  • The ondemand governor used in android-based smartphone platforms is a CPU frequency scaling technique. The ondemand governor sets the CPU operating frequency depending on the CPU utilization rate. Job scheduling affects the CPU utilization rate. The power consumption is proportional to the value of operating frequency. Consequently, CPU frequency scaling and CPU utilization rate have an effect on power consumption in a smartphone. In this paper, we evaluated the performance of job scheduling techniques incorporating the ondemand governor in terms of CPU utilization, power consumption, and job deadline miss ratio.

Hybrid Governor for Wearable OS Using H/W Low-power Features (하드웨어 저전력 기능을 활용한 웨어러블 운영체제의 하이브리드 가버너)

  • Wearable devices have become widespread. Fitness band is one of common wearable devices, providing useful functions. It helps users to monitor and collect their status such as heart rate and travel distance. Wearable devices, including fitness bands, are designed in small size and it ends up having small battery capacity. In that regard, it is necessary to expand the lifetime of wearable devices. Conventional power management scheme of wearable devices is based on DVFS Ondemand Governor and peripheral control by timeout event, such as turning off the LCD. In this paper, we propose a hybrid governor applying hardware supporting low power mode such as sleep mode to exploit the periodicity of fitness band task. In addition, we show hybrid governor outperforms in power consumption than conventional power management scheme of wearable devices based on Ondemand Governor through experiments.

Performance Improvement of Application Programs using an Adaptive Sampling Method (가변 샘플링 기법을 이용한 프로그램 성능 개선)

  • Performance of the mobile devices, such as Smartphones, is sensible by the early-stage of the execution of the applications. To addressing this issue, the dynamic frequency scaling by the ondemand governor has an inherent weakness by the sampling period that may induces some delay in the execution time of the applications. In this paper, we propose an adaptive sampling method that varying the sampling period of the ondemand governor in accordance with the execution of the applications. By the experiment result, the proposed method outperforms 3.34% in early-stage of the execution time that impacts the sensible performance, and exhibits negligible differences in terms of the energy consumption.

  • The popularity of augmented reality (AR) applications and games are in high demand. Currently, the best common platform to implement AR services is on a smartphone, as online games, navigators, personal assistants, travel guides are among the most popular applications of smartphones. However, the power consumption of an AR application is extremely high, and therefore, highly adaptable and dynamic low power control schemes must be used. Dynamic voltage and frequency scaling (DVFS) schemes are widely used in smartphones to minimize the energy consumption by controlling the device's operational frequency and voltage. DVFS schemes can sometimes lead to longer response times, which can result in a significant problem for AR applications. In this paper, an AR response time monitor is used to observe the time interval between the AR image input and device's reaction time, in order to enable improved operational frequency and AR application process priority control. Based on the proposed response time monitor and the characteristics of the Linux kernel's completely fair scheduler (CFS) (which is the default scheduler of Android based smartphones), a response time step control (RSC) scheme is proposed which adaptively adjusts the CPU frequency and interactive application's priority. The experimental results show that RSC can reduce the energy consumption up to 10.41% compared to the ondemand governor while reliably satisfying the response time performance limit of interactive applications on a smartphone.

  • as the smartphone industry developed, the smartphone's internal hardware devices have become high-end devices and it requires more power consumption than the previous one. therefore a battery of high capacity needed, but there is a limit in order to equip a large battery on account of smartphone minimization. The Linux Kernel provides the DVFS Mechanism to compensate for these limitations by software techniques. DVFS is dynamically adjust the frequency of the CPU to reduce the power consumption of the CPU. ondemand governor, the default policy in DVFS, apply the maximum frequency of the CPU whenever exceeding the up_threshold. so it result in a waste of CPU resources. by paying attention to this point, this paper propose the mechanism that maintain a high CPU utilization in proportion to the current frequency of the cpu to prevent the waste of CPU resources and conserve energy.
