Consideration on Textile in Respect on Its History -Textile in Dining Space- (텍스타일의 역사적 고찰 - 식공간에서의 텍스타일 -)

  • We live seeing, touching, or throwing on considerable textile in our life consciously and unconsciously. Since a Korean-style house is a dwelling space in life style of sitting on the floor with ondol(Korean floor heater), use of textile is limited to bedding goods. However, as western life style takes firm root, use of textile for interior design is increasing. As well, as apartments and foreign style houses have gotten lodgment since 1980, life style is being changed rapidly. So, textile became required factors in dining space where little textile existed. Through literature, history of textile is considered and design image concept is created based on the consideration. In addition, the created concept can be applied to various textile design, which can be a good tool to express eating culture of the country as well as the country's image.

An Experimental Study on Control Performance of Radiant Floor Cooling Using Ondol (온돌을 이용한 바닥복사냉방의 제어성능에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The objectives of this study are to analyze the application of radiant floor cooling and to evaluate the control methods through experiments when the radiant heating system is used for cooling. Through the experiment analysis the control methods such as on/off control, variable flow control and outdoor reset with indoor temperature feedback control are evaluated and compared. The cooling curve (reset ratio) is found for radiant cooling, which shows tole relation between outside air temperature and supply water temperature. Comparison of cooling methods shows that outdoor reset with indoor temperature feedback control is more appropriate than on/off control and variable flow control with regard to prevention of the condensation and thermal comfort.

  • In Pyonjon, Kings received high-ranked officials, heard preachings of classical literatures. State affairs were also discussed here. In palaces of the Chosun Dynasty, Pyonjon used to be regarded as the most important building second to the main hall. In Changduk palace, Sonjongjon was the original Pyonjon. But, before the end of the 17th century, Huijongdang began to be called Pyonjon, and after the 19th century, Huijongdang became Pyonjon officially. Sonjongjon was located beside the main hall, while Huijongdang before the King's bedroom. The floor of the former building was covered with brick but Huijongdang covered with ondol and wooden floorings. In Sonjongjon, every man sit on the chair, but in Huijongdang King and officials used to sit down on the floor. The fact that Huijongdang became Pyonjon replacing to Sonjongjon meant change of building arrangement in the palace and usage of inner space.

  • This study investigated the present traditional Korean farmhouse based on a survey of 30 households from Oiam-Ri folk Village in Chung-Nam Province. This study was primarily concerned with the present housing; the size and plan of the house, lighting and heating, the finishing materials of anbang(the master's bedroom or ondol) and the kinds of fumiture. I was also interested in identifying the socio-demographic and physical variables that influenced the housing, both the ordinary farm households and the descendent of nobility households. Bibliographical studies, cultural approaches, field surveys with tape recordings, and questionnaires were used to collect the data. The results showed that the types of house plans were mixed from the southern region(one-line type) and middle region(courtyard type). The heating system and the fuel for the ondol anbang has changed entirely from wood burning system to oil boiler system. The finishing material of the anbang floor changed from traditional oil paper and straw mats to vinyl flooring. Traditional fumiture and small decor items are disappearing and are being replaced by modem items, but the descendents of the nobility household kept many traditional type of fumiture and small decor items.

Effect of Ondol Environment on Physiological Regponseg during Sleeping (II) The Actual Conditions of Bedclimate in Spring - (온돌환경이 수면시의 생리반응엔 미치는 영향 -봄철 수면시 침실내 온열환경과 침상기후-)

  • The actual conditions of bedclimate are investigated depending on the regions and housing styles used on ondol in spring. Sixty healthy men and women (30 of them live in apartment and 30 of them live in detached house, 20 of them live in Wonju, 20 of them live in Cheongiu and 20 of them live in Pusan). The results are as follows: 1) The differences of bedclothes thickness between spring and autumn were not significant. weight of sleep-wear in spring was less than those in the autumn. 2) In the spring, the temperature and humidity of bedroom, floor, on/under the mattress, were lower and the temperature inside the sleep-wear was higher than those in the autumn. 3) The differences of the temperature and humidity of bedroom, the bed climate, and the clothing microclimate were significant by the regions and housing styles in spring. The temperature of bedroom and inside sleep-wear, the humidity of bedroom and inside sleep- wear in the apartment were higher than those in the detached house. 4) The differences of comfort sensation on the bedroom conditions was significant by the regions, and the differences of thermal sensation was significant by the housing styles. Most subjects perceived warm and dry but comfortable.

