  • A new nickel(II) complex $[NiL^1]^{2+}$ ($L^1$ = 1-(2-aminoethyl)-3-(N-{2-aminoethyl}aminomethyl-1,3-diazacyclohexane) containing one 1,3-diazacyclohexane ring has been prepared selectively by the metal-template condensation of formaldehyde with N-(2-aminoethyl)-1,3-propanediamine and ethylenediamine at room temperature. The complex reacts with nitroethane and formaldehyde to yield the pentaaza macrocyclic complex $[NiL^2]^{2+}$ ($L^2$ = 8-methyl-8-nitro-1,3,6,10,13-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]heptadecane) bearing one C-$NO_2$ pendant arm. The reduction of $[NiL^2]^{2+}$ by using Zn/HCl produces $[NiL^3(H_2O)]^{2+}$ ($L^3$ = 8-amino-8-methyl-1,3,6,10,13-pentaazabicyclo[13.3.1]heptadecane) bearing one coordinated C-$NH_2$ pendant arm that is readily protonated in acid solutions. The hexaaza macrocyclic complex $[NiL^4]^{2+}$ ($L^4$ = 8-phenylmethyl-8-nitro-1,3,6,8,10,13-hexaazabicyclo[13.3.1]heptadecane) bearing one N-$CH_2C_6H_5$ pendant arm has also been prepared by the reaction of $[NiL^1]^{2+}$ with benzylamine and formaldehyde. The nickel(II) complexes of $L^1$, $L^2$, and $L^4$ have square-planar coordination geometry in the solid states and in nitromethane. However, they exist as equilibrium mixtures of the square-planar $[NiL]^{2+}$ (L = $L^1$, $L^2$, or $L^4$) and octahedral $[NiL(S)_2]^{2+}$ species in various coordinating solvents (S); the proportion of the octahedral species $[NiL(S)_2]^{2+}$ is strongly influenced by the ligand structure and the nature of the solvent. Synthesis, spectra, and chemical properties of the nickel(II) complexes of $L^1-L^4$ are described.

  • Red pepper is one of the most important spices popularly utilized in Korea. Because of the differences in tariff rates between red pepper powder and seasoned red-pepper sauce, seasoned red-pepper sauce is often therefore imported by consumers, then dried, ground, and added to red pepper powder for cost effective purposed to use the product the most effectively. In this study, we combined species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays (for red pepper, garlic, onion, spring onion, and ginger) with whole-genome amplification (WGA). Thirty-nine red pepper powders were well in accordance with their labels. However, six red pepper powder and five seasoned red-pepper sauce products failed to meet their compliance requirements. As a consequence, our monitoring results revealed that the overall mislabeling rate detected in this study was identified at 22%. Thus, our findings showed that the species-specific PCR in conjunction with WGA was an ideal method to identify raw materials that are used in the manufacturing of red pepper powder and seasoned red-pepper sauce.

  • The flora survey on Chungnyeongsan and Seorisan was conducted 6 times from 1998 to 2000.817 taxa such as 112 families 415 genera 688 species 1 subspecies 116 varieties 12 forma were recorded. Dominant species in investigated areas was Quercus mongozica and some deciduous broad-leaved species, such as Quercus sp., Acer sp., Fraxinus sp., Carpinus sp., etc. were codominant species in these areas. Pinus koraiensis and Larix teptozepis plantations were also found in these areas. The 16 taxa of rare plants protected by Forestry Service were found in these areas and among them 10 taxa were new populations which had not been recorded in these areas. Discovery of Erunthis stellata, Aconitum koreanum, Paeonia japonica, Scopotia japonica and Acunthopanax senticosus populations indicate that these areas could be regarded as very important one in a biogeographical aspect. Endemic plants were listed 35 taxa and among them 22 taxa including Corydalis maculata, Ulmus macrocarpa, Scrophutaria horuiensis, Cirsium setidens, etc. were new one. Naturalized plants were listed 39 taxa and among them 30 taxa were new one. Lower naturalized index(NI) and higher urbanized index(UI) were recorded compared to those of neighbored areas. There were many kinds of threatening factors fur the plant resources in survey areas, so it is necessary to limit the number of visitors and to introduce the natural relaxation system.

  • Biosurfactants reduce surface and interfacial tension due to their amphiphilic properties and are an eco-friendly alternative for chemical surfactants. In this study, a new yeast strain JAF-11 that produces a biosurfactant was selected using drop collapse method, and the properties of the extracts were investigated. The nucleotide sequences of the strain were compared with closely related strains and identified based on the D1/D2 domain of the large subunit ribosomal DNA (LSU) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions. Neodothiora populina CPC 39399T, the closest species with strain JAF-11, showed a sequence similarity of 97.75% for LSU and 94.27% for ITS, respectively. The result suggests that the strain JAF-11 represents a distinct species that cannot be assigned to any existing genus or species in the family Dothideaceae. Strain JAF-11 produced a biosurfactant reducing the surface tension of water from 72 mN/m to 34.5 mN/m on the sixth day of culture and the result of measuring the critical micelle concentration (CMC) by extracting the crude biosurfactant was found to be 24 mg/l. The molecular weight 502 of the purified biosurfactant was confirmed by measuring the fast atom bombardment mass spectrum. The chemical structure was analyzed by measuring 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 13C NMR, and two-dimensional NMRs of the compound. The molecular formula was C26H46O9, and it was composed of one octanoyl group and two hexanoyl groups to myo-inositol moiety. The new biosurfactant is the first report of a compound produced by a new yeast strain, JAF-11.

  • Diadegma fenestrale is known as a parasitoid of the potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella. The potato tuber moth, Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) is one of the most destructive pest of potatoes. Also, we found this species attacking the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae). Ratio of parasitism is 20-30% and cocoon of lepidopteran was parasitic ichneumonid species after 3 days. This species and the genus Diadegma are recorded for the first time from Korea. In this paper, description of the parasitoid and photographs of the diagnostic characteristics are provided.

  • The genera Dero and Allonais belong to the family Naididae. Most species in the genus Dero have unique morphological characters including a branchial fossa and/or gills at the posterior end of the body. The genus Allonais has no eyes unlike its close relative the genus Nais. Of these genera, one species of Dero, D. obtusa, was recently reported in Korea. However, the genus Allonais has not been recorded in Korea. Here, we report Dero dorsalis Ferroni$\grave{e}$re, 1899 and Allonais pectinata (Stephenson, 1910) with a diagnosis and illustrations.
