  • Ohjuksan has been used for the treatment of cold and pantalgia in traditional medicine. The anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous extract from Ohjuksan (OJSE) was investigated utilizing acetic acid-induced edema and adjuvant arthritis in rats. The effects of this agent on acute toxicity and acetic acid-induced writhing syndrome in mice were also examined. OJSE did not showed acute toxicity at 2400mg/kg (p.o.) and 1200mg/kg(i.p.) body weight. It was also showed to have significant analgesic action on the writhing syndrome in mice induced by 0.7% acetic acid at 300,600mg/kg body weight. It showed anti-inflammatory activity in 5% acetic acid-induced edema and adjuvant arthritis with oral administration in rats and exhibited significant preventive effect on edema at 300 and 600mg/kg(p<0.01). In the method of adjuvant arthritis, orally administered for 19 days, it inhibited the hind paw edema in rats with 300 and 600 mg/kg body weight from 5 th day to 19th day. These results suggest that OJSE had analgesic and anti-inflammatory action.

  • Objectives : Quality of life(QoL) in patients with lung cancer usually goes down after pneumoectomy, and the pain is the most common cause. Uncontrolled postoperative pain can restrict the movements of shoulders resulting in frozen shoulder. This case report is to report the effect of herb medicine, Ohjuksan on a 49-year-old female lung cancer patient with shoulder pain after lobectomy. Methods : The patient was treated with Ohjuksan for 10 days. The patient's symptoms were assessed by range of motion(ROM) of shoulder, Visual analogue scale(VAS) of shoulder pain and abdominal diagnosis. Results & Conclusions : The patient showed improvement of ROM, VAS and abdominal diagnosis. As the shoulder pain is relieved from VAS6 to VAS3, ROM of abduction, adduction and internal rotation were increased. Also discomfort of abdomen was disapeared to a certain degree. This suggests that herb medicine, Ohjuksan is effective for treating postoperative pain of shoulder for a Lung cancer patient.

We suggest oriental treatment for pain relief and better movement of shoulder impingement. Methods : A -Shi Point, Sa-am acupuncture, ohjuksan-gamipang, seokyongtang-gamipang were used to treat shoulder pain. we evaluated the patient through VAS(Visual Analogue Scale) daily and Physical Examinations. Results : After 5 days of treatment, shoulder pain was decreased from VAS 7.5 to VAS 2 and After 3 weeks, the patient showed nearly full ROM(range of movement). Conclusion : In shoulder impingement syndrome, oriental treatment is good method for pain relief and better movement.

  • Queen Myeongseong was the wife of King Hyeonjong, the 18th king of the Joseon Dynasty, and the mother of King Sukjong. The clinical records of Queen Myeongseong are summarized on the basis of the Seungjeongwon Ilgi (The Daily Records of Royal Secretariat of Joseon Dynasty 承政院日記) and reviewed through Donguibogam. Queen Myeongseong gave birth to one male and three female children in the time of the queen. She took Geumgaedangguihwan (金櫃當歸丸), Dalsaengsan (達生散), Antaeum (安胎飮) during her pregnancy and Gungguitang (芎歸湯) during postnatal care. Since 1669, chest tightness, sleeplessness, arm pain and numbness of arms had been appeared. Ondamtang (溫膽湯) and Dodamtang (導痰湯) were used but they were not effective. However, when her symptoms were regarded as a benign tumor due to cold and wetness, there was a difference in the use of Ohjuksan (五積散). In 1683, when king Sukjong was caught in a smallpox, she took care of him. She exorcised in the middle of winter to pray for her son's recovery, and died of the flu.
