From August, 1978, to August, 1989, 22 patients underwent pericardiectomy for chronic constrictive pericarditis on the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, School of Medicine, Keimyung University. There were 14 male and 6 female patients ranging from 11 years to 70 years old[mean age, 44. 1 years]. All patients underwent radical pericardiectomy through a median sternotomy. There was 1 postoperative death[4.s%]. This patient died of low cardiac output 7 days after pericardiectomy. Postoperative complications were hemothorax[2 patients], low cardiac output[2 patients], generalized seizure[1 patient], wound infection[1 patient] and pneumonia[1 patient]. Clinical and pathological findings showed tuberculous origin in 12 patients[54.6%], unknown etiology in 8 patients[36.4%] pyogenic pericarditis in 2 patients[9.1%]. Three hemodynamic responses to pericardiectomy were observed: [1] rapid response, where central venous pressure[CUP] fell below 10 cmH2O by 24 hours in 6 patients; [2] delayed response. Where CVP fell below 10 cmH2O by 48 hours in 12 patients; and [3] no response of CVP in 4 patients. Follow-up ranged from 6 to 62 months with an average of 35.3 months. Postoperative Functional Class was obtained for 21 surviving patients and showed 18 patients[81.8%] to be New York Heart Association functional class I or II.
Seventy eight patients underwent operation for combined multiple valve disease, with an overall early mortality of 14.1 % from January, 1983 to September, 1988 in the department of thoracic and cardiovascular surgery of Pusan National University Hospital. All of the above cases had combined multiple valve procedures. There were 33 mitral valve replacements and tricuspid annuloplasties, 33 aortic and mitral valve replacements, 5 aortic and mitral valve replacements with tricuspid annuloplasties, 3 aortic valve replacements and mitral annuloplasties, 1 open mitral commissurotomy and tricuspid annuloplasty and, 1 mitral valve replacement and primary closure of tricuspid valve cleft, 1 mitral valve replacement and aortic commissurotomy, 1 mitral, aortic and tricuspid valve replacement were done. 44 were male and 34 were female and the age distribution was from 14 to 57 with mean 38 year old. According to NYHA[New York Heart Association] classification, 49 patients were class I, 19 patients were class Il and 10 were class IV. Average perfusion time was 205.3 minutes. The live patients perfusion time was 178.7 minutes while that of dead ones was 272.0 minutes. Early deaths within 30 days from operation were 11 cases, 6 of which were due to low cardiac output, 3 were acute renal failure and 2 were cardiac rupture. The 65 patients were followed up from 2 to 30 months for a total 20.6 patient years. 1 patient committed suicide because of postoperative depression 1 year after operation. All of the survivors were enjoying their daily life and their NYHA class was superior to the preoperative ones.

Using antibiotics as growth promoter has been banned in poultry feed industry, thus various researchers try to seek an alternative to replace the growth-promoting antibiotics. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the growth performance via intestinal nutrient utilization and cecal microbial composition of broiler after dietary supplementation with most commonly using antibiotics, zinc bacitracin, and sophorolipid. A total of 180 1-day-old chicks were randomly assigned, and dietary treatment was as follow: CON, basal diet; ZB, 100 ppm of zinc bacitracin supplemented diet; and SPL, 250 ppm of sophorolipid supplemented diet. Their growth performance was evaluated and the samples of blood, small intestine, and ileal and cecal digesta were collected for biochemical, histological, and genomic analyses. The body weight and average daily gain of 7-day-old chicks were higher in ZB and those in overall experimental period were improved by ZB and SPL supplementation (p < 0.05). Their intestinal characteristics were not affected by dietary treatments in duodenum and ileum. Nonetheless, villus height was increased by SPL supplementation in jejunum (p < 0.05). Moreover, dietary SPL supplementation could down-regulate the expression level of pro-inflammatory cytokine, IL-1β (p < 0.05). mRNA levels of lipid and protein transporters did not differ among the treatments, however, relative expression levels of carbohydrate transporters, GLUT2 and SGLT1 were increased in broiler chicken's jejumum fed zinc bacitracin and sophorolipid supplemented diets (p < 0.05). Dietary zinc bacitracin supplementation could increase the population of Firmicutes in phylum level, and the portion of Turiciacter in genus level. On the other hands, the portion of Faecalibacterium was increased by dietary SPL supplementation compared to the other treatments. Our findings suggest that SPL supplementation improves growth performance through enhanced carbohydrate utilization capacity via improvement of gut morphological status and modulation of the cecal microbial population of broilers.
