Jeju-do is a volcanic island located off the shore of the Korean peninsula facing the Pacific Ocean. The traditional housing styles of the Jeju Province, therefore, reflect the impact of these natural backgrounds and reveal different housing styles that are distinctive from those of mainland Korea. The purpose of this research is to analyze the peculiarities of the Ondol (floor heating system) and the kitchen space of traditional housing of Jeju Island in terms of lifestyles. This study shall employ two research methods: a literature review and field survey methods. The literature review shall focus on the observations of characteristics noted in previous studies of Jeju's private houses. The field survey shall employ field survey and interview methods originating from the ethnography of the culturological-anthropologist approach. (1) The Jeju-do Ondol system is a “Weibang-eudul” system which means one Gudul per fire hole. (2) The definition of terms for Gulmook show variations depending on the various regions on Jeiu-do. (3) Major facilities in Jeongji include Gulmook, Sotduck, and Busup. Gulmook is a heating facility and Sotduck refers to a cooking facility; Busup refers to a combination of heating, cooking, and illuminating facilities.
The objective of this study is to demonstrate the potential of radiant cooling systems using Ondol as an alternative cooling system in residential buildings. For this purpose, computer simulation and model experiments have been performed for the system performance analysis regarding comfort, floor surface condensation, and supply water temperature. The results of this study is the following: In radiant floor cooling system, room air temperatures were maintained within the set temperature range of $\pm$1$^{\circ}C$ without any discomfort condition. And taking into account only the condensation occurrence, it was possible to achieve radiant floor cooling for a period of about 77% of the total cooling period in weather condition of Seoul. The minimum supply water temperature is about 15$^{\circ}C$, so renewable energy system such as ground heat exchange system can be used as an alternative in cooling source. Also, floor surface condensation can be prevented by integrating with the dehumidification system.
The ondol is a uniquely Korean system of providing warmth to room. The ondol rooms never use daily life furniture because the ondol warms the floor surface where people sit. Finally, the ondol floor changed the traditional housings inner space. Before use ondol where daily life furnitures[sang(상) and Tap(탑)] are installed in the room. The origin of daily life furnitures are the ancient tomb mural of Koguryo Period. The daily life furniture can be classified as three large groups in the ancient tomb mural of Koguryo. First, a single seat[Jowa-sang(좌상)] of set up a screen[병풍]. The second, It make possible Many peoples take a seat with no decoration seat[Tap(탑)]. The third, uptodately table and chairs. A radical difference between sang(상) and Tap(탑) whether set up a screen[병풍]. The meaning of sang(상) and Tap(탑) in Koguryo ancient tomb provided Oksa-jo[옥사조] in Samkuk-sagi[삼국사기] with several valuable leads to help solve the sang(상)'s meaning. Furthermore, It will be start ponit of study on constructive shape of inner space in those days.
This study has been conducted to evaluate the applicability of the control method in the dehumidification-integrated radiant floor cooling system in terms of stability of the room air temperature and the control variables through experiments. To do this, the relationship between the control variables in preventing floor surface condensation is first analyzed and the control method is predetermined through simulations. The results are as follows. First, it is necessary to determine the operation status of the dehumidification system according to the relationship between floor surface temperature and dew point temperature in the conditioned space. Second, outdoor reset with indoor temperature feedback control is better than on/off bang-bang control with respect to temperature stability in controlling the room air temperature and the possibility of energy savings. Finally, the humidity sensor can be located with the current thermostat in that there are small differences in absolute humidity in vertical distribution.
The bureaucrat-scholars, ruling class of the Choseon Dynasty, used to build small private pavilions for rest and study for themselves. In the early period of the Dynasty, the pavilions had plain shapes with rectangular plan and simple wooden structure without any walls so as to enjoy the surrounding scenery. From the 16th century, the building form began to change into some diverse one by putting in an ondol room, an unique floor heating equipment. The pavilions also began to show regional differences by placing the ondol rooms in the floor. Myonang-jong, a pavilion occupied by a famous bureaucrat-scholar Song Soon, was built at Damyang of the southwest part of the Korean peninsula, so called Honam area, in 1533. At first, the building form followed the ordinary early pavilion shape using simple wooden structure and wooden floor. But when it was rebuilt in 1654 after burning down by war, there happened some changes. An ondol room was put in the center of the floor, of which regarded as a dominant regional characteristic of the Honam area. The change of the building form of Myonang-jong showed that it was the 17th century Honam area got the regional characteristic in the architecture of pavilion.
