  • Objectives : As obese children have been increased, the interest in the impact of obesity on growth also have been increased. This study is to examine relations between obesity and skeletal maturity by analyzing body compositions and bone age. Methods : Subjects were composed of 233 children from 6 years to 17 years of age, without any other diseases related to growth, who visited the department of pediatrics, OO oriental medicine hospital and measured their body composition (body mass index, body fat ratio, fitness score) and bone age. Results : 1. As body mass index was increased, the skeletal maturity significantly was also increased. 2. As the mean of bone maturity was increased, the BMI was increased from the underweight type to the normal type to the overweight type; the bone maturity was increased as the fat ratio was increased from the normal type to the obese type to the excessively obese type; and the bone maturity was higher in the weak, obese type than the normal type when classified according to the Fitness Score. 3. The bone maturity of the overweight group in the BMI classification and excessively obese group in the fat ratio classification significantly were increased. 4. Skeletal maturity significantly was increased in children who developed secondary sexual character. 5. The significance of obesity causing increase of the skeletal maturity was higher in boys than in girls. 6. Only in the case of children without development of secondary sexual character, obesity caused an significant increases in the skeletal maturity. Conclusions : Obesity could cause the increase of skeletal maturity, and the obesity could affect more to the boys than girls and more to the children than teenagers.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to observe the correlation between Hot flush and pulse wave velocity(PWV), ankle brachial index(ABI) in the Climacteric women. Methods: We studied 63 climacteric women visiting OO hospital from 8th January 2007 to 22nd April 2009. The subjects were categorized in two groups, the hot flush group(37) and normal group(26). For the study, the subjects were selected by excluding the patients who receive treatment affect hot flush or have disease affect arterial states. We assessed PWV and ABI of two groups by Oscillometric method using VS-1000(Form PWV/ABI; Fukuda Denshi, Co., Ltd., Japan). From these results, we studied the correlation between hot flush and PWV/ABI by Wilcoxon Mann Whitney Test. Results: 1. It is shown that hot flush group was no significant correlation with normal group. There is no significant factor among R-PWV, L-PWV, R-ABI, L-ABI. However, L-ABI have shown relatively higher correlation with comparison to the other factors.(p-value<0.05) 2. R-PWV, L-PWV significantly increased in menopause group than in premenopause group though there is no relation to the hot flush. (p-value<0.01) Conclusion: Though the results showed no correlations between Hot flush and PWV/ABI in the Climacteric women, L-ABI showed relatively higher correlation with hot flush than others. R-PWV, L-PWV showed significant correlation between premenopause and menopause.

  • The fact that, under similar training activities performed in the same environment, march fractures develop in only a certain percentage of the trainees indicates that intrinsic factors are affecting the prevalence of these fractures. Among these intrinsic factors, the relation between foot arch type and the occurance of march fractures was investigated in this study. From 1997 to 1998, at one infantry medical company of infantry corps in Korea, 15 march fracture patients were detected among infantry soldiers. Quantitative measures of the foot arch (longitudinal) structure of 15(30feet) march fracture patients were established and compared with those of 15(30feet) normal person. The results were as follows. 1. From the lateral X-ray film, three parameters (i.e. calcaneal angle, forefoot angle, height to length ratio)were defined to describe the structure of the longitudinal arch of the foot. 2. The mean value of the calcaneal angle of march fracture group and normal control group showed 16.4 degree, 20.5 degree respectively. The difference between two groups was statistically significant (P>0.006), but those of forefoot angle and height to length ratio were not. 3. In the calcaneal angle twenty-six feet(87%) of march fracture group were lower than 17 degrees but twenty-five feet(83%) of normal control group were more than 17 degrees. That is, march fracture were more prevalent in feet with low calcaneal angle. 4. In the low arch foot, the orthotic device might relieve the energy load carried by the foot, thus reducing the incidence of march fractures, and should be analyzed in further study.

