Failure of spot-weld joints in car body may cause noise, vibration and safety problems. Systematic procedures for estimating fatigue strength of general spot-weld joints are developed in this paper. Fatigue test results for various spot-welded specimens are analysed using the finite element method. It is found that the maximum principal strain at the nugget boundary on the inner surface governs the fatigue failure of spot-welded joints.
In the study, the fatigue strength improvement and mechanism have been estimated by the Spot-Heating treatment on welded bead toes. For this, web-gusset specimens were made without residual stresses and the others with residual stresses imposed by Spot-Heating. The 4-point bending tests were performed in order to estimate the effect of spot-heating on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue test, fatigue strength of As-Welded specimen for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending has satisfied the grade of fatigue prescribed in specifications of korea, AASHTO and JSSC. As compare with As-Welded specimen and Spot-Heating specimen have increased about 20% for the fatigue strength at $7.7{\times}10^6$ cycles. The Spot-Heating by reformation of the residual stress on welded bead toes has greatly affected the fatigue crack propagation life, but has slightly affected the fatigue crack initiation life.

Cold-rolled carbon steel sheets are commonly used in railroad car or commercial vehicles such as the automobile. These are mainly fabricated by spot welding which is a kind of electric resistance welding. But fatigue strength of spot welding joint is lower than that of base metal due to high stress concentration at nugget edge of the spot welded part. And fatigue strength of them is especially influenced by not only geometrical and mechanical factors but also welding conditions of the spot welded joint. So for fatigue design of gas welded joints such as TS-type joints, it is necessary to obtain design information on stress distribution at the weldment as well as fatigue strength of spot welded joints. And also, the influence of the geometrical parameters of spot welded joints on stress distribution and fatigue strength must be evaluated. And analysis approach for fatigue test using design of experiment are evaluated optimum factor in TS-type welded joint and geometrical parameters of materials. Using these results, that factors applied to fundamental information for automation of fatigue design.

Having found by means of a tension-shear test an optimal spot welding condition under which the maximum weld strength is to be brought forth, this study made an examination of behavior of fracture concerned with behavior of stress distribution, observed around the nugget periphery of the specimens prepared under the optimal conditions, with one point spot welded mild steel sheets. The resultant findings are as follows: (1)There remarkably exists an optimal spot welding condition to indicate the maximum weld strength, and fracture of the specimens spot welded under that condition occurs outside the nugget boundary. (2)An experiment on the basis of a photoelastic model reveals that the maximum stress is distributed along the center line of the steel plate width but occurs on the region corresponding to heat affected zone of spot welds. (3)Heat affected zone of spot welds consists of coarse grains with considerably low micro Vickers hardness value and of fine grains of high micro Vickers hardness value, and in this unbalanced structure weak region are represented in coarse grain region, where fracture is initiated and continues its propagation.
One of the recent issues in design of the spot-welded structure such as the automobile body is to develop an economical prediction method of the fatigue design criterion without additional fatigue test. In this paper, as one of basic investigation for developing such methods, fracture mechanical approach was investigated. First, the Model I, Mode II and Mode III, stress intensity factors were analyzed. Second, strain energy density factor (S) synthetically including them was calculated. And finally, in order to decide the systematic fatigue design criterion by using this strain energy density factor, fatigue data of the ΔP-N(sub)f obtained on the various in-plane bending type spot-welded lap joints were systematically re-arranged in the ΔS-N(sub)f relation. And its utility and reliability were verified by the theory of Weibull probability distribution function. The reliability of the proposed fatigue life prediction value at 10(sup)7 cycles by the strain energy density factor was estimated by 85%. Therefore, it is possible to decide the fatigue design criterion of spot-welded lap joint instead of the ΔP-N(sub)f relation.

According to weight lightning trend of automobile body, necessity of resistance spot welding (RSW) of Mg alloy on automobile industry is increasing rapidly because of the highest specific strength among commercial metals. Mg alloy has low electric resistance and high thermal conductivity like as Al alloy, so that needs applying high current in short time when welding. Thick oxide film of Mg alloy pollutes the electrodes and makes partial current carrying paths when on welding. Partial current carrying paths signify excessive concentration of current. There can initiate expulsion easily and reduces electrode life rapidly. Generating partial current carrying paths and expulsions are influenced by shapes of electrode. Therefore, electrode life also influenced by shape. In this study, we perform life test of RSW electrode of radius type. Measure tensile shear load and nugget size every spot alternately. As a result, radius type electrode can extend life over twice as dome type electrode.

A spot welded structures have an influence on a diverse climatic situation, for instance temperature, humidity and precipitation. In addition factors of environmental pollution such as acid rain, that courses corrosion, have the tendency to increase. But spot welded structures strength is affected by humidity and environment temperature. Therefore, it is important to evaluate effect of temperature and water immersion on strength properties of spot welded part. In this study, the strength distribution of spot welded plates is evaluated the environmental temperature of zinc coated steel plates. Test is conducted with welded part immersed in distilled and synthetic sea water. Specimens are immersed into water for 10, 100, 500 and 1000 hours to evaluate the offsets of water immersion time on tensile-shear strength under the conditions of -40, 0, 20 and 5$0^{\circ}C$. From this result, spot welded specimens with 5 mm clearance have lower tensile-shear strength in the distilled water or synthetic sea water than without clearance. And they have lower tensile-shear strength under -4$0^{\circ}C$ and over 5$0^{\circ}C$.
Resistance spot weldability of coated steels for automobile applications was investigated. Test samples were prepared from commercial products of 0.8 mm in thickness. Based on the tensile-shear test, surface quality examination and cracking behavior, it was clear that aluminized steels showed good weldability. Microstructural inspection revealed that the coated materials was piled up at the split zone in the welding of aluminized steels. It was also demonstrated that no weld crack was found in the aluminized steel weld metal even the welding was carried out with higher current. However, through thickness cracks were detected at the weld metal of zinc coated steel. Small particles were found on the crack surface of zinc coated steel weld metal. It was thought that zinc vapor played key role to form the weld crack.
This study examines the interactions between KTB spot and futures markets using the daily prices from March 4, 2002 to January 31, 2005. We use Granger causality test, impulse Response Analysis and Variance Decomposition through vector autoregressive analysis (VAR). However, considering the long-term relationships between the level variables of KTB spot and futures, we introduced Vector Error Correction Model. The main results are as follows. According to the results of Granger-causality test and impulse response analysis, we find that the yields of KTB forward have a great influence on the change of KTB spot but not vice versa. In terms of volatility analysis, there is no inter-dependence between KTB forward and spot markets. In the variance decomposition analysis we find that the short-term KTB forward has much more impact on the KTB spot market than the long-term KTB forward does. We think these results are meaningful for bond investors who are in charge of capital asset pricing valuation, risk management and international portfolio management.
Spot welding has wide used with a high work efficiency in the automotive and aerospace industries. Up to the present, the technique mainly used to test spot welds on production lines has been entirely depended upon destructive chisel or peel testing. Therefore, it's being very important assignment to secure the NDE technique which can be evaluate spot weld quality with more efficiency and high reliability. This paper discusses the feasibility of UNDE techniques to evaluate spot weld quality. For the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of a the corona bond from nugget, ultrasonic c-scan image and distribution of reflective echo amplitude was measured by immersion method with the mechanical and the electronic scanning of point-focussed ultrasonic beam(25 MHz). As the results of this study, corona bond which is the most dangerous types of interface defects can be successfully detected, as well as expulsion and voids. Ultrasonic testing results were confirmed and compared by optical microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section. The results show that the nugget diameter can be successfully measured with the accuracy of 0.8 mm.
