  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of strength exercise program(60 minutes/day, 3 times/week) on health-related fitness and the factor of metabolic syndrome in the older at senior care facilities during 12 weeks. Twenty-seven volunteers were recruited for the study and divided into two groups: 15 persons(82.6yrs) undertook a continuous 12 weeks strength exercise program(EG), and 12 persons(78.9yrs) served as a control group(CG). The data process of this study calculated as mean(M) and standard Deviation(SD) of all measured value, used repeated measure ANOVA, and paired t-test. The significant level of hypothesis verification is set-up as α=.05. After 12 weeks in EG, health-related fitness increased by an average of 15.2% for right grip strength(p<.05), 26.9% for left grip strength(p<.05), 32.7% for chair stand(p<.05), 92.5% for one leg stand(p<.05), 29.6% for sit and reach(p<.05), and 34.5% for TUG(p<.05); CG showed no difference between pre and post. In the factor of metabolic syndrome, Systolic BP(3.1mmHg) and fasting blood glucose(7.4mg/dl) decreased in the EG group(p<.05). In summary, the strength exercise program leads to a genuine increase in health-related fitness and decrease in the factor of metabolic syndrome in the older adults. The well planned strength exercise seems to be an important intervention to improve function fitness in this population.

  • Korean Government had performed three pilot programs to introduce the long term care insurance system. Persons aged 65 or older who are dependent on others for daily living could use long term care services in the pilot program. The long-term care insurance covered nursing home services, home care services and cash benefits. The cash benefits are included that for elderly at home and for patients in geriatric hospital. This study investigated whether there had been any change in the medical care utilization according to cash benefits for geriatric hospitalization. This study used National Health Insurance claims and Long term Care Insurance claims 2003 through 2006. Data were composed of subjects who undertook both insurance coverage. The subjects was divided into two groups. Case group included participants with the cash benefits of geriatric hospitalization. Control group included persons without the cash benefits selected by random sampling according to the distribution of case group. This study showed that the amount of medical care utilization of the case group is more significantly increased than the control group after adjusted their health condition and functional condition. This result will be helpful for making decisions on whether the cash benefit of geriatric hospitalization can be introduced into long term care insurance system.

  • The purpose of this study was to assess the nutrition education program for older adults at rural area. Eighty three adults (mean age ;55.6$\pm$11.9) participated in nutrition education program. Data collection includes serum and urine collections for health state. The impact of nutrition KAP (knowledge attitude and practice) and retention was examined among participants who were assessed at program entry 3 times of education and 1 month of follow-up. The results were as follows : The participants were composed 52 persons of under 60-year-old and 31 persons over 60 years. Of the 83 participants, 60 were females and 23 were males. Serum albumin and calcium content of females (3.5$\pm$1.2g/dl, 7.5$\pm$3.9mg/dl) were significantly lower than males(4.7$\pm$0.9g/dl, 11.2$\pm$4.6mg/dl). Serum TG and cholesterol contents of females (143$\pm$117mg/d1, 205$\pm$31mg/d1) were higher than males (101$\pm$86mg/dl, 192$\pm$19mg/dl) but not significantly different. The calcium (13.4$\pm$9.0mg/dl) and urea (743$\pm$440mg/dl) contents of urine excretion were also significantly lower in female than in males (19.7$\pm$11mg/dl, 1041 $\pm$535mg/dl). Via the question of nutrition attitude, the participants improved significantly between pre and post education (the score of pre, post and after 1 month, 6.7$\pm$1.8, 7.2$\pm$1.5, 7.2$\pm$1.8), and were also attributed to better personal feeling health by modified CMI test but food habit was not significantly improved. As the differences of age and gender groups were compared, under 60-year-old group had better nutrition practice score than over 60 years group.

  • There have been a few studies reporting the epidemiology of moyamoya disease in Korea. Previous studies revealed relatively high prevalence and incidence of moyamoya disease in Korea and Japan. This study was designed to provide the latest epidemiologic information of moyamoya disease in Korea. We analyzed a database comprising of 50 million people covered in Korea by the National Health Insurance Service to calculate the prevalence. The incidence was estimated by eliminating the duplicated records of previous 3 years. We summarized the prevalence and incidence according to age, sex, and local distribution. In addition, the chronological changes were demonstrated with direct standardization using the 2010 population structure information. The standardized prevalence was 6.5 per 100000 persons in 2005, which was increased to 18.1 in 2013. In the same period, standardized incidence was increased from 2.7 to 4.3 per 100000 persons. The prevalence for men was 4.9 and 8.3 for women in 2005. In 2013, the prevalence had increased for men and women to 13.8 and 25.3, respectively. The incidence for men and women was 2.2 and 3.2, respectively, in 2005. It had increased to 3.5 and 5.7, respectively. The mean age of patients was 33.5 in 2005 and increased to 42.5 in 2013. The peak prevalent age group had shifted slightly to the older age groups, with chronologically consistent female predominance. The prevalence was highest in Jeollabuk province and lowest in Ulsan city.

