BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Different fatty acids exert different health benefits. This study investigated the potential protective effects of perilla, olive, and safflower oils on high-fat diet-induced obesity and colon inflammation. MATERIALS/METHODS: Five-week old, C57BL/6J mice were assigned to 5 groups: low-fat diet (LFD), high-fat diet (HFD) and high-fat diet supplemented with-perilla oil (HPO), olive oil (HOO), and safflower oil (HSO). After 16 weeks of the experimental period, the mice were sacrificed, and blood and tissues were collected. The serum was analyzed for obesity- and inflammation-related biomarkers. Gene expression of the biomarkers in the liver, adipose tissue, and colon tissue was analyzed. Micro-computed tomography (CT) analysis was performed one week before sacrifice. RESULTS: Treatment with all the three oils significantly improved obesity-induced increases in body weight, liver weight, and epididymal fat weight as well as serum triglyceride and leptin levels. Treatment with perilla oil (PO) and safflower oil (SO) increased adiponectin levels. The micro-CT analysis revealed that PO and SO reduced abdominal fat volume considerably. The mRNA expression of lipogenic genes was reduced in all the three oilsupplemented groups and PO upregulated lipid oxidation in the liver. Supplementation of oils improved macroscopic score, increased colon length, and decreased serum endotoxin and proinflammatory cytokine levels in the colon. The abundance of Bifidobacteria was increased and that of Enterobacteriaceae was reduced in the PO-supplemented group. All three oils reduced proinflammatory cytokine levels, as indicated by the mRNA expression. In addition, PO increased the expression of tight junction proteins. CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, our data indicate that the three oils exert similar anti-obesity effects. Interestingly, compared with olive oil and SO, PO provides better protection against high-fat diet-induced colon inflammation, suggesting that PO consumption helps manage inflammation-related diseases and provides omega-3 fatty acids needed by the body.
Plant seed oil-bodies or oleosomes ate the repository of the neutral lipid stored in seeds. These organelles in many oilseeds may comprise half of the total cellular volume. Oleosomes are surrounded by a half-unit membrane of phospholipid into which are embedded proteins called oleosins. Oleosins are present at high density on the oil-body surface and after storage proteins comprise the most abundant proteins in oilseeds. Oleosins are specifically targeted and anchored to oil-bodies after co-translation on the ER. It has been shown that the amino-acid sequences responsible for this unique targeting reside primarily in the central hydrophobic tore of the oleosin polypeptide. In addition, a signal-like sequence is found near the junction of the hydrophobic domain and ann N-terminal hydrophilic / amphipathic domain. This "signal" which is uncleaved is also essential for correct targeting. Oil-bodies and their associated oleosins may be recovered by floatation centrifugation of aqueous seed extracts. This simple partitioning step results in a dramatic enrichment for oleosins in the oil-body fraction. In the light of these properties, we reasoned that it would be feasible to create fusion proteins on oil-bodies comprising oleosins and an additional valuable protein of pharmaceutical or industrial interest. It was further postulated that if these proteins were displayed on the outer surface of oil-bodies, it would be possible to release them from the purified oil-bodies using chemical or proteolytic cleavage. This could result in a simple means of recovering high-value protein from seeds at a significant (i.e. commercial) scale. This procedure has been successfully reduced to practice for a wide variety of proteins of therapeutic, industrial and food no. The utillity of the method will be discussed using a blood anticoagulant, hirudin, and industrial enzymes as key examples.

In this research, the oil detection method and the characteristic of sensor using the selective reaction of silicone rubber in response to hydrocarbon oil will be described. As a sensing principle, the swelling property of silicone rubber in response to hydrocarbon fuel is used, also a strain gauge is used to transduce the volume change to an electrical signal. The sensor core is manufactured with a strain gauge embedded in silicone rubber by the curing process and experiments for characteristics of sensor core with various oils were carried out. It is shown that the sensor core can be used as an oil spill detection sensor. Also, for the application to the sea area, a buoy type sensor platform is integrated with a sensor core and a strain amplifier and it is tested in the simulated oil spill condition. In this study, it is proven that the integrated sensor can be used for the detection of various oils.

Most of marine pollution have been occurred by oil spill accidents resulted from ship accidents in South Korea. This year there were two large oil spill accidents: the Yeosu Oil Spill Accident (2014.01.31.(Fri.) 09:35 LT) and the Captain Vangelis L. Oil Spill Accident (2014.02.15.(Sat.) 14:00 LT). In general, Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is used in monitoring and detection of oil dumping and spilled oils by accident at sea. Therefore it is expected that KOMPSAT-5, launched successfully last year, will take part in that mission during a normal operation mode. After the two accidents, high spatial resolution optical satellite data including KOMPSAT-3 were acquired February 2 and 14, 2014. In this presentation, we analyzed optical properties of spilled oils from optical satellite imagery to estimate the spilled area and the volume at each region. Finally, a satellite application planning for ocean surveillance in South Korea will be presented.

