Pile load tests using Osterberg cells (O-cell) were conducted on cast-in-place concrete piles founded in oil sand fill and in situ oil sand at an industrial plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Interpreted pile test results show that very high pile shaft resistance (with the Bjerrum-Burland or Beta coefficient of 2.5-4.5) against oil sand could be mobilized at small relative displacements of 2-3% of shaft diameter. Finite element simulations based on linear elastic and elasto-plastic models for oil sand materials were used to analyze the pile load test measurements. Two constitutive models yield comparable top-down load versus pile head displacement curves, but very different behaviour in mobilization of pile shaft and end bearing resistances. The elasto-plastic model produces more consistent matching in both pile shaft and end bearing resistances whereas the linear elastic under- and over-predicts the shaft and end bearing resistances, respectively. The mobilization of high shaft resistance in oil sand under pile load is attributed to the very dense and interlocked structure of oil sand which results in high matrix stiffness, high friction angle, and high shear dilation.
It is very important to control pressure and flow rate distribution on each component of engine lubrication network. Sometimes many kinds of orifice are used to control flow rate in the hydraulic lubrication field. In this study orifices were adopted on the lubrication network to control oil flow rate distribution. And unsteady transient flow network analysis was carried out to find out the effects of orifices on the engine oil circuit system.

Recently a high speed spindle system for machine tools has attracted considerable attention to reduce the machining time, to improve the machining accuracy, to perform the machining of light metals and hard materials and to unite the cutting and grinding processes. In this study, a high speed spindle system is developed by applying the oil-air lubrication method, angular contact ball bearings, injection nozzles with dual orifices and so on. And a lubrication experiment for evaluating the performance of the spindle system is carried out. Especially, in order to establish the lubrication conditions related to the development of a high speed spindle system, the effects of oil supply rate, rotational spindle speed and so on are studied and discussed on the bearing temperature rise, bearing temperature distribution and frictional torque. And the effect of spindle system structure on the bearing temperature distribution is investigated.
Recently, due to the erosion damage that were generated increasingly at alloy metals of slide bearing by cavity of lubricating oil with tendency of high speed and high output of reciprocating engine, there is a need to study the process on the formation of cavitation erosion, and the characteristic of cavitation erosion at lubricating oil environments under various condition for marine ship. Therefore, the apparatus of cavitation erosion experiment used 20 KHz, $24 \mu m$ piezoelectric vibrator. The main results obtained through this test method are as follows: 1. The max. erosion rate at lubricating oil environments was related to the change of space, oil film thickness, and shown to tendency of gear oil>system oil>turbine oil>mixed oil environments with different viscosity. 2. The pitted hole by cavitation erosion at high viscosity oil environments became small and deep, and in addition to, they appeared to be wide and shallow at low viscosity.

Machining accuracy of machine tools spindles using the hydrostatic bearing, largely depends on the static stiffness and the thermal deformation of the spindle unit. In this paper, the modelling and static, thermal analysis of the hydrostatic spindles were performed for the relationship between the design variables like the bearing span, overhang, bearing stiffness and static stiffness at spindle. The goal of optimization is the mazimum, static stiffness at spindle nose with lower temperature rise in hydrostatic bearing. Temperature rise of hydrostatic bearing is minimized with the variables of spindle diameter and oil supply pressure. Finally, validity of the proposed algorithm is verified by improving the static, thermal performance of the existing hydrostatic spindles.
The effects of journal speed and bearing load on pressure distribution and the temperature distribution of bearing surface are investigated experimentally. The journal bearing which has 219.94mm diameter, length-to-diameter ratio of L/D=0.8 and clearance ratio of 0.004 is used. Journal has a built-in pressure transducer for the measurement of pressure distribution in the mid plane of bearing. Bearing surface temperatures are measured at 60 points. The bearing load is varied from 300 N to 5900 N and journal speed from 300 rpm to 2500 rpm. As the load is increased under constant speed, the location of maximum pressure moves to the site of minimum film thickness, and maximum pressure and absolute value of minimum pressure are increased. The temperature distribution in vicinity of oil inlet shows that heated lubricant's carry-over exists around the oil inlet.
In this paper, the distribution of internal magnetic induction intensity of oil-film bearing twined solenoids was proposed. The magnetic field was generated by solenoids and magnetized bearing. The magnetized bearing was simplified as solenoid model. The mathematical model of magnetic induction intensity at any point of finite solenoid was deduced. Through experiment method, the distribution of the internal magnetic induction intensity of oil-film bearing and the magnetizing current formula of bearing was obtained. Further, the magnetic induction intensity distribution of magnetization bearing was solved successfully. The results showed that the magnetic induction was a second-degree parabola with open upwards along the axial plane and the distribution of magnetic induction intensity was opposite to the rule of magnetic induction intensity generated by solenoids. In addition, the magnetic flux density increased linearly with the increase of current.

The oil-impregnated sintered bearings are used for various aplecations and, wide usages without refueling. The oil circulating mechanism operates smoothly the behavior of oil If doing at the time of passing and becoming a stationary state, and there is little thing where trouble is caused. On the other hand, the trouble of such as starting noise might be caused in the unstationary state that repeats operation for a short time. To study the behavior of oil of each parameter, we execute the numerical simulation and various verification experiments. As a result, we developed that the bearings were able to be used enough for various brief operating time in the unstationary state. Finally we have expanded the usage of the oil-impregnated sintered bearings by adding the consideration of the behavior of oil.

This paper reports on the balance weight effect on the lubrication and friction characteristics of crankshaft system. To determine the main bearing loads, the crankshaft was treated as statically determinate system. Four and eight-balance weight crankshafts were considered, and minimum oil film thickness and friction loss were calculated. The main bearing loads were increased in the four-balance shaft due to the increasing of unbalanced rotating mass at No. 1 and 3 main bearing sides. The minimum oil film thickness of four-balance shaft became thinner than eight-balance, and friction loss was increased.
In this study, using the governing equation for thermohydrodyamic lubrication involving the homogeneous mixture of incompressible fluid derived by based on the principle of continuum mechanics, it is discussed the effects of water within turbine oil on the performance of high speed journal bearing of a steam turbine shipping engine. The governing equation is the general equation being able to be applied on the mixture of Newtonian fluid and non-Newtonian fluid. Here, the fluid viscosity index, n of power-law non-Newtonian fluid is supposed to be 1 for the application of the journal bearing in a steam turbine shipping engine lubricated with the mixture of two Newtonian fluid, for example, water within turbine oil. The results related with the bearing performance are showed.