This study investigated how acculturation varies with demographic variables and is related to dietary habits among Korean Americans. The respondents were 162 Korea Americans aged at least 18 years old residing in the Greater New York metropolitan area. The level of acculturation was measured using a modified Suinn-Lew Asian Self-Identity Acculturation(SL-ASIA) scale. Acculturation was operationally defined to be composed of 6 factors, which are language, media use, friendship, food, pride, and ethnic self-identity. Each factor in the level of acculturation was identified by how it is related to demographics and dietary habits in the method of correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regressions analyses. The reliability of the modified SL-ASIA scale was high as measured by Cronbach alpha of .92. The level of acculturation was related to place of birth, age, length of residence in the U.S., and education. The younger, the longer they had lived in the U.S., and the more they were educated, the more acculturated. Acculturation could be predictable for 52% of its variance with all demographic variables. Among the 6 factors in the level of acculturation, five of them, language, media use friendship, food, and ethnic self-identity were correlated with dietary habit changes after immigration and type of meals. All 6 acculturation factors could predict 21% of change in dietary habits. the information from this study can be used to describe usual describe usual dietary habits according to various aspects of acculturation to better understand the dynamics among acculturation, demographics, and dietary habits.
As urbanization and impermeable areas have increased, stormwater and non-point pollutants entering the stream have increased. Additionally, in the case of the old town comprising a combined sewer pipe system, there is a problem of stream water pollution caused by the combined sewer overflow. To resolve this problem, many cities globally are pursuing an environmentally friendly low impact development strategy that can infiltrate, evaporate, and store rainwater. This study analyzed the expected effects and efficiency when the LID facility was installed as a measure to improve hydrologic cycle and water quality in the Oncheon stream in Busan. The EPA-SWMM, previously calibrated for hydrological and water quality parameters, was used, and standard parameters of the LID facilities supported by the EPA-SWMM were set. Benchmarking the green infrastructure plan in New York City, USA, has created various installation scenarios for the LID facilities in the Oncheon stream drainage area. The installation and maintenance cost of the LID facility for scenarios were estimated, and the effect of each LID facility was analyzed through a long-term EPA-SWMM simulation. Among the applied LID facilities, the infiltration trench showed the best effect, and the bio-retention cell and permeable pavement system followed. Conversely, in terms of cost-efficiency, the permeable pavement systems showed the best efficiency, followed by the infiltration trenches and bio-retention cells.

Suhwa Kim Hwan-gi established his own unique world of art based on Korean-style lyricism with his sophisticated and sublimated formative language as the first generation of Korean abstract artist. He made his name known not only in Korea but New York and Paris, the center of contemporary art. Presently, there is almost no material left for us to examine how Kim Hwan-gi's house looked in the first place. But there is a painting that chef Kim Am-gi possesses where we can find the image of painter Kim Hwan-gi's house drawn by recalling the memories at home in a far-off land. With that, we can see it should be the original looks of that house. To examine the original looks of Kim Hwan-gi's house when it was built, this author studied the closure land registration map. By analyzing 29 land registration maps around Eupdong-ri of Gijwa-myeon in Muan-gun of Jeollanam-do produced in 1917 which National Archives of Korea possesses, this researcher could figure out the status of land registration around Kim Hwan-gi's house with No. 15 and 22 drawing boards. According to the results of considering aerial photographs after the emancipation that National Geographic Information Institute possesses, this author has found that the arrangement of Kim Hwan-gi's house was changed from 1954 up to 2008. In 1954 aerophotos, we can see the main building and studio in Kim Hwan-gi's house and there was an additional structure between them. Kim Hwan-gi's house was built before 1925. The main building presently designated as a cultural asset and also the sarangchae arranged in the east and the studio, too, were built in the similar period.
