  • The vertical distribution of eggs and larvae of anchovy. Engraulis japonica were studied based on ichthyoplankton and the temperature distribution in the southwestern part of the Sea of Japan off Korea during the summer of 1985 and 1986. Thermoclines occurred at the surface layer in the coastal area and at the sub-surface layer in the offshore area in the early summer of 1985. However, they occurred at the surface layer throughout the summer of 1986. Anchovy eggs and larvae were abundant in the offshore in 1985 and in the coastal area in 1986. It seems that the spawning ground of anchovy in 1985 shifted to the offshore owing to the sloping of thermoclines. According to the distribution layer of anchovy eggs by developmental stage, the eggs in the early developmental stage were abundant at $0\~30m$ layer about 06:00. But the eggs in the late developmental stage were abundant at $30\~100m$ loom layer about 24 : 00. These results suggest that anchovy spawn at the $0\~30m$ layer at night and eggs tend to sink to the $30\~100m$ layer in the course of development.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the relationship between climate factors and the catches in Korean offshore fisheries in recent three decades (1981 to 2010). Method: This study focused on seven types of fish species preferred in Korean cuisine. In the study, 10-year moving averages were used so that long-term trends could be easily identified. Results: Both air temperature and sea surface temperature (SST) on the coast of Korea rose in the period (p < 0.05). The rise in SST was significantly correlated with the rise in air temperature (p < 0.05), but not with precipitation. In the 2010s compared to in the 1981, catches of anchovy and squid greatly increased (p < 0.05), while catches of Alaska / walleye pollock has been almost extinct over the past 30 years. As such, cold-water fish species decreased or disappeared, and their fishing ground was replaced by warm-water fish species. Conclusions: These findings indicate that fish species caught in offshore fisheries of Korea have changed due to climate change, especially warming. This suggests that the warming of the Korean Peninsula may have a significant impact on the supply of fishery products and food security to Koreans in the near future.

  • The swimming behavior of pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) in the offshore sea cage of the brass fishing net was observed and analyzed by imaging sonar techniques. The cultured fish spent most of the time swimming a circular path along the circular cage wall and continued to swim only clockwise direction without completely changing the swimming direction during the 23-hour observation time. In addition, changed swimming behaviors were divided into four categories: (a) the behavior of a large group temporarily swimming in the opposite (counter clockwise) direction, (b) the behavior of a small group temporarily swimming in a small circular path, (c) the behavior swimming small circular path in the center of the cage, and (d) the behavior of a large group swimming across the center of the cage. The maximum swimming speed of the cultured fish was from 3.5 to 3.8 TL/s, the mode was from 1.2 to 1.4 TL/s and the swimming speed during the day time was faster than at night time. It was confirmed the cultured fish swam not only on the surface but also near the bottom net of the cage during the day, but swam mainly at the upper part of the cage at night.

  • This study documented and diagnosed the status and problems of coastal dredging and offshore disposal of dredged sediments in South Korea to improve assessment procedures for marine environmental impacts and develop effective management systems. A total of $729({\times}10^6)m^3$ of coastal sediment was dredged in the harbors during the period of 2001-2008. Most of dredged sediment was disposed to the land dumping sites whereas ocean disposal accounted for less than 5%. Ocean disposal areas were especially concentrated to the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) in the southeast of Busan, which is not only an important fishing area for fishermen, but also considered to be spawning and nursery ground for some commercial fish species. To minimize negative impacts of dredging and ocean disposal of coastal sediment on marine ecosystem and potential strife among coastal users, we suggest 1) in development projects involving ocean disposal, it should be mandatory to propose careful reuse plans in the land, and 2) guidelines of environmental assessment and consequence management programs should be developed and implemented.

  • The relationship between distribution of eggs and larvae of anchovy, Engraulis japonica, and environmental factors were studied using the data on the ichthyoplankton and zooplankton sampled vertically by net, and water temperature and salinity observed by CTB in the eastern waters of Korea in every two month in 1985. Anchovy eggs and larvae were occurred in June and August. They distributed in the warm water current which was high temperature and salinity in June. Egg and larval distribution area were moved to the offshore in August. It is likely that distribution of anchovy eggs and larval in June significantly correlate with hydroconditions in the eastern waters of Korea.