  • Purpose: The use of video-recording offers important advantages in observing and assessing the relationship between specific behaviors in health care settings. The purpose of this systematic review is to investigate and synthesize the methodological characteristics of studies using video-technology for measuring interactions with the older persons with dementia and staff in long-term care facilities. Methods: We searched Medline, Embase and CINHAL databases for published articles in English using a video-recording method for both staff and the residents with dementia. Quantitative research design studies (e.g., descriptive or experimental studies) were included. Results: Among 5,605 searched papers, a total of 20 studies were selected for this review. Situations of video-recording were providing personal care (n=12), mealtime (n=6), and conversation (n=3). Concepts measured by video-recording were classified into two groups: 1) Staff [care practice by staff (n=13) and communication by staff (n=11)] and 2) residents [communication by resident (n=4), activities of daily life function of resident (n=8), and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (n=10)]. Conclusion: This review demonstrates that video technologies are actively used to evaluate the relationship between quality of care and health outcomes of the elderly with dementia in many international nursing studies. This study provides the foundation for a future research using video-recording technologies to examine the interactions and relationships between staff and the residents in Korean long-term care settings.

  • Objectives: To analyze the relationships of socioeconomic status(SES) to health status and health behaviors in the elderly. Methods: Data were obtained from self-administered questionnaire of 4,587 persons, older than 65 years, living in a community. We measured the sociodemographic characteristics, socioeconomic status, health status (subjective health status, acute disease, admission experience, dental state, chronic disease etc.), activities of daily living (ADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), and mini-mental state examination-Korean (MMSEK). Binary and multinominal logistic regression analyses were employed to analyze factors affecting on the socioeconomic status of the elderly. Results: With regard to the SES and health status, those with a low SES had poorer subjective health states and lower satisfaction about their physical health. Also, acute disease experiences, admission rates and tooth deciduation rates were higher in those of low SES. In the view of physical and cognitive functions, the ADL, IADL and MMSE-K scores were also lower in those of low SES. However, with regard to health behaviors, lower smoking and alcohol drinking rates were found in the low SES group, and a similar trend was shown with regular physical exercise, eating breakfast, and regular physical health check-up. From these findings, we surmise that those with low SES have a poorer health condition and less money to spend on health, therefore, they can not smoke or drink alcohol, exercise and or have a physical health check-up. Conclusion: This study suggests that socioeconomic status plays an important role in health behaviors and status of the elderly. Low socioeconomic status bring about unhealthy behavior and poor health status in the elderly. Therefore, more specific target oriented(esp. low SES persons) health promotion activities for the elderly are very important to improve not only their health status, but their health inequity also.

  • Osteoporosis is a major health problem in countries with aging populations, resulting in excess morbidity and mortality. This study was conducted to investigate knowledge and practices about osteoporosis in adults and to identify some factors which were influenced to that. 56-item questionnaire was developed including five domains(general characteristics, osteoporosis-related characteristics, knowledge of risk factors, knowledge of prevetion and practices). Subjects of this study were 368 adult ranged from 30 to 59. Data were collected during the period from June 15 to July 10, 1998 by means of a structured questionnare. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Post Hoc, Pearson Correlation by SPSSWIN program. The results were as follows: 1. The mean knowledge score of risk factors for osteoporosis was 7.46(full score=15) and that of prevention of osteoporosis was 8,79(full score=12). 2. The mean practice score of osteoporosis was slightly higher than median value. 3. Women had better knowledge about osteoporosis risk factors and practiced more osteoporosis-prevention measures than men. Although the data demonstrated fairly good general knowledge about osteoporosis in the subjects, the older group(age 50-59), those at the highest risk of developing the disease, knew less about osteoporosis than the younger group(age 30-39) did. 4. The persons who had heard about osteoporosis and bone mineral density though mass media medical pratitioners and who didn't take any medicine for osteoporosis had better knowledge about osteoporosis and preventive measures. The practice score was significantly higer in the postmenopausal women and persons who were already diagnosed as osteoporosis patients, or who underwent bone mineral density measurements. 5. The relation between knowledge and practice was significant. In conclusion, there was a modest degree of general knowledge about osteoporosis and its consequences in adults. Further randomized studies are needed to evaluate the relationship between osteoporosis and risk factors. However, these results support the importance of education to prevent osteoporosis.

  • Despite the ubiquity of mobile phone, the medium has received far less scholarly attention than it should deserve. This study begin with the purpose of fair repositioning of mobile phone in Korean interpersonal communication. To accomplish this purpose, We examined the effect of communication values on perception of mobile phone as interpersonal communication medium, such as the appropriateness and effectiveness of mobile phone. The related raw data were collected from on-line survey process, and statistically analyzed. The result showed that the more effect the traditional communication values of our society have on the perception of mobile phone, the older users are. And Younger generations tend to have more positive attitude to mobile phone as interpersonal communication medium. Particularly when the seniors are interpersonal communication partner and impending task is advice or request, younger persons tend to perceive mobile phone more appropriate and effective than the elder persons do. Thus, it is plausible to predict that relative position of mobile phone will be gradually more important in Koreans' social communication when the younger generation become the mainstream of our society.
