  • Some of the mariculture grounds near Ongjin-gun, Korea, were designated as mariculture management areas in 2007. Areas are so designated when the environmental quality of the mariculture ground deteriorates or there is an outbreak of hypoxia or harmful red tide that kills mariculture organisms. We surveyed the water and sediment quality and examined the mortality of mariculture organisms in the Ongjin-gun mariculture area. In a survey conducted in 2016, the water quality was better than the environmental quality standards for mariculture grounds, excepts for dissolved inorganic nitrogen, and the sediment quality was good. However, there was still mortality of mariculture organisms in some of the designated management areas. The areas that met the environmental quality standards should be delisted and the areas in which we observed mortality should be classified as management areas. This will enable the sustainable development of aquaculture and preserve healthy mariculture grounds.

  • This paper is a research that investigated the distribution and status of coastal sand dunes spread along the shoreline of Ongjin-gun, Jung-gu in Incheon and evaluated their conservation status. In Incheon, the length of coastline along the West Sea shoreline is 1,053km. thus leading to an assumption that coastal sand dunes are dispersed their as many as other regional local government. However, there are no enough basic data on the distribution, characteristics, and the management status of other areas besides the 5 places on the list by the Ministry of Environment. Considering this fact, this paper additionally drew 21 coastal sand dunes in the shoreline of Incheon, including the 5 places on the list by the Ministry of Environment, through the standard of coastal sandhill selection. The additionally selected aimed to propose how to develop basic materials on the conservation status of coastal sandhills in Incheon through characteristic analysis by sandhill and qualitative evaluation.

  • This study was carried out to inventory the vascular plant flora in Deokjeokdo and its adjacent regions (Mungapdo, Soyado), Ongjin-gun, South Korea, from April to October 2014. Based on the voucher specimens, vascular plants in this area consisted of 108 families, 362 genera, 578 species, 5 subspecies, 66 varieties and 4 forms, totally 653 taxa. In the flora of this area, 5 taxa of Korean endemic plants were found distributed in the sites, including Hepatica insularis Nakai and Asarum glabrata (C.S.Yook & J.G.Kim) B.U.Oh. Korean rare and endangered plants found in this area were 1 taxa of Critical Endangered Species (CR) and 5 taxa of Vulnerable Species (VU). The floristic regional indicator plants found in this area were 67 taxa comprising 3 taxa of grade V, 2 taxa of grade IV, 12 taxa of grade III, 3 taxa of grade II and 47 taxa of grade I. Naturalized plants consisted of 67 taxa, such as Chenopodium album L. and Erigeron annuus (L.) Pers. were recognized widely distributed in the area.

  • We have investigated the flora of Yeongheungdo Island in Ongjin-gun, Incheon. A total of 13 separate field trips were carried out from March 2012 to October 2013. As a result, 302 taxa including 80 families, 211 genera, 261 species, 6 subspecies, 31 varieties and 4 forms were identified. These include the following: 1 taxon protected under the Act on the Protection and Management of Wildlife, 3 Korean endemic taxa, 8 floristic indicator species including 2 taxa of grade V, 3 of grade II and 3 of grade I, 33 naturalized taxa with the naturalization rate of 10.9% and 1 northern taxon vulnerable to climate change.

  • To improve productivity of aquaculture animals with management of culturing grounds, survey of mariculture management area in Ongjin-gun about water quality and sedimentary environment had been conducted on June, August and November in 2011. Water temperature in surface and bottom waters ranged from 9.49 to $24.14^{\circ}C$. Salinity and dissolved oxygen concentrations were in the range of 23.19~31.49 and 5.48~9.36 mg/L, respectively, depending on the variation of water temperature. The average concentration of COD was 1.57 mg/L and the concentrations of DIN and DIP showed entirely low level. As the result of grain size analysis, sand(56.66 %) and silt(34.60 %) were predominated. The Mz of sediment showed a variation of 2.59 to $6.62{\O}$ and sorting appeared to be poorly sorted. The concentrations of COD and IL in surface sediment ranged from 1.00 to $11.03mg/g{\cdot}dry$ and 0.72 to 5.29 %, respectively, which showed relatively good positive correlations. On the environmental assessment of trace metals in surface sediment, geoaccumulation index ($I_{geo}$) class indicated that sediments were not contaminated by most of metallic elements except Cr and As. Our result implies that this study area showed good water quality and sediments were not polluted by organic matters and metallic elements.

  • This study examined the antimicrobials properties of bacteria using the minimum inhibitory concentration method. The bacteria were isolated from 30 shellfish (oysters and short neck clams) collected from Jawol-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon and Iwon-myeon, Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, on the west coast of Korea. A total of 528 bacteria were isolated from June to October 2020 and were classified into land-originating (LB; 264 strains) and marine-originating (MB; 264 strains) bacterial groups. Of the LB strains, 10 genera were identified, of which nine were Enterobacteriaceae. All MB strains were identified as species of the genus Vibrio spp.. Antimicrobial resistance to one or more agents was observed in 77.3% of the LB strains, and 90-100% of them were resistant to ampicillin Escherichia spp. were not resistant to ampicillin. The overall multidrug resistance rate of the LB strains was 49.2%, with 85 resistance patterns. Antimicrobial resistance to one or more agents was observed in 98.1% of the MB strains, because most of the V. alginolyticus and V. parahaemolyticus strains were resistant to ampicillin. The overall multidrug resistance rate of the MB strains was 1.9% with 19 resistance patterns.

  • This study analyzed the correlation between generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), number of tourists, and area of accommodation facilities of small island such as Shin, Si, Mo and Jangbong island in Ongjin county, Incheon for use as basic data for estimation of MSW generation. An analysis of statistics data from september in 2012 to august in 2018 showed MSW generation was steadily increasing, and MSW generation in 2018 was increased by about 3.98 times compared to 2012. In summer, which is the tourist season, MSW generation was 2.43~9.39 times higher than in winter. MSW generation was influenced by the number of tourists. As of August 2018, generation rate of per capita of MSW was $0.839kg/cap{\cdot}day$, which was about 3.71 times higher than August 2013. Area of accommodation increased continuously from 2008 to 2017, increasing by about 8.32 times. The coefficient of determination between the area of accommodation and the number of tourists was 0.8418. Also coefficient of determination between area of accommodation and MSW generation were 0.9370 and 0.6025 before and after August in 2015, respectively. Accommodation was lacked due to increase of tourists. Although accommodation was scarce because of increase in the number of tourists since 2015, the coefficient of determination decreased due to the increase in waste generation.

  • The vascular plants of Is. Yeonpyeongdo regions, located in Ongjin-gun, Incheon were surveyed from May to October 2010. The vascular plants collected 4 times were consisted of total 524 taxa; 90 families, 315 genera, 459 species, 4 subspecies, 53 varieties and 8 formas respectively. Among them, 2 taxa endemic species of Korea and 8 taxa of Korean rare plants were investigated in addition to 38 taxa of specially designated plants announced by the Ministry of Environment. The naturalized plants were 66 taxa, therefore naturalized ratio was 12.6% highly.
