom compared to a type having entrance or a type having roundabout corridor. Finally, the group accepting changes positively showed high need to solve urgent problems about management of classroom.

  • This paper presents results from analysis of architectural plan drawings of 355 elementary schools recently designed for 4 years. Theses plans are analyzed by factors such as local distribution, number of classes, type of plan, total construction area, area per a class, area per a student, and area status of each space. The purpose of this study is to provide fundamental resources for architectural designing and planning of elementary schools through finding trend and status of elementary school buildings that have no detailed data of area index. The results of this study are as follows: 1. As a result from analyzing number of classes in the surveyed schools, schools having 36 classes are dominant and schools having 72 classes are also shown. Average number of classes is 34.1. This result reflect s that elementary schools have been planned as large-scale schools. 2. In terms of type of plan, we found out that instead of disappearing traditional single corridor type building, the open school building that have multi-purpose spaces are mainly designed. In addition to that, there are few schools with large class rooms. 3. In the status of area of each school, they have much larger areas than areas provided by building guidelines. Secondly, there are some schools with two times area difference even though they have same class number. Therefore, it needs to adjust the school building guidelines to practical needs in the consideration of elementary school building for compulsory education. Though the plans of recently designed school for 4 year s are more differentiated than past, there are few schools planned by appropriate plan design and area distribution scheme. As a consequence, some improvements like improvement of building guidelines are desperate.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract the rage on exterior colors of Elementary schools in harmony with natural colors as the colors of sky and trees, of Which the colors is basically composing the natural environment. The theory of harmony in NCS relatively expressing the changed colors according to the color stimulation condition is the contrast of same color fit for the nature. NCS has a systematic open mind considering parts in the whole. The study suggests appropriate strategy for Eco-color scheme. The result shows that it's desirable to select YR Group in the elementray school of exterior color design, The Eco color planned by NCS is expected to clarify the interrelationship between children and environment. This practical use should be continuingly tried in the color design of interior for elementary schools.

  • This study started by examining 24 newly-built elementary schools in Sejong City with regard to their present conditions of in-between space. After categorizing the space according to its spatial composition, 5 schools were selected and analyzed in relation to the current status and frequency of use of their in-between space. Among the (other schools, the analysis gave the following results: 1) There was much higher usage of the in-between space for rest/play than for learning, which suggested that more rest/play area and apparatus should be provided. 2) Piloti areas were preferred, and a greater number of activities took place in these places than in the adjoining open areas. 3) When the in-between space was combined with a passage (as in the case of E2 and E3), a separation must be provided in order not to interfere with the rest/play activities. 4) In planning the in-between space, priority should be given to activities over landscape purposes. 5) Diverse and easy access to the space must be planned, particularly as the main entrance is not directly connected to the space. Entry at the end of an adjacent building could be a possible solution.