The purpose of this study was to find out the physical change of the farm house and its anbang(the main room : master bed room), to identify the behavioral changes : activity and awareness of anbang, and to clarify the relationship between the physical changes of the farm house, and the behavioral changes of housing life-style in the anbang space. Bibliographical studies, cultural approaches and field survey method with questionnaire were used to collect data from 55 residents of Anwhari and Yangkyori in Pyong Teck Koon. Tables and drawings were made to analyze the data. The major findings were 1) the heating system of the ondol anbang. The most popular type is the double heating system(new pipes added to the traditional ondol). This combination ondol system brought some conviniences to the farmers. This change in structure of the ondol were of four types : Complete change in style, enlarged-completely changed style, partially changed style, enlarged-partially changed style. 2) from 1960 through 1970 lighting of the anbang changed room oil lamp to electricity. 3) the finishing material of the anbang floor changed from traditional oil paper and straw mats to vinyl flooring. 4) Traditional furniture and small decor items are gradually disappearing and are being replaced by modern items. 5) The awareness and actual use of the ondol anbang has not much changed from the multi-functional and sacred space of daily living : which are the characteristics of Korean traditional ondol anbang. The biggest consistency in the ondol anbang is the heating system of the floor, which is the characteristic of ondol culture in Korea. This system will continue regardless of time and place in Korea.
Ondol heating, a kind of radiant floor heating, is a main method used in housing units in Korea. Building energy simulation including ondol and relevant facilities has not been performed due to its complexity. For evaluating energy consumption and indoor temperature variation, a new method should be proposed. At the present work, a dynamic simulation on ondol heating was tried by combining TRNSYS and EES. Characteristic functions for a pump, hot water coils and a gas boiler were simultaneously solved by EES, and calculated flow rates and supply temperature of hot water were provided as inputs of the active layer of TYPE 56 in TRNSYS. The results by the simulation on a typical housing unit in Korea shows a good trend in a viewpoint of actual behavior of ondol heating.
Most Korean houses are heated by the Ondol heating system. There has been, however, no reasonable design procedure availabe yet for the system. The conventional design should be improved to have auniform floor surface. temperature distribution and to have a high thermal efficiency. Thermal efficiencies of the ondol were defined and the method of experimentation was studied. An experiment, using a life-size model which was well insulated, was performed to observe the variation in thermal efficiency as the length of fuel burning time was varied.
This paper is to present the performance data for pressure setting method using some tile bonds for application on the Ondol-Heating floor system. For this purpose, powder and liquid tile bonds(Organic.Inorganic mixed tile bonds) were compared with the conventional tile cement for pressure setting method in the sight of the adhesive stability of porcelain tile. It tested for tiles after 14, 28days under standard condition and severe conditions. The severe conditions were water immersion and heat ageing($70^{\circ}C$). Another experimental factors concerned tile bond properties such as mixing ratio(in case of using liquid admixture), open time, which are supposed to affect the tensile strength of tile, were studied and discussed through the experiments.
Adjacent housing units suffer inevitable thermal losses if an unheated unit exists in an apartment building. Thermal loss of the units adjoining the unheated apartment can be neglected because the contact area is small and insulators are located in the walls. When insulators are not included in the slab between the upper and lower units, 70% of the heat supplied by an Ondol system may be used in the original unit, but 30% is transferred to the unit on the lower floor. Another 30% can be obtained from the ceiling if the upper floor housing unit is heated. This strong thermal connection is a characteristic of Ondol heating in apartment buildings. When there is an unheated unit, the lower floor unit uses 42.3% more heating energy if there is no insulation and 19.5% if a 35 mm insulator is used as in the current guidelines. Therefore, much thicker insulation should be applied to weaken the thermal connection.
