The spool displacement signal of a directional control valve, including the servo valve, can be considered as the standard signal to measure dynamic characteristics. When the spool displacement signal is not available, the velocity signal of a metering cylinder piston can be used. In this study, the frequency response characteristics of the metering cylinder are investigated for the spool displacement input. The transfer functions of the servo valve-metering system are derived taking into consideration the oil inertia effect in the transmission lines. The theoretical results of the transfer functions are verified through computer simulations and experiments. The oil inertia effect in the transmission lines was found to have a very significant effect on the bandwidth frequency of the servo valve-metering cylinder system. In order to more precisely measure the dynamic characteristics of a servo valve, the metering cylinder should be set up to minimize the oil inertia effect by increasing the inner diameters of the transmission lines or shortening their lengths.
Investigation of the mass effect on the journal traces in the clearance of engine bearing has been performed for better design of mass distribution of crank system components such as crank pin, piston, con-rod, balance weight, crank throw weight, etc. as well as for better oil reaction behaviors to the applied forces from the cylinder pressures on the bearing. In this preliminary study, crank pin traces in the engine bearing clearance are computed by varying the equivalent magnitude of crank pin mass that includes the masses of crank pin, piston, con-rod. etc.. while most previous studies regarding journal traces in the bearing clearance neglect the inertia effects of crank pin mass. Although the inertia effect of pill mass is negligibly small compared to viscous force by ${\pi}bearing$ theory, it is found that it gives a great amount of influences on the journal traces in full bearing computation $(2\pi\;bearing\;theory)$ under the dynamic loading conditions.
This paper is a study on the dynamic characteristics of truncated cone type squeeze film damper(SFD) bearing and rotor system. This model can alter the radial oil film gap which Is Important to the performance of rotor-bearing system and manufactured easily to change the shape concept of traditional circular type SFD bearing. In theoretical analysis, the oil film pressure distribution, the oil film force, the film damping coefficient and the eccentricity ratio, etc. were induced with regard to the film inertia effect. The film damping coefficients and optimum design parameters are calculated. When unbalance parameter U is greater than 0.2, the nonlinear vibration such as "Jump" phenomena appears in the vicinity of rotor critical speed. At this time, the increases of bearing parameter U, journal distance S, Reynolds number Re can control this unstable vibration. The experimental results show that SFD hearing and rotor system which are designed according to the design parameters in the stable region are operated stably in rotational speed 9,600rpm without nonsynchronous behavior.
The worldwide focus on reducing the emissions, fuel and lubricant consumption in T-GDI engines is leading engineers to consider the crankcase ventilation and oil mist separation system as an important means of control. In today's passenger cars, the oil mist separation systems mainly use the inertia effect (e.g. labyrinth, cyclone etc.). Therefore, this study has investigated high efficiency cylinder head-integrated oil-mist separator by using a compact multi-impactor type oil mist separator system to ensure adequate oil mist separation performance. For this purpose, engine dynamometer testing with oil particle efficiency measurement equipment and 3D two-phase flow simulation have been performed for various engine operating conditions. Tests with an actual engine on a dynamometer showed oil aerosol particle size distributions varied depending on operating conditions. For instance, high rpm and load increases bot only blow-by gases but the amount of small size oil droplets. Submicron-sized particles (less than 0.5 ㎛) were also observed. It is also found that the impactor type separator is able to separate nearly no droplets of diameter lower than 3 ㎛. CFD results showed that the complex aerodynamics processes that lead to strong impingement and break-up can strip out large droplets and generate more small size droplets.

Numerous oil tanker losses have been reported and one of the possible causes of such casualties is caused by the structural failure of aging ship hulls in rough weather. In aging ships, corrosion and fatigue cracks are the two most important factors affecting structural safety and integrity. This research is about effect on hull girder ultimate strength behavior of double hull oil tanker according to corrosion after Part I: stiffened panel. Based on corrosion data of Part I (time-dependent corrosion wastage model and CSR corrosion model), when progressing corrosion of fourtypes of double hull oil tankers (VLCC, Suezmax, Aframax, and Panamax), the ultimate strength behavior of hull girder is compared and analyzed. In case of the ultimate strength behavior of hull girder, when occurring corrosion, the result under vertical and horizontal bending moment is analyzed. The effect of time-dependent corrosion wastage on the ultimate hull girder strength as well as the area, section modulus, and moment of inertia are also studied. The result of this research will be useful data to evaluate ultimate hull girder strength of corroded double hull oil tanker.