  • Modern apartment houses are constructed to be relatively airtight with a high heat insulation system to increase the energy efficiency. Such a system has a range of deleterious effects due to the insufficient ventilation. In this study, the ondol system, which is used as a heat source typical of winter in Korea, was set as the default system to evaluate the indoor heat environment according to the ventilation method, the factors of energy reduction by the ventilation system was analyzed. The experimental apparatus was used to simulate the ambient conditions for a certain constant temperature and humidity chamber. The experimental results showed that the supply water temperature higher air volume decreases with increasing supply air temperature in the following order: floor supply/exhaust > total heat exchange supply/exhaust > forced supply/exhaust. Through this study, the applicability of various ventilations could be examined.

Sixty healthy men and women (30 of them live in apartmrnt and 30 of them live in detached house, 20 of them live in Wonju, 20 of them live in Wonju, 20 of them live in Cheongju and 20 of them live in Pusan) The results are as follows: 1) No significant differences was shown between the seasons of bedclothes thickness. 2) In the autumn, the temperature and humidity of bedroom, on the mattress, inside the bedquilt, and inside the sleep-wear were higher than those in the winter. The temperature of ondol floor and under the mattress in winter were higher than those in the autumn. 3) The differences of the temperature and humidity of bedroom, the bed climate, and the clothing microclimate were significant by the regions and housing styles in both seasons. In both seasons, the temperature of bedroom, on the mattress, inside sleep-wear in the apartment were higher than those in the detached house. 4) The differences of subjective sensation on the bedroom conditions were not significant by the sextons, the regions, and the housing styles. Most subjects perceived that the conditions of bedroom were somehow hot and dry, but comfortable.

A Study on the Comfort, Physiological Responses and Microclimate in Beding Pad (온돌에서의 욕의 쾌적성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of thickness of the sleeping pad on the physiological responses and the microclimate in the heating ondol room during sleeping time. The measuring points were skin temp., weight loss and body movement as physiological responses and the compression ratio, the temp. on/under the sleeping pad, the inside limp. of the sleeping quilts and subjective sence while 7 hours sleeping. Thickness of sleeping pads was 27.2 mm(A), 34.8 mm (B), 47.9 mm(C) used for 90 days and no used pad 60.7 mm(D). The floor surface temp. was keeping $29{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ while the environmental conditions was at $23{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ ($50{\pm}5\%$ R.H.) The results were as followings; 1) The mean compression ratio after using the sleeping pads for 45 days was about $70\%$ , and it wasn't increased any more thereafter 2) After 2 hours sleeping the temp. under the sleeping pads was shown that C and D were higher than A and B, and the temp. on the sleeping pads was shown that A and C pads were higher than B and D. But after 3-4 hours sleeping the skin temp. of legs was shown that B and D pads were higher than A and C. 3) Weight loss for C pad was significantly higher than others. Body movement and side position in tying was higher in A and C pads than B and D. 4) The inside temp. of quilt for A and C pads were higher in the early part of sleeping period than those of B and C pads and relative humidity was lower in C than others. 5) D pad was softer than others and fatigue degree was turned out to be lowest in D, the highest in A. From this point of view, we concluded that thickness of the sleeping Pad in the heating ondol room had different characteristic from that in no heating ondol room. And 35 mm used pad was turned out to be proper.

  • The dominant heating system used in Korean residential apartment buildings is a hydronic radiant floor heating system, known as the Ondol system. The most common control strategy applied to this traditional hydronic radiant system is a simple on-off control that intermittently supplies "hot water of a fixed temperature" at a "constant flow rate" to each room. However, the current problems with the aforementioned control are as follows: (1) since the simple on-off control is usually based on a one point measured temperature (a signal from a thermostat installed in a living room) in each dwelling unit, heating energy use for unoccupied rooms as well as a difference in temperatures between spaces (master bedroom, living room, bedroom1, bedroom2) can occur occasionally. (2) the most widely used residential water splitter has static valves, and is thus not able to change the flow rate to each room depending on the space heating load. In other words, the ratio of flow rates to rooms is fixed after construction, resulting in over- or under-heating and an improper use of energy. The aim of this paper is therefore to investigate the differences in the system's performance between control strategies in terms of the flow rate control and sensor location. It is shown that energy savings of control strategies are strongly influenced by occupant schedule.

A Case Study on the Plumbing Pipe Burst of Floor Radiant Heating (바닥 복사난방 배관설비에서 배관파열 사례 연구)

  • Heating pipes burst was occurred in the apartment complex that was applied floor radiant heating system. There were two opinions for the cause of the bursted heating pipes that was the flaw during construction and defects in the product and also there were conflicting among them. Officials analyzed it in order to investigate the cause of the rupture. Tensile test results showed different tensile strength between the lower part of heating pipe and the upper part of heating pipes. The lower tensile strength is maintained while the top was not secured. The reason why rupture heating pipes is that flow velocity isn't secured and then the air get stagnant. Stagnant air makes hardening. It is caused rupturing. The proper flow rate was confirmed 0.166 m/sec after experiment. It isn't make stagnant air inside heating pipes.
