A Study on the Business Model Design and Economic Evaluation of Open Source Software License Compliance Platform (오픈소스 SW 라이선스 컴플라이언스 플랫폼의 비즈니스 모델 설계 및 경제적 타당성 분석)

  • Companies that use open source SW must comply with the "Open Source SW License" in order to use it freely. However, despite the potential legal responsibilities and risks associated with compliance, they do not know or neglect the risks. For this reason, cases of disputes, including license violations, are soaring. Recently, Open source SW license compliance platform services have been developed and actively utilized to address these issues. This study designed a business model for open source SW license compliance platform and conducted an economic feasibility analysis. The focus of the study is the establishment of a business model and the estimation of potential customers and actual purchase rates. For this purpose, we designed seven business model scenarios for promotion and sales period, and performed an economic evaluation using an expanded model of the Bass model, the Kalish model and the customer's maximum willingness to pay.

  • In many respects, the use and importance of open source software in companies and individuals are increasing as the days pass. However, software evaluation for users, software classification of filtering fundamentals research can not deal flexibly according to the characteristics of open source software. They are using a fixed classification system. In this research, we provide a classification model of open source software that can flexibly deal with the classification of open source software and the software category of new open source software.

  • In knowledge based society, information technology (IT) has been playing a key role in economic growth. In recent years, it is surprisingly notable that the source of value creation moved from hardware to software in IT industry. Especially, among many kinds of software products, the economic potential of open source was realized by many government agencies. Open source means software codes made by voluntary and open participation of worldwide IT developers, and many policies to promote open source activities were implemented for the purpose of fast growth in IT industry. But in many cases, especially in Korea, the policies promoting open source industry and its ecosystem were not considered successful. Therefore, this study provides the practical reasons for the low performance of Korean open source industry and suggests the pragmatic requisites for effective open source policy. For this purpose, this study applies soft system model (SSM) which is frequently used in academy and industry as a methodology for problem-solving and we link the problems with corresponding policy solutions based on SSM. Given concerns which Korean open source faces now, this study suggests needs for the three different kinds of government policies promoting multiple dimensions of industry: research and development (R&D)-side, supply-side, and computing environment-side. The implications suggested by this research will contribute to implement the practical policy solutions to boost open source industry in Korea.

  • The increased adoption of open source security management in supply chains is gaining worldwide attention. In particular, as security and threatening situations, such as solar winds, Kaseya ransomware, and Log4j vulnerability, are becoming more common in supply chains using software (SW)-defined networks, SW bills of materials (SBOMs) for SW products should be prepared to protect major countries like the United States. An SBOM provides SW component information and is expected to become required for SW supply chain management. We focus on SW supply chain management policies and SBOM trends in major countries and private organizations worldwide for safe SW use and determine the current status of Korea and ETRI's open source SW supply chain management trends.

  • 최근 이슈가 되고 있는 클라우드 컴퓨팅, 빅데이터, 모바일 등 다양한 분야에서 공개SW 기반 시스템을 도입하여 적용하는 사례가 증가하고 있으나, 수많은 공개SW 중 신뢰성 있는 솔루션을 선택하는 것은 많은 시간과 비용이 발생한다. 이에 공개SW 도입 시 고려해야하는 항목을 도출하여 선정지표를 개발하였으며, 실제 공개SW 도입을 위한 조사 및 선정 단계에서 선정지표를 활용하여 업무 적합성, 성숙도 등을 고려한 최적의 공개SW 선정할 수 있는 기준을 제공하고자한다. 또한 선정지표를 활용하여 WEB, WAS, DB 등 공개SW 솔루션에 대한 평가 사례를 살펴보고, 향후 선정지표를 활용할 수 있는 방안을 제안한다.

Development of Dental Medical Image Processing SW using Open Source Library (오픈 소스를 이용한 치과 의료영상처리 SW 개발)

  • With the recent development of IT technology, medical image processing technology is also widely used in the dental field, and the treatment effect is enhanced by using 3D data such as CT. In this paper, open source libraries such as ITK and VTK are introduced to develop dental medical image processing software, and how to use them to develop dental medical image processing software centering on 3D CBCT. In ITK, basic algorithms for medical image processing are implemented, so the image processing pipeline can be quickly implemented, and the desired algorithm can be easily implemented as a filter by the developer. The developed algorithm is linked with VTK to implement the visualization function. The developed SW can be used for dental diagnosis and treatment that overcomes the limitations of 2D images..

The study on software firm's catch-up Innovation Pattern: Focus on case study between Korean and U.S. Open Source Software Firms (소프트웨어 기업의 기술추격 과정 연구: 한국과 미국의 오픈 소스 소프트웨어 기업의 사례를 중심으로)

  • The objective of this study attempt to examine the prospect whether conventional catch-up theory is also applicable to knowledge intensive industry like Open Source Software(OSS), and the implication from this study can be working as a stepping stone for followers. To do this, we conducted Korean SW firm's interview, and examined U.S. firm's archivings and second source of informations by means of empirical study. We use the inflection point of paradigm shift and difference of technology regime as a framework for empirical study of catch-up process between U.S. and Korean OSS firms. We find that conventional catch-up theory is no more applicable to explain OSS firm's catch-up processes. We also identified the elements that will accelerate the catch-up processes more effectively from the comparison of technology regime between U.S. and Korean OSS firms. As a result, we diagnose the limitation of conventional catch-up theory and discuss the new technology regime which will, ironically, promote the catch-up processes from the condition of low appropriation.

  • Recently, concepts of the Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as artificial intelligence, big data, and cloud computing have been introduced and the limits of individual or team development policies are being reviewed. Also, a lot of latest technology source codes have been opened to the public, and related studies are being conducted based on them. Meanwhile, the company is applying the strengths of the open source software development methodology to proprietary software development, and publicly announcing support for open source development methodology. In this paper, we introduced several software development methodology such as open source model, inner source model, and the similar DevOps model, which have been actively discussed recently, and compared their characteristics and components. Rather than claiming the excellence of a specific model, we argue that if the software development policy of an individual or affiliated organization is established according to each benefit, they will be able to achieve software quality improvement while satisfying customer requirements.

  • In this paper we describe the integrated development environment for embedded software education. Our environment uses a cheap and widely available portable game console, Nintendo DS-lite. We have integrated open source development tools, and have implemented download shell, remote debugger. The results are all open source, and were used for university class for real embedded software education.

  • A virtual platform models a processor core and the peripheral devices constituting the SoC in software. Major companies utilize a variety of platforms for product development with optimal SW+SoC integrated system architecture design and IP reuse based Top-Down design flow using a virtual platform. In this paper, we propose a virtual platform based on OpenRISC, an open source RISC based core. The proposed virtual platform supports high speed emulation of approximately 20 MIPS using DBT (Dynamic Binary Translation).
