  • The most portion of the Korean Army's ammunition management system has achieved efficiency and automation based on the Ammunition Information System (AIS). However, a few limitations for the automation system constructed at each site, exist in verifying the real time situation. At the present state of technology, the asset visibility of the located ammunitions is basically achieved. On the other hand, the ammunitions in the middle of transportation are difficult to achieve asset visibility. The RFID(Radio Frequency Identification) technology could be an appropriate solution in these circumstances. Therefore, the objective of this paper is to apply the RFID to improve defense asset management, total asset visibility and ammunition distribution efficiency in the ammunition management system of the Korean Army.

  • Forest Canopy Density is a dynamic process mediated by various natural and anthropogenic factors. It can be changed over time and locations in the same forest type and landscape. However, human dimensions are considered as the primary force of landscape change and subsequent forest canopy loss in tropical regions of the world. Many studies have been indicated that roads have a far greater impact on forests than simply allowing access for human use. Similarly, rivers have been used as means of transportation, hence illegal logging and felling further deplete forest canopy density. The main objective of this study was to investigate the spatio-temporal dynamic alterations of Forest Canopy Density (FCD) across with site associated factors such as biophysical, physical and human interferences in tropical region of Nepal from 1988 to 2001. Landsat TM and ETM+ of 1988 and 2001 were used to assess the spatial and temporal dynamic alterations of FCD. This analysis revealed that distance to human settlements at P=<0.01, rivers, human interferences (path and fire) and species composition had a statistically significance at P=<0.05 level. However, other factors did not show any significant relation. So, we concluded that understanding of dynamic alterations of FCD with respect to factors was quite complex phenomena. Other surrounding environment could also playa significant role. A comprehensive analysis could be required to understand such complexities. Therefore, additional factors such as climatic, biophysical, social, and institutional with respect to spatio-temporal variability should be considered for the better understanding of canopy dynamic.

  • In a nonlinear site response analysis which is performed in time domain, small strain damping is modeled as viscous damping through use of various forms of Rayleigh damping formulations. Small strain damping of soil is known to be independent of the loading frequency, but the viscous damping is greatly influenced by the loading frequency. The type of Rayleigh damping formulation has a pronounced influence on the dependence. This paper performs a series of nonlinear analyses to evaluate the degree of influence of the viscous damping formulation on Korean soil profiles. Analyses highlight the strong influence of the viscous damping formulation for soil profiles exceeding 30 m in thickness, commonly used in simplified Rayleigh damping formulation overestimating energy dissipation at high frequencies due to artificially introduced damping. When using the full Rayleigh damping formulation and carefully selecting the optimum modes, the artificial damping is greatly reduced. Results are further compared to equivalent linear analyses. The equivalent linear analyses can overestimate the peak ground acceleration even for shallow profiles less than 20 m in thickness.

  • The interior portion of Gerber's beam are constructed with post-tensioned segmental composite beams in this study. A precast concrete member which is larger than the limits of domestic transportation regulation in weight, length, and volume is divided into three parts, transported separately, and erected with a composite member by post-tensioning in site. Static flexural loading tests are performed on Gerber's type frames which are consisted with 2.5m overhangs and 5m interior beams composited from three pieces. The connection of overhang to interior composite beam and beam to beam, and flexural performance of interior portion of Gerber's beam are examined thoroughly. All of the tests are ended with a compression failure of the interior composite beams over the design strength of homogeneous beams. The brittle connection failures or tensile failures with the failure of lower strand was not observed in any test frames.

  • Applying previous studies performed in the moisture transportation characteristics and shrinkage of lightweight concrete application of shrinkage reduction is to discuss. Applicability of shrinkage reduction effect of lightweight concrete applies for the analysis of PSC girder bridge beam placed on the construction site. Stress of the concrete bridge deck, rebar quantity is calculated by effective elastic modulus method and crack risk is assessed by moisture transport and differential shrinkage analysis. After approximately 10 days maximum tensile stress occurs 6MPa, similar to the case of normal concrete, a maximum tensile stress occurs 3MPa in lightweight concrete and comparing to normal concrete stress was reduced to approximately 50%. Normal and lightweight concrete crack index, respectively, is reduced 1.6 to 1.2, 1.2 to 0.9 in surface and boundary region. Therefore, reduction in shrinkage of concrete were able to confirm reduction of crack risk.

  • Recently, by the lack of fill material, the dredg and fill(hydraulic fill) method is commonly used in reclamation projects. Hydraulic fill method dredges the soil and send it with water through the transportation pipe to the site. The intial state of the hydraulic fill material is accordingly the mixture of water and soil skeleton which settles with time forming a new soil layer. The properties of new soil layer is governed the size of the soil skeleton, the flow velocity of mixing water, salt concentration, the distance from the discharge pipe outlet, and other dredging conditions when settling process occur. In this study, the effects of gradation of derdged soil on the deposition properties (with emphasis on the optimum spacing of the discharge pipes) was investigated by field test. It was found that the soft fine graind soil was forme at 350m from the discharge pipe outlet when the dredged material was classified as CL, while the soft fine grained soil was not formed even at the distance farther than 400m from the diacharge pipe outlet when the dredged material was classified as SM.

  • Urban transits of metropolises have been used by many citizens due to the merits of environment friendly traffic, mass transportation, safety and scheduled operation. It is very important to keep safety for the increased passengers. When the accidents as like fire occur, rapid evacuation from fire site is one of the most effective methods to decrease casualties. Furthermore, overseas buyers sometimes request the verification results of the passenger evacuation from rolling stock. In this study, algorithm for passenger flow analysis based on DEM(Discrete Element Method) is newly developed and made simulation program package. And, we applied it to the evacuation problem for urban transits. By using the developed program, we compared the simulation results of the effects of the location and size of door and elapsed time qualitatively and quantitatively.
