Broad Spectrum Anti-bacterial Activity of the Leaves, Stem and Root Barks of Myristica subabulata

  • A number of Myristica species are used in herbal medicine for a variety of ailments. The methanol extracts of the leaves and the stem and root barks of Myristica subabulata were fractionated into petrol, dichloromethane and finally ethyl acetate. These were then screened against a total of 31 micro-organisms comprising of 13 G +ve, 12 G ve, one protozoa and 5 moulds. A broad-spectrum anti-bacterial activity was observed. As compared to fractionated the un-fractionated extracts exhibited much better level of activity.

  • This paper is proposed to describe three new species, two varieties and one forma of flowering plants from central Korea and the Island of Cheju in southern Korea. New Record of Arctoseius cetratus (Sellnick, 1940) (Mesostigmata: Ascidae) Phoretic to Sciarid Fly from Mushroom Culture in Korea

  • The Mesostigmata is an order of Subclass Acari either parasiting to diverse invertebrates or free-living predatory in terrestrial ecosystem. Phoresy is one of the unique behaviors of wingless arthropod dispersal by attaching winged arthropods. We collected mites attached on the dorsal part of abdomen adult sciarid fly, from mushroom culture. The mites were identified as Arctoseius cetratus Sellnick, 1940 in the family of Ascidae. Arctoseius cetratus has short J2, Z1, Z2, and S1, S2 setae, not reaching the bases of following setae. Posterior half of dorsal shield with longitudinal garland of puncta between J and Z setae, peritremes extending anteriorly to midlevel of coxaII. The genus Arctoseius and species Arctoseius cetratus are the first record in Korea. We provided the detail description of the species including the identification key in the family with some ecological notes.

  • To shed light on the genetic differences among food-originated coagulase-negative Staphylococcus (CNS), we performed pan-genome analysis of five species: Staphylococcus carnosus (two strains), Staphylococcus equorum (two strains), Staphylococcus succinus (three strains), Staphylococcus xylosus (two strains), and Staphylococcus saprophyticus (one strain). The pan-genome size increases with each new strain and currently holds about 4,500 genes from 10 genomes. Specific genes were shown to be strain dependent but not species dependent. Most specific genes were of unknown function or encoded restriction-modification enzymes, transposases, or prophages. Our results indicate that unique genes have been acquired or lost by convergent evolution within individual strains.

  • A taxonomic study on the freshwater harpacticoids of the genus Attheyella has been accomplished as one of the serial researches on the family Canthocamptidae in South Korea. As a result, a total of seven species belonging to Attheyella are listed, three of which are new to Korean fauna: A. crassa (Sars), A. nakaii (Brehm), and A. orientalis Chappuis. A key to the species of the genus Attheyella known from Korea is prepared.

  • An eumenid subspecies Pararrhynchium paradoxum koreanum Giordani Soika, 1986 is newly combined to the genus Pseudepipona de Saussure, 1856. Although tegula of this subspecies is similar to one of Allodynerus, shape of scutellar crest and related structures in both sexes and peculiar shape of mandible in male are critically justifiable for the genus Pseudepipona. This form is a discrete species in the genus, thus named as Pseudepipona koreanum (Giordani Soika, 1986) n. comb. The original description of this species was based on the sole male specimen and hardly diagnostic, just providing coloration compared with the nominotypical subspecies of P. paradoxum. A redescription of males and description of the hitherto unknown female are provided.

First Record of Sphingid Moth, Macroglossum corythus (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) from Korea

  • A sphingid species, Macroglossum corythus Walker, 1856 is newly recorded from Korea. Macroglossum corythus can be characterized by grayish or dark greenish fore- and hindwings, blackish basal, ante- and postmedial lines with a blackish discal dot on the forewing and transverse antemedial line, as well as a strongly dentate postmedial line and a thick, dark brownish tinged subterminal line on the hindwing. The male genitalia of Macroglossum corythus can be characterized by the long saccular process of valva and the phallus with one hooked distal process and the large penshaped cornutus and a notched ridge. The female genitalia of Macroglossum corythus can be characterized by the long tubular ductus bursae and the long ovate corpus bursae with multiple stripes and a long triangular patch of minute signa. To date, six species of the genus Macroglossum have been identified in Korea.

  • As a part of ecological survey of Dokdo Islands, Korea the hydroid collections were made in its intertidal and subtidal zones by the one of present authors and others during the periods from March 1993 to May 1999. The specimens were identified into 15 species of 11 families (Corymorphidae, Corynidae, Eudendriidae, Solanderiidae, Boungainvilliidae Tubulariidae, Lafoeidae, Haleciidae, Campanulariidae, Sertulariidae and Pulmulariidae) in two orders (Athecatae and Thecatae). Two species of them, Fukaurahydra anthoformis (Corymorphidae) and Rhizorhagium sagamiense (Bougainvilliidae) were turned out to be new to the Korean fauna.

New record of Ulva sublittoralis (Ulvales, Chlorophyta) in Korea

  • A marine ulvalean species (Chlorophyta) was collected from the eastern coast of Korea. This species is morphologically characterized by a distromatic, dark to medium green and mostly irregularly orbicular or irregularly expanded thallus with entire or undulate margin without serrations. Vegetative cells are irregularly polygonal with distinctly rounded corners in shape, and have chloroplast completely covering the outer cell wall and one to two pyrenoids per cell. In a phylogenetic tree based on ITS (Internal Transcribed Spacer) sequences, this Korean alga nests in the same clade with Ulva sublittoralis, as a sister clade of U. californica, U. flexuosa and U. tanneri, which share the irregularly orbicular or expanded thallus normally without teeth cells. The genetic divergence between them is intraspecific within Ulva. Accordingly, it is identified as U. sublittoralis based on the morphological and molecular data. This is the first record of Ulva sublittoralis in the Korean marine algal flora.

  • A taxonomic study of South Korean Netelia (Parabates) is presented. Three species are recognized, and one of which [N. (P.) nigricarpus] is reported for the first time from South Korea. Diagnoses and photographs of the known species are provided.
