  • Combustion characteristics of boiler fuels made of bio-oil and light-oil were experimentally investigated. Bio-oil was obtained by fast pyrolysis of woody biomass. Emulsion fuel made by mixing bio-oil (up to 30wt%) with light-oil and surfactant was completely burnt, resulting in the formation of combusted gas containing CO concentration less than 10ppm. Simple mixtures of bio-oil and light-oil with separate delivery lines also gave nice combustion characteristics.

  • Naturally present antioxidants, tocopherols, carotenoids, and phospholipids in the bran and germ oils from Keumkang (K-WBG oil) and Dark Northern Spring wheats (DNS-WBG oil) were determined during storage under 1700 lux light at $5^{\circ}C$ by HPLC. Oil oxidation was monitored by peroxide values (POV) and conjugated dienoic acid content. The results showed that antioxidants were degraded during storage of the WBG oils under light, with higher degradation rates for carotenoids and phospholipids in the K-WBG oil compared to the DNS-WBG oil. Light increased oil oxidation and the rate of oxidation was higher in K-WBG oil than in the DNS-WBG oil. There was a high correlation between POV and residual amounts of antioxidants during photo-oxidation, with phospholipids showing the greatest effects on POV. This study suggests that a higher amount and lower degradation rate of phospholipids in the DNS-WBG oil contributed to its higher photo-oxidative stability compared to the K-WBG oil.

  • The summary of a study of efficacy of Rose essential oil and Lavender essential oil against skin-inflammation caused to surfactant is as follows. As a result of protein analysis, although Rose essential oil and Lavender essential oil stimulates skin, there is no much alteration of protein. The alteration of protein's bend to be under part of 43Kd is appeared in the group treated Rose essential oil and Lavender essential oil. The stratum of the group treated by surfactant is more, the stratum of the group treated by surfactant is more thick. As the observed result of alteration of basal layer, it is seen that the group treated Rose essential oil and Lavender essential oil takes the shape of cell layer constant, and the group treated Rose essential oil is made the basal cell layer of normal structure than that of Lavender essential oil. As the observed result of alteration of Mast cell group treated by Rose essential oil and Lavender essential oil for 3 weeks Luna's stain(${\times}20$), (${\times}100$), it is observed that the damaged group treated by Lavender essential oil is numerous in alteration of mast cell's number, and Mast cell's size is larger than the damaged group.

  • Korean sesame oil mixed with corn oil and Chinese sesame oil were subjected to instrumental determination for fatty acid composition, sesaminol and sesamin contents, and induction period by AOM test to obtain basic data for ascertaining the truth of pure sesame oil, respectively. In sesame oil mixed with corn oil, stearic acid content of sesame oil containing above 20% corn oil was remarkably discriminated from that of pure sesame oil. Oleic and linoleic acid contents of sesame oil with 10% corn oil were significantly differnt from that of pure sesame oil. Stearicllinoleic acid ratio of sesame oil mixed with corn oil dcreased in proportion to corn oil content in sesame oil. Sesamolin and sesamin contents of sesame oil containing 30% corn oil were lower 18.3% and 21.0% than those of pure sesame oil, respectively. Induction periods of sesame oil by AOM were 8.14~9.24 hrs in Chinese sesame oil and sesame oils including 20% and 40% corn oils, but around 16hrs in Korean pure sesame oil. Based on the above results, it is considered that the comparisons of fatty acids, sesaminol and sesamin contents, and induction period by AOM test might be one of the potential criteria in discriminating between pure sesame oil and sesame oil mixed with corn oil.

  • The engine oil is an oil used for lubrication of various internal combustion engines. Recently, the vehicle and engine oil manufacture usually guarantee for oil change over 15000~20000 km mileage, but the most of driver usually change engine oil every 5000 km driving in Korea. In this case, it is possible to cause environmental contamination by used engine oil and increase the cost of driving by frequently oil change. In this study, we investigate the various physical properties such as flash point, pour point, kinematic viscosity, cold cranking simulator, total acid number, and four-ball test for fresh engine oil and used engine oil after vehicle driving (5000 km, 10000 km). The test result showed that the total acid number and wear scar by four-ball test of used engine oil had increased than fresh engine oil, but 2 kind of used oil (5000 km and 10000 km) had similar physical properties.

  • In this experiment, we investigated the hypolipidemic and antithrombotic effects of rats fed diets with different common oils in Korea for different feeding periods(4 weeks or 12 weeks), using Korean sesame oil, perilla oil, rice bran oil and mixed oil. W-3/w-6 ratio of each group was 0.001, 1.44, 0.03 and 0.112, respectively. P/S ratio of each group was 9.64, 10.49, 5.58 and 1.68, respectively. The result were as follows: 1) According to the age, body fat accumulation was increased. 2) Perilla oil(w-3 rich) decreased total lipid, triglyceride and total cholesterol, and increased HDL/total cholesterol ratio. 3) With regard to the compositono of platelet fatty acids, Perilla oil increased w-3/w-6 ratio of the platelet. Perilla oil lengthened bleeding time and decreased MDA(MalonDAdehyde) formation which determined in place of Thromboxane A2(TXA2) in platelet. This result can suggest that linoleic acid of perrilla oil seem to supress the conversion of linoleic acid to arachidonic acid(AA 20:4, w-6) and eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA, 20:5, w-3) trannnsformed from linolenic acid to suppress the conversion of arachidonic acid to TXA2. Since TXA2 is platelet-aggregating and vasoconstricting agent, the reduction of TXA2 tgeneration by platelet with increased linolenic acid intakes shows prologed bleeding time. In conclusion, w-3 rich perilla oil has strong hypolipidemic and antithrombotic effects by changing fatty acid profiles of the platelet.
