  • The global energy storage markets have gravitated to high-energy-density and low cost of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) as the predominant system for energy storage such as electric vehicles (EVs). High-Ni layered oxides are considered promising next-generation cathode materials for LIBs owing to their significant advantages in terms of high energy density. However, the practical application of high-Ni cathodes remains challenging, because of their structural and surface instability. Although extensive studies have been conducted to mitigate these inherent instabilities, a two-step process involving the synthesis of the cathode and a dry/wet coating is essential. This study evaluates a one-step β-Li2SnO3 layer coating on the surface of LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 (NC82) via the thermal segregation of Sn owing to the solubility limit with respect to the synthesis temperature. The doping, segregation, and phase transition of Sn were systematically revealed by structural analyses. Moreover, surface-engineered 5 mol% Sn-coated LiNi0.8Co0.2O2 (NC82_Sn5%) exhibited superior capacity retention compared to bare NC82 owing to the stable surface coating layer. Thus, the developed one-step coating method is suitable for improving the properties of high-Ni layered oxide cathode materials for application in LIBs.

  • The hierarchical-structured $LiFePO_4$ cathode materials were synthesized by one-step microwave synthesis, and their electrochemical properties were investigated. Addition of citric acid during the reaction lead to the formation of hierarchical structured $LiFePO_4$, which has both nano- and micron-characteristics advantageous for energy density and electrode fabrication. Adjusting the molar ratio of Fe to citric acid enhanced the electrochemical properties of $LiFePO_4$.

  • Solid silica supported ferric chloride ($SiO_2-FeCl_3$) catalyzed one-step synthesis of various benzimidazoles from o-phenylenediamine and aldehydes using $H_2O_2$ as the oxidant. The salient features of this method are simple and convenient procedure, easy purification and shorter reaction times.

  • New types of monocyclic ${\beta}$-lactams constitute an important class of compounds due to their unique structures and natures. Here, the design and synthesis of new 4-alkylthio monocyclic ${\beta}$-lactams 2a and 3a are reported. Significantly, compounds 2a and 3a, while keeping a monocyclic system, were designed to contain all of the substructures provided by the cleavage of C(2)-C(3) bond in penicillins. Efficient synthetic pathways for compounds 2a and 3a were established based on two different strategies. Compound 2a was synthesized from raw materials, using 4-acetoxyazetidin-2-one as a key intermediate, through a ten-step synthetic sequence in 3% overall yield. Compound 3a was synthesized from potassium salt of penicillin G (17), using the degraded product 20 as a key intermediate, through a six-step synthetic sequence in 11% overall yield. 4-Alkylthioazetidin-2-one derivatives, introduced in this study, could serve as valuable intermediates for the development of new monocyclic ${\beta}$-lactams.

  • A short synthesis of novel prostanoids, 12-epi-carbacyclins 3 and 24, has been accomplished using palladium chemistry as a key step. The silyl enol ether 10a prepared through organopalladium chemistry has been allowed to react with 1-octen-3-one in the presence of $Pd(OAc)_2$ to give compound 12 in a single step. The unusual chemo- and stereoselective reduction of the ${\alpha},{\beta}$-unsaturated ketone in 12 has been effected with (S)-BINALH. Subsequent desilylation and Wittig reaction have provided the Subsequent desilylation and Wittig reaction have provided the $PGI_2$ analogues 3 and 24.

  • Using a developed high-frequency induction heated combustion method. the simultaneous synthesis and densification of WC-xvol.%Co($0{\leq}x{\leq}20$) hard materials was accomplished using elemental powders of W, C and Co. A complete synthesis and densification of the materials was achieved in one step within a duration of 1min. The final relative densities of the composite were over 98.5% for all cases, under the applied pressure of 60 MPa and the induced current. The hardness of the composites decreases and the fracture toughness increases with increasing cobalt content. As the carbon to tungsten ration increases, the hardness increase, but the fracture toughness decreases. The maximum values for the fracture toughness and hardness are 15.1 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$(at 20vol.%Co, W:C=1:1), and 1928 $kg/mm^{2}$(at 5vol.%Co, W:C=1:1.3), respectively. Therefore we concluded that the HFIHCS method. which can produce WC-xvol.%Co within 1 minute in one step is superior to conventional ones.
