Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) drives a large variety of research, development, and new type of markets. All type of devices and sensors will be part of the Internet of Things and will be able to communicate not only plain data, but also audio-visual, olfactory, and haptic media data. In addition, as the devices and sensors getting smarter, it is highly probable that they can process acquired media and metadata to extract higher level of information (e.g., semantics). To support such enhanced functionalities, ISO/IEC SC29 WG11 (MPEG) starts a new standard project, ISO/IEC 23093, called Internet of Media Things (IoMT) to provide standard data formats and APIs for media things. This paper presents the standardization activities of IoMT focusing on explaining terms, standard scopes, and major media things with their use cases. One of the use cases, an IoT system for a blind pedestrian navigation assistance, is evaluated to prove its effectiveness.
Technologies for video reality (e.g., 3D displays, vibration, surround sound, etc.) utilize various sensory input and many of them are now commercialized. However, when it comes to the use of olfaction for video reality, there has not been much progress in both practical and academic respects. Because olfactory sense is tightly associated with human emotion, proper use of this sense is expected to help to achieve a high degree of video reality. This research tested the effects of a video's color-temperature related scent on reality improvement when the video does not have apparent object (e.g., coffee, flower, etc.) which suggest specific smell. To this end, we had participants to rate 48 scents based on a color-temperature scale of 1,500K (warm)-15,000K (cold) and chose 8 scents (4 warm scents, 4 cold scents) which showed clear correspondence with warm or cold color-temperatures (Expt. 1). And then after applying warm (3,000K), neutral (6,500K), or cold (14,000K) color-temperatures to images or videos, we presented warm or cold scents to participants while they rate reality improvement on a 7-point scale depending on relatedness of scent vs. color-temperature (related, unrelated, neutral) (Expts. 2-3). The results showed that participants experienced greater reality when scent and color-temperature was related than when they were unrelated or neutral. This research has important practical implications in demonstrating the possibility that provision of color-temperature related scent improves video reality even when there are no concrete objects that suggest specific olfactory information.
This study was based on previous ones that demonstrate how social exclusion leads to a desire for physical warmth. Research was conducted using odor-induced emotions to predict social exclusion, leading to a pursuit of emotional warmth and avoidance of emotional distance. For this purpose, a preliminary study sought to select odors perceived to be emotionally warm and emotionally distant, after which two experiments verified differences in odor preference between the social exclusion group and the control group. Results indicated that individuals who have experienced social exclusion had a stronger preference for warm odors and a weaker preference for cold odors compared to those who have not been socially ostracized. This study has theoretical value in terms of expanding the social exclusion-induced desire for physical warmth into the emotional dimension as well as examining the avoidance of emotional coldness, which had been overlooked in previous research studies. This also leads to practical implications for comfort foods, character emotions, emotional-space design, and emotions for artificial-intelligence chatbots.
This article addresses the possibility of developing a new art appreciation method using olfaction, which was not previously considered an important sense in expanding the cultural enjoyment of visually impaired people. The human olfactory system is a faculty that is not considered very important in modern society; however, this is due to cultural factors, and from a biological point of view, the human sense of smell has sufficient potential for practical application. In this study, it is assumed that when various types of scent are perceived through this sense of smell, each has its own unconscious relation to color and concept, which researchers have termed "color directivity" and "concept directivity." Through experiments, the researchers found that some specific scents have color directivity and concept directivity, and in using these scents, they succeeded in delivering information about colors used in artworks to the visually impaired. Based on this study, we hope to continue our research on the use of color-concept directional scents that can convey the brightness and saturation of colors and more diverse hues.

In order for us human to possess realistic spatial sense in the world of virtual reality, it is imperative that a research as our sensory organs should be through dine. Up until now, visual, tactile sense and a put of olfactory are getting by. We develope a rest of sense for improving visual reality with dynamic resolution control and increasing interactivity with introducing curator.

본 연구에서는 단순노무직, 판매직, 전문직에 종사하는 피험자를 대상으로 100%의 basil oil, lavender oil, lemon oil, jasmine oil, ylang-ylang oil (KIMEX co. Ltd, Korea), skatole (TAKASAGO co.

In this paper, we suggest method that change odors to digital data. For this, we selected emotional adjective of odors as olfactory receptor This emotional adjective(expressional receptor) is about 40. Each odors are expressed by adjective equivalent to oneself. Expressed odors as emotional receptor is encoded as proposed method for transmission, and after transmission, It should be decoded for expression again. The applied decoding method is fuzzy c-means clustering algorithm(FCMA). But, because odor data is expressed to 40 dimensions, FCMA uses a lot of computing times and memories. To solve this problem, after we reduce dimension through principal component analysis(PCA), we use FCMA algorithm.
When consumer evaluates a product, every aspec of the product affects the evaluation. Human uses at least five sensory organs for the evaluation. Multi-sensory or multi-modal design tries to add auditory and olfactory factors to the traditional visual-centered design. For the multi-modal design, it is essential to understand relationships between combined sensory stimuli and human sensibility. Information between simple sensory stimulus and human sensibility is pre-requisite to combine multi-modal stimuli. This study investigated human sensibility against 8 colors and 30 sounds, presented independently. The combined stimuli of color and sound were made based on the sensibility generated by each stimulus. Human sensibility generated by the combined stimuli of color and sound were made based on the sensibility generated by each stimulus. Human sensibility generated by the combined stimuli was investigated with 20 female subjects. For combined stimuli that generated the same kind of sensibility respectively, generated sensibility was same but strength was diminished. For combined stimuli that generated the different sensibilities respectively, subjects showed neutral sensibility or no special sensibilities. Sensibilities to the same stimuli also showed difference depending on personal background of the subjects.

The human sensibility product design requires information on consumer's emotions such as vision, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, or tactile perceptions. In this study, tactile sense which has not been well studied compared to other senses, is measured and statistically analysed. The emotional responses of 37 pairs of positive and negative adjectives describing tactile senses are collected and analysed through the questionnaire to find the correlation between adjectives and surface roughness of the sample. Mean ranks for 37 pairs of adjectives on four samples are obtained, and used to cluster these adjectives by factor analysis, multidimensional scaling, or cluster analysis.