Introduction: This study aimed to report on the effectiveness of using Korean medicine to improve symptoms of mitral stenosis. While some patients that do not require surgery due to mild mitral stenosis are treated with medication, the medication does not always alleviate the symptoms. Thus, we administered Korean medicine treatments to those patients because there are not many case reports on using this approach to treat symptoms of mitral stenosis. Case Presentation: A 48-year-old male patient with mitral stenosis complained of symptoms, such as palpitation, dyspnea, chest pain, fatigue, and swelling in both legs. To reduce the patient's symptoms, we administered Korean medical treatments, including herbal medicine (Samulanshin-tang-gamibang) and acupuncture. To evaluate the results, we used the numeric rating scale (NRS) and the New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification. After 17 days of treatment, the NRS score decreased for palpitation (8→2), dyspnea (8→1), chest pain (5→0), fatigue (96→2), and swelling in both legs (6→2). The NYHA class also changed from Class II to Class I. No adverse reaction was noted. Conclusion: According to the results, Korean medicine treatments can be considered to be effective for mitral stenosis patients. To confirm this finding, a prospective study is needed in the future.
Introduction: This study reports the effect of herbal medicine (Samulanshin-tang-gamibang) and acupuncture on complete atrioventricular (AV) block. Case presentation: A 63-year-old female with complete AV block was experiencing dyspnea, palpitation, dizziness, headache, bradycardia, and insomnia, and she was treated with Samulanshin-tang-gamibang and acupuncture for 12 days. To evaluate the treatment, a numeric rating scale (NRS) and the New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional classification was used. The patient's NRS scores decreased from 6 to 2 for dyspnea and palpitation and from 5 to 1 for dizziness and headache. Her NYHA Class improved from Class II to Class I. No side effects were observed during treatment. Conclusion: This study suggests that herbal medicine and acupuncture may be effective in relieving symptoms caused by complete AV block. However, the long-term effects of the treatment were not observed, and so further studies are still needed.
Recently because of development of technology the old cultural properties and damaged artworks are stored as digital information using digital technology and produced related contents as well as moving images or digital contents. The regenerated information and contents through digital technology conveys correct information of ancient art and helps audiences appreciate it, as well as it also stores accurate information and can be used for restoration and preservation of the work. In this study, the range of digital restoration was defined in three directions, and the exhibition of digital content with an ancillary role that can be useful the understanding of the heritage of nature and mankind using digital technology was defined as the range of digital restoration. In addition, the Ojukheon Museum in Kangneung and The Museum of Natural History in New York, which installed various digital displays to analyze and compare the types of digital display exhibitions used for digital restoration of the range, were described as examples. Through this, it was discovered that digital display exhibitions for digital restoration can effectively deliver information and stimulate participation and interest of visitors in the museums, which is able to be a positive way to preserve the heritage of nature and mankind.

Upregulation of the nutritional value of feed is the major target of various studies in the livestock industry, and dietary enzyme supplementation could aid in digesting the nondegrading nutrients of grains in feed ingredients. Dried distillers' grains with solubles (DDGS) is a byproduct of the fermentation process in the beverage industry and can be used as a large supply source of fiber in feed. Therefore, we conducted an experiment with male broiler chickens to investigate the effect of various types of enzymes on DDGS and compare the efficacy of single enzyme and multienzyme complexes on growth performance and gut environments in broiler chickens. We used 420 1-day-old broiler chickens (Ross 308), and they were allotted into 4 dietary treatments with seven replications (CON, corn-soybean meal [SBM] diet; NC, DDGS supplemented diet; SE, 0.05 % of mannanase supplemented DDGS-based diet; MC, 0.10% of multienzyme complex (mannanase and xylanase, glucanase) supplemented DDGS-based diet. The dietary exogenous enzyme in the DDGS-supplemented diet could improve growth performance as much as the growth of the control group, and digestibility of dry matter, crude protein, and gross energy were significantly increased by enzyme addition in groups of chicks fed DDGS-supplementation diet. Moreover, the populations of pathogenic bacteria, coliforms, and Bacteroidetes were significantly decreased by enzyme supplementation, which might lead to improved gut mucus-secreting cells and inflammatory cytokines in the jejunum. Collectively, dietary single enzyme and multienzyme complexes could improve gut environments, including intestinal immune responses and gut microbial population, and lead to improvement of growth performance in broiler chickens.