The present study was carried out to discuss the suitability of the criterion for the determination of the on-water oil removal resource requirement in Korea by comparison with the US criterion. According to the present criterion in Korea, the on-water response operation against the worst case discharge assuming the oil spillage of 60,000 ton from the accident of DWT 300,000 tanker requires the oil recovery capacity of 19,425 kl/hr (on-water recovery volume 20,000 ton). Under the US criterion, the recovery capacity of 16,667 kl/hr is required to respond to oil spill accident of the worst case discharge from the DWT 300,000 tanker. The result shows that resource requirement from the Korean criterion is 16% higher than US criterion, indicating that thc Korean criterion is reasonable.
A quick-acting hydraulic fuse, which is mainly composed of a poppet, a seat, and a spring, must be designed to minimize the leaked oil volume during fuse operation on a line rupture. The optimal design parameters of a quick-acting hydraulic fuse were searched using the design of experiments method and the complex method. First, the $L_{50}(5^4)$ orthogonal array is used to find the robust minimum point among the 625 points of design variables. The search range can then be narrowed around the robust minimum point. Second, the $L_{25}(5^4)$ orthogonal array is used to obtain the variations of the design variables in the narrowed search range. The variations of design variables are used to set the structure of a polynomial equation representing the leakage oil volume of the quick-acting hydraulic fuse. The least squares method is then applied to obtain the coefficients of polynomial equation. Finally, the complex method is used to find the optimal design parameters where the objective function is described by the polynomial equation.

This study is a series of studies intended to derive the improvement of strength concrete quality using an emulsified refined oil (ERCO). In other words, ERCO is used to analyze the improvement degree of the basic properties of ordinary strength concrete by pre-adding the AE Agent on its products. ERCO was also planned to have a mixing ratio of 0, 0.5 %, and the pre-addtion of AE agent mixed with 0, 1, 2, and 3 % of the concrete's mixed ERCO mass. As a result, as the pre-injection of AE agent was increased, the slump, and air contents tended to be improved microscopically, but there was no significant effect. and Compressive strength tends to increase smart-all as the pre-addtion of AE agent increases in concrete, but it does not have a significant effect.
This research was studied to optimize the recipe of rice pound cake with two concentrations of Euonymus alatus and grape seed oil, using central composite design (CCD). The mixing condition of rice pound cake was optimized by subjecting it to sensory evaluation and mechanical and physicochemical analysis, using response surface methodology (RSM). The results of the mechanical and physicochemical analysis showed significant values for color (lightness, redness, yellowness), texture (hardness, springiness, chewiness, gumminess, cohesiveness), loss rate, volume, specific volume, sweetness, saltiness, moisture content and pH (p<0.05). The results of the sensory evaluation showed significant values for color, flavor, taste, softness, appearance and overall quality (p<0.05). As a result, the optimized compounding ratio was found to be 4.28 g of Euonymus alatus and 33.18 g of grape seed oil.
The purpose of this study was to determine the optimal composite recipe of rice muffins with 3 concentrations of Spergularia marina L. Griseb, sugar and grape seed oil, using central composite design. In addition, the mixing condition of rice muffins was optimized by subjecting it to sensory evaluation and mechanical and physicochemical analysis using response surface methodology (RSM). In regard to its antioxidant effects, Spergularia marina L. Griseb had a total phenol and flavonoid contents and DPPH free radical scavenging activity of 17.03 mg/g, 5.13 mg/g and 17.21%, respectively. The results of mechanical and physicochemical analysis showed significant values for lightness, redness, yellowness, hardness, springiness, chewiness, gumminess, cohesiveness, height, volume, weight, specific volume, loss rate, pH, moisture, sweetness and saltiness (p<0.05), and the results of sensory evaluation showed significant values for color, flavor, taste, softness, appearance and overall quality (p<0.05). As results, optimal sensory ratio was found to be 6.69 g of Spergularia marina L. Griseb, 41.89 g of sugar and 30.48 g of grape seed oil.
Since national GHG reduction target by 2020 has been presented in Korea, the role of railroad has been reinforced within transport system due to the allocation of reduction target into sector. So, it is necessary to manage activity data systematically for the calculation of GHG emission in railroad. Now, the activity data of diesel consumption for NIR(National Inventory Report) are provided from oil supply and demand statistics. On the other hands, the activity data collected directly from railroad operating companies are used for GHG & Energy Target Management Act. This study aimed to assess the GHG emissions using two kinds of activity data related to the diesel consumption of railroad in 2009 and 2010. As a result, GHG emissions based on oil supply and demand statistics was 636 thousands ton $CO_{2e}$, but the activity data collected from railroad operating companies showed 649 thousands ton $CO_{2e}$ in 2009. Also, the gap of $CO_{2e}$ emission was increased in 2010. These trends were caused because oil supply and demand statistics included total diesel sales volume during 1 year and the activity data collected from railroad operating companies were the amount of diesel consumption only at railcar operation and maintenance step. In conclusion, it is important to develop the management and verification system of activity data with high reliability to substitute oil supply and demand statistics in railroad sector.
