  • Recently wind turbines become large, constructed as farms and going out to offshore. Different design approach from onshore is needed for offshore wind turbine. At this paper concept and preliminary design of an offshore wind turbine of 3MW rated power are performed. The concept design started from modelling of the generator and gearbox. With these modelling the optimum specifications was acquired. Integrated type of drive train is designed with all parts are mounted on the tower top as the offshore maintenance strategy. At the preliminary stage control system, power production algorithm and safety system are designed. Load calculation is also performed. The 3MW offshore wind turbine concept/preliminary design and the process of design are obtained as results.

  • In order to meet the low voltage ride-through requirement in a grid code, a wind power plant (WPP) has to stay connected to a grid, supporting the voltage recovery for a grid fault. To do this, a plant-level controller as well as a wind generator (WG) controller is essential. The dynamic response of a WPP should be analyzed in order to design a plant-level controller. The dynamic response of a WPP for a grid fault is the collective response of all WGs, which depends on the wind speed approaching the WG. Thus, the dynamic response of a WPP should be analyzed by taking the wake effect into consideration, because different wind speeds at WGs will result in different responses of the WPP. This paper analyzes the response of a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)-based offshore WPP with a grid fault taking into account the wake effect. To obtain the approaching wind speed of a WG in a WPP, we considered the cumulative impact of multiple shadowing and the effect of the wind direction. The voltage, reactive power, and active power at the point of common coupling of a 100 MW DFIG-based offshore WPP were analyzed during and after a grid fault under various wind and fault conditions using an EMTP-RV simulator. The results clearly demonstrate that not considering the wake effect leads to significantly different results, particularly for the reactive power and active power, which could potentially lead to incorrect conclusions and / or control schemes for a WPP.

  • The annual average of energy sources is continuously increasing at a rate of 5.8%, and particularly, the power generation proportion of new/renewable energy is increasing significantly. Furthermore, South Korea has established a national energy master plan for 2008-2030 and is aiming at obtaining approximately 11% of total energy production from the wind turbine sector. Although offshore wind turbines are similar to wind turbines installed on land, they require materials with excellent dynamic properties and durability to prevent damage due to seawater at the lower parts and connecting parts. The lower parts of wind turbines are submerged in seawater, and the upper and lower parts are connected by filling the connecting part with grout. This paper describes the test results of the process of determining the mix ratios to develop ultra-high grout for offshore wind turbines. There is virtually no relevant technology regarding grout for offshore wind turbines in South Korea that can be referenced for the process of determining the mix ratios. Therefore, tests were conducted for determining compression strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, density, constructability (floor test), and early strength by referencing a high-performance grout produced in South Korea, and the mixing process for achieving the goal strengths was described using the Korean Industrial Standards (KS) as the reference.

  • In this paper, the general electromagnetic design process of a 10-MW-class high-temperature superconducting (HTS) synchronous generator that is intended to be utilized for large scale offshore wind generator is discussed. This paper presents three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic design proposal and electrical characteristic analysis results of a 10-MW-class HTS synchronous generator for wind power. For more detailed design by reducing the errors of a two-dimensional (2D) design owing to leakage flux in air-gap, we redesign and analyze the 2D conceptual electromagnetic design model of the HTS synchronous generator using 3D finite element analysis (FEA) software. Then electrical characteristics which include the no-load and full-load voltage of generator, harmonic contents of these two load conditions, voltage regulation and losses of generator are analyzed by commercial 3D FEA software.

  • This paper suggests a structure of power control system in floating wave-offshore wind hybrid power generation system. We have developed an unified SCADA(Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system which can be used to monitor and control PCS(Power Conversion System) based on IEC61850. The SCADA system is essential to perform the algorithm like proportional distribution and data acquisition, monitoring, active power, reactive power control in hybrid power generation system. IEC61850 is an international standard for electrical substation automation systems. It was made to compensate the limitations of the legacy industrial protocols such as Modbus. In order to test the proposed SCADA system and algorithm, we have developed the wind-wave simulator based Modbus. We have designed a protocol conversion device based on real-time Linux for the communication between Modbus and IEC61850. In this study, SCADA system consists of four 3MW class wind turbines and twenty-four 100kW class wave force generator.

  • As the demands for offshore wind power generation systems on a large scale have grown dramatically, and extensive developments in PMSG (Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) and DFIG (Doubly-fed Induction Generator) wind turbine system have been going on. However, the wind power systems have been more sophisticated, and their reliability becomes critical issues. Averagely, wind turbines have shut down for about a week per year for repairs and maintenance. Especially the high speed gearbox of DFIG is inevitable components for high power generation, but becomes one of the critical failures. In this paper, a new reliable gearless wind turbine structure is proposed. The gearless wind turbine can operate on a maximum power points by controlling the speed of a rotational stator. The proposed approach is verified by PSIM simulations, resulting in increased energy reliability.

  • In order to support various studies for assessment of onshore and offshore wind turbine system including foundations, the land-based version of 2MW PMSG direct drive wind turbine has been analyzed using HAWC2 that account for the coupled dynamics of the wind inflow, elasticity, and controls of the turbine. this work presents the steady-state response of the system and natural frequency of the first thirteen structure turbine modes as a function of wind speed. Rotor, generator speeds, pitch angle, power production, thrust force, deflections of tower and blade are compared for one case below and one case above the rated wind speed.

  • This paper proposes a control algorithm for permanent magnet synchronous generator with a back-to-back three-level neutral-point clamped voltage source converter in a medium-voltage offshore wind power system under unbalanced grid conditions. The proposed control algorithm particularly compensates for the unbalanced grid voltage at the point of common coupling in a collector bus of offshore wind power system. This control algorithm has been formulated based on the symmetrical components in positive and negative rotating synchronous reference frames under generalized unbalanced operating conditions. Instantaneous active and reactive power are described in terms of symmetrical components of measured grid input voltages and currents. Negative sequential component of ac input current is injected to the point of common coupling in the proposed control strategy. The amplitude of negative sequential component is calculated to minimize the negative sequential component of grid voltage under the limitation of current capability in a voltage source converter. The proposed control algorithm makes it possible to provide a balanced voltage at the point of common coupling resulting in the generated power of high quality from offshore wind power system under unbalanced network conditions.

  • The combined generator system by integrating several renewable energy sources can share the electrical infrastructure and therefore have the advantage of constructing not only the transmission system but also the power conversion system. Among the various combined renewable system, the wind power and wave power has a high possibility of future growth due to the economic feasibility in offshore environment. This kind of large-scale combined systems might be follow the determination by the transmission system operator's directions and control the output profile by focusing at PCC. However, both renewable energies are depend on the unpredictable environmental variation; it is needed to do the compensation devices. In this paper, the ESS compensation plan is proposed to do output determination of the combined generator system by paying attention to active power of utility grid with the analysis of the controllable elements of the wind and wave power generator. The improvement of the new application technique of the combined system is confirmed through using the PSCAD/EMTDC. The entire simulation process was designed by adopting the active power control according to the reference signal of TSO.