  • The outbreak cases of Cryptosporidium or Giardia from drinking water in abroad have drawn attentions on the public health. It is well known that Cryptosporidium is the most resistant organism against chlorine disinfection. To guesstimate the levels of Cryptosporidium and Giardia in Korean surface water, 1~2 samples from 22 drinking water sources in four Korean major rivers of Han, Keum, Nakdong, and Youngsan were monitored. In addition, two sites in Kyunganchon, a contaminated river were monitored for comparison. In source waters, detection rates of Cryptosporidium and Giardia were 15% (6/39) and 21% (5/24) with the range of 1~3 oocysts/10 L and 1~6 cysts/10 L, respectively. In Kyunganchon, they were 60% (6/10) and 70% (7/10) in the range of 1~9 oocysts/10 L and 10~72 cysts/10 L, respectively. When one of the source waters in Han river was monitored monthly, Cryptosporidium were found mostly in cold season. Matrix of the samples gave influence on the recoveries of the spiked protozoa. The recoveries of both Cryptosporidium and Giardia increased in the samples of Kyunganchon, known as contaminated area. However, protozoan recovery did not show significant relation with turbidity, the index of matrix contamination, which implies that there are additional unveiled features of matrix affecting the recoveries of the protozoa. The protozoan distribution in Kyunganchon showed significant relations with Cl. perfringens, anaerobic and spore forming indicator bacteria of fecal contamination by regression analysis, but not with turbidity, the general indicator of water quality.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between cold hypersensitivity and bone mineral density. Methods 28 outpatients who visited OO University Oriental Hospital from July 11th, 2013 to August 28th, 2013 were analyzed. Patients were subjected to thermometer, and those with thermal difference greater than 0.3 ℃ between upper arm and palm and also with more than VAS 4 of cold hypersensitivity were diagnosed with cold sensitivity. Lumba spine (L2-4) and heel bone measurement were obtained on dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) and Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT). Results 1. There was statistically significant correlation between T-score of DEXA and body weight (0.522), BMI (0.643), OSTA (Osteoporosis elf-assesment Tool for Asians, 0.579), BMI, T-score and Z-score of QCT. OSTA and T-score of QCT (0.521) also had statistically significance. 2. There was no statistically significant correlation between body fat, abdominal obesity rate, degree of cold hypersensitivity, upper arm and palm's temperature difference, palm temperature, height and Z-score, T-score of QCT or T-sore of DEXA. Conclusions Bone mineral density was lower in women who had cold hypersensitivity of hand and feet. But there was no statistically significant correlation between bone mineral density and degree of cold hypersensitivity, upper arm and palm’s temperature difference.

  • In vitro tissue culture of fat body of Hyphantria cunea in the medium containing [35S]-methionine reveaied that storage protein-i (SP-1) is taken up into fat body of prepupae and 1-day-old pupae. Using Western blotting and ligand binding method, we were able to identify the protein band of the SP-1 receptor protein. For the partial purification, the membrane proteins of fat body cells were solubilixed with 1% Triton X-1OO and applied to anion exchange chromatography. The results revealed the molecular weight of the receptor protein to be about 80 kl)a in SDSPAGE, and the P1 was estimated to be about 6.1. The mobility of the receptor protein in 8D8-PAGE was highly dependent on both temperature during electrophoresls and the condition of samples whether they were in reducing or nonreducing.

  • As XML has become an emerging standard for information exchange on the World Wide Web it has gained attention in database communities to extract information from XML seen as a database model. Recently, many researchers have addressed the problem of storing XML data and processing XML queries using traditional database engines. Here, most of them have used relational database systems. In this paper, we show that OODBSs can be another solution. Our technique generates an OODB schema from DTDs and processes XML queries, Especially, we show that the semi-structural part of XML data can be represented by the 'inheritance' and that this can be used to improve query processing.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to analyse autonomic nerve function of some examinees with dysmenorrhea by comparing the characteristics of dysmenorrhea patients' Heart Rate Variability(HRV) in examinees group with non-examinees group. Methods: We studied 110 patients visiting OO Korean hospital to take medical treatment for dysmenorrhea from September, 2006 to August, 2010. The subjects were categorized in two groups, 36 examinees and 57 non-examinees controls. We investigated the difference of HRV between two groups by student's T-test using SPSS for Windows(version 12.0). Results: 1. SDNN in examinees group is statistical significantly lower than non-examinees group. RMS-SD in examinees group is lower than non-examinees group non-statistical significantly. Mean PR in examinees group is higher than non-examinees group non-statistical significantly. 2. VLF, ln TP, ln VLF and ln HF are statistically significantly lower than non-examinees group. TP, HF and ln LF are lower than non-examinees group non-statistical significantly. LF is higher than non-examinees group non-statistical significantly. Conclusions: The results suggest that stress is related to especially examinees in dysmenorrhea patients by effecting autonomic nerve function. HRV can be useful to diagnose examinees' dysmenorrhea. The further studies would be needed to study about relation between stress, dysmenorrhea and HRV for settling this.

  • Objectives This study aimed to investigate the effect of SJS non-resistance technique-facial palsy (SJSNRT-F) using Korean medicine treatment on facial nerve palsy through three case studies. Methods SJSNRT-F, with other Korean medicine treatments, was performed on three patients who underwent treatment at OO Korean Medicine Hospital from March 2021 to August 2021. Additionally, the House-Brackmann grading system (H-B grade) and Yanagihara's unweighted grading system (Yanagihara's score) were evaluated in these patients. Results There was a significant increase in the Yanagihara scores. Except for one patient who was discharged early, two patients showed improvement in the H-B grade. Conclusions This study suggests that Korean medicine treatment including SJSNRT-F may affect the treatment of facial nerve palsy. However, better clinical studies are needed to confirm the same.