  • We developed an ecosystem indicator (EI) for the coastal and offshore areas of Korean waters. One of the major scientific challenges of this undertaking was to translate broad policy statements for ecosystem-based fisheries management (EBFM) into practical terms. Fish reproduction potential (FRP) was defined as an EI to describe the reproductive probability of adult fisheries resources in Korean waters. The FRP was estimated as the ratio of adult fish composition to total catch, catches (in metric tons) by species and by ecosystem, and fishery effort (in horse power per metric ton). The FRP indices of the East/japan Sea Ecosystem (EJSE), Yellow Sea Ecosystem (YSE), and East China Sea Ecosystem (ECSE) began to decrease after the mid-1980s, and the current indices have decreased further, at 0.63 (EJSE), 1.22 (YSE), and 0.68 (ECSE) index points compared to the indices of 1975, when similar catch amounts were recorded. Lower FRPs in the Korean marine ecosystems were the result of higher proportion of immature fisheries resources in the total catch. Because this kind of ecosystem-level indicator is thought to reflect scientific approaches to EBFM and to provide an important tool for assessing the current status of marine ecosystems with respect to both quantity and quality, more EIs should be developed for Korean waters.

  • In this study, system modeling and dynamic analysis of crane are conducted. Especially, among many different kinds of a crane system, the issues on crane operating problems installed on the vessel are considered. As well known, marine systems including cranes are exposed to various disturbances such as vessel motions, hydrodynamic forces, wave and wind attack, etc. In order to analysis the system dynamic with environmental conditions, the authors derived the nonlinear dynamic model of offshore crane and derived a linear model which is used for designing the control system. Using the obtained nonlinear and linear models, simulations were conducted to evaluate the usefulness of the obtained models. By simulation and result evaluation, the usefulness of the linear model, which presents the dynamics, is effectively verified.

  • A capstone design is regarded as one of cap courses in undergraduate engineering education because it requires most prerequisites and makes students experience real engineering design processes. There have been case studies to show how this subject should be organized, practiced, and optimized. This study shows one of the case studies by focusing offshore wind power, one of newly recognized renewable energy resources, especially targeting for the design of wind turbine foundation and submarine power cable protectors mainly because of current energy and global warming crisis. To pinpoint engineering design, the students'activities during the project and design procedures are monitored, evaluated, and recommended; hence, core factors are addressed to develop successful aim, theory, practice, and other necessities. These factors include creative problem solving abilities; recognition of engineering curriculum; selection of project theme based on significance, ripple effect, and education purpose; team organization by the full brain model; systematization of project process; realization of engineering design; and synthesis of evaluation. In the end, the aftermath and future works are discussed.

  • This study has designed and evaluated the safety of watertight damper for Offshore Rigs. The watertight damper is an improved design for conventional DN 350 butterfly valve. Numerical analysis has been performed to investigate the safety factor and seat leakage of the designed 3-type disk dampers. The structure analysis results present the deformations, the equivalent stresses and the safety factor. It was confirmed that the designed disk, rib-disk and streamlined disk of watertight damper are safe enough in maximum operating pressure of 0.98MPa. The results show that the disk damper had the smallest maximum deformations and stress among 3-type disk dampers and the safety factor was 4.3. Therefore it is confirmed that the disk damper has the most excellent strength. Also linear static structural analysis was individually conducted for disk and body. The results show that the maximum disk deformation was larger than the body deformation, Therefore the disk damper is causes no seat leakage.

  • Disease surveillance was performed to monitor the prevalence of fish pathogens in wild marine fish caught in coastal offshore water from February to October in 2008. A total of 401 fish samples were collected at set net or fish market at landing port on the coast of Pohang, Geoje, Yeosu and Jeju. In this study, 17 kinds of fish pathogens were isolated from 152 fish samples. The detection rates of parasites, bacteria or viruses were 21.4%, 17.0% and 2.7%, respectively. The detected parasites were Scutica, Trichodina, Cryptocaryon, Dactylogyrus, Microcotyle, Benedenia, Bivagina, Heteraxin, Caligus, Epistylis and nematode. The dominant bacterial pathogens were Vibrio, Streptococcus, Photobacterium and Psuedomonas. Red sea bream iridovirus (RSIV) and lymphocystis disease virus (LDV) were detected in 6 species of fish virus examined in this study. The detection rates of fish pathogens from Scorpaenidae, Monacanthidae, Pleuronectidae, Sparidae and Carangidae investigated over 30 samples were 59.2%, 48.4%, 34.2%, 30.6% and18.2%, respectively.
