  • Tuberculosis (TB) is one of the largest health problems in the world today. And the incidence of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) lung disease appears to be increasing worldwide. Recently, an automated, nucleic acid amplification assay for the rapid detection of both Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampin resistance was developed (Xpert MTB/RIF). And fixed-dose combinations of anti-TB drugs and linezolid have been introduced in the treatment of TB. And new NTM species, named Mycobacterium massiliense, which is very closely related to Mycobacterium abscessus was reported. In this review, these recent advances in the diagnosis and treatment of TB and clinical characteristics of M. massiliense lung disease are discussed.

  • For decolorization of synthetic dyes, Isolate fungi were investigated for the decolorization of 8 industrial dyes. One fungus isolated from textile wastewater collected from Banweol industrial complex, Korea showed excellent ability for removing synthetic dyes. Internal Transcribed Spacers (ITS) sequencing result was confirmed as the new Basidomycetes species. HUE05-1 The optimal decolorizaton conditions were pH5, 30$^{\circ}C$ and aerobic condition. HUE05-1 was completely decolorized all dyes in both solid and liquid condition. The result is decolorization effect at Reactive Orange 16; 97.12%, Reactive Blue 19; 92.09%, Reactive Blue 49; 97.04%, Reactive Yellow 145; 95.53%, Acid Orange 10; 99.18%, Acid Violet 43; 98.73%, Acid Blue 350; 94.71%, Disperse Blue 106; 90.07%.

  • Some materials belonging to the Leptostrobus myeongamensis Kim were found in the Upper Triassic Amisan Formation, Nampo Group, Korea. This species is closely associated with the foliage of Czekanowskia ex gr. rigida Heer. Although none of Leptostrobus myeongamensis Kim has been found in organic connection with Czekanowskia leaves, it is considered that they belong to the same taxa based on their common occurrence. The occurrence of Leptostrobus myeongamensis Kim from the Late Triassic floras of Korea is one of the oldest records in the Mesozoic floras found in the world.

  • Porphyroglossum is the last one of nine genera within the family Gelidiaceae that has yet to be analyzed by molecular markers. We analyzed rbcL and cox1 genes from P. zollingeri specimens collected near the type locality in Indonesia and compared them with other gelidioid algae. Thalli are cartilaginous, complanate, and up to 15 cm high. Abundant rhizoidal filaments are concentrated in the medullary layer. Tetrasporangial sori are on small, determinate ramuli. In all gene analyses, P. zollingeri consistently nested within Gelidium. The sister relationship of P. zollingeri to G. floridanum was well resolved. Because Gelidium has priority over Porphyroglossum, a new combination is proposed, viz. Gelidium zollingeri. Network analysis of the four cox1 haplotypes revealed many missing haplotypes, indicating high genetic diversity in the species.

  • The aim of the present research program was to isolate a strain of actinomycetes producing antifungal substance. Soil samples were collected from various sites in Korea and a number of actinomycetes were isolated from the soil samples by applying selective agar for actinomycetes. Among isolates, a strain (NA -52) producing antifungal substance against Pyricularia oryzae was selected. Chemotaxonomic and numerical identification were carried out for the isolate. Fifty taxonomic unit characters were tested and the data were analyzed numerically using TAXON program. The isolate was identified as a synonym of streptomyces diastaticus belong to cluster No. 19 (Streptomyces diastaticus). But it showed a low similarity to S. diastaticus in simple matching coefficients, hence it was considered as one new species in Streptomyces.

  • The roots of Juglans mandshurica Maximowicz (Juglandaceae) have been used as a folk medicine for treatment of cancer in Korea. Several naphthoquinones and naphthalenyl glucosides from Juglans species have been reported (1-7). In the course of isolating cytotoxic compounds from the roots of this plant. we have isolated six naphthalene glycosides. four tetralone, one naphthalene carboxylic acid glucoside and nine diarylheptanoids (8-13). • The introduction of invasive marine species into new environments by ship's ballast water, attached to ships' hulls and via other vectors has been identified as one of the four greatest threats to the world's oceans by Global Environment Facility (GEF). EMO (International Maritime Organization) is carrying out the international restriction of the effluence suppression and treatment of Ship's ballast water by Ballast Water Management Convention. In this paper, to deal with this international restriction convention and to consider economic potential of ship's ballaster treatment market near future, the equipment and technology of ship's ballaster water treatment was studied.

  • This paper is the result of constructing information processing system such as living creatures´ brain based on artificial life techniques. The living things are best information processing system in themselves. One individual is developed from a generative cell. And a species of this individual has adapted itself to the environment through evolution. We present a new type of neural architecture consistiong of chaotic neurons and implementation. To evolve chaotic neural systems, we use cellular automata. In order to obtain the best neural networks in the environment, we evolve the arrangement of initial cells. The cell, that is neuron of neural networks, is modeled on chaotic ...

  • One new sterol glucoside, $gomphsterol\;{\beta}-D-glucoside$ 1 along with known compounds, ${\beta}-sitosterol$, stigmasterol, campesterol, $stigmasterol-{\beta}-D-glucoside$, friedelin, 3-epi-friedelinol, allantoin, and $chrysoeriol-7-O-{\beta}-D-glucoside$ have been isolated from the aerial parts of Gomphrena globosa (Amaranthaceae). On the basis of spectroscopic (including 2D NMR) and chemical studies, the structure of 1 was elucidated as $(22E,24S)-24-ethylcholesta-7,9(11),22-trien-3{\beta}-ol-3-O-{\beta}-D-glucopyranoside$. Known compounds are reported for the first time from this plant species.

  • A new aromatic amide, methyl-N-(3-carbamoylpropionyl) anthranilate was isolated for the first time as a natural compound and one known $C_{19}-diterpene\;alkaloid$, avadharidine was also obtained from the root of Aconitum pseudolaeve var. erectum. The\;LD_{50}$ values of water extract and MeOH extract of the root of Aconitum pseudolaeve var. erectum in mice were 1. 23 g (13. 6 g crude drug) and 0. 77 g(5. 13 g crude drug)/kg, p.o., respectively.