The spool displacement of directional control valve can be considered as the standard signal to measure the bandwidth frequency of a directional control valve. When the spool displacement is not available, the metering-orifice system is implemented in this research as an alternative way of measuring the 90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency of the hydraulic directional control valve. The inertia effect on the transmission line oil induces the phase lead of the valve load pressure when compared with the phase of spool displacement. The capacitance effect of the oil induces the phase lag of the valve load pressure. The phase of the load pressure can be adjusted to be the same as that of the spool displacement by controlling the opening area of the metering orifice. A series of experiments were conducted to verify the effectiveness of the metering orifice. The 90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency measured from the valve load pressure was significantly deviated in some cases from the frequency of the spool displacement. The metering orifice was hard to be applied to measure the -90 degrees phase bandwidth frequency of the high precision.
Spool displacement of a direction control valve is the standard signal to measure the bandwidth frequency of the direction control valve. When the spool displacement signal is not available, it is suggested in this study to use the metering hydraulic line as an alternative way to measure - 90 degree phase bandwidth frequency of the hydraulic direction control valve. Dynamics of the hydraulic line is composed of inertia, capacitance, and friction effects. The effect of oil inertia is dominant in common hydraulic line dynamics and the line dynamics is close to a derivative action in a range of high frequency; such as a range of bandwidth frequency of common directional control valves. Phase difference between spool displacement and line load pressure is nearly constant as a valve close to 90 degree. If phase difference is compensated from the phase between valve input and pressure, compensated phase may be almost same as the phase of spool displacement that is a standard signal to measure phase bandwidth frequency of the directional control valve. A series of experiments were conducted to examine the possibility of using line pressure in to measure phase bandwidth frequency of a directional control valve. Phase bandwidth frequency could be measured with relatively high precision based on metering hydraulic line technique and it reveals consistent results even when valve input, oil temperature, and supply pressure change.
The damping characteristics of a cylindrical structure containing oil and bearing balls is investigated for external bending forces. The experimental data obtained through the use of bearing balls with viscous oil in a column is given and analyzed. The viscous action of the oil and inertia effects of the balls on the inside of column create a drag force. The drag force dampens the vibration of the column. This study aims to search for an optimum combination of oil and balls which would produce maximum damping. Machining oils of various viscosities along with ball bearings of various sizes place inside cantilevered aluminium tubes of various diameters to create a rig on which the damping properties of the oil and balls can be studied. The contileved tubes are studied in both horizontal and vertical positions in order to gauge the effect of gravity on the system. The actions of the ball in the column and damping characteristics are investigated according to the dimensionless terms. The Buckingham theorem is used to reduce the variables and to predict the damping of an oil ball column. Though the damping ratio remains fairly constant in the horizontal position of column, the damping ratio begins to increase as the ratio of the number of balls and column length rise above 0.28 in the vertical position of oil ball column. The ratio of the ball diameter to column diameter influences the damping ratio with an optimum diameter ratio. Slenderness ratio and gravity effects on the damping ratio ane investigated.
Although swash-plate type axial piston pumps have the merits of wide operating conditions and high efficiency, the characteristics of pressure pulsation and flow ripple which result in system noise generation are on-going problems. This research examined the analytic models of the dynamic oil pressure and flow characteristics in the pump. A new mathematical model which considered the pressure behaviors of each cylinder and discharge piping was developed to analyze the pump pressure and flow. This model also considered the leakages in the clearances which many researchers have ignored so far. Using the developed model, numerical calculations were implemented. The results showed that widely used simple model which considered only a single cylinder can not predict actual discrete flow dynamics and that fluid inertia effect has to be considered in the mathematical model. Several critical parameters were discussed such as port volume and discharge resistance on the assumption that the pipe length is not so long. The effect of leakages was studied on the final stage.
This application study of a swash-plate type axial piston pump was concerned about the lubrication characteristics between cylinder barrel and valve plate which are the main rotating body and its opposite sliding part respectively. A computer simulation was implemented to assess bearing and sealing functions of the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate. A numerical algorithm was developed to facilitate simultaneous calculations of dynamic cylinder pressure, 3 degree-of-freedom barrel motions considering inertia effect, and fluid film pressure assuming full fluid film lubrication regime. Central clearance, tilt angle, and azimuth angle of the rotating body were calculated for each time step. Surface waviness was found to be an influential factor due to the small fluid film thickness which can appear in flat land bearings. Five surface lays which can form on the lubrication surface in accordance with machining process were defined and analyzed using the simulation tool. Oil leakage flow and frictional torque in the fluid film between cylinder barrel and valve plate were also calculated to discuss in the viewpoint of energy loss. The simulation results showed that in actual sliding conditions proper surface non-flatness can make a positive effect on the energy efficiency and reliability of the thrust bearing.
