  • Today, the media environment has changed dramatically with the development of Internet transmission technology, computer performance, and various media production technologies. In particular, video content is widely used every day through mobile device or computer connected to the Internet. In addition, the ability to produce video content today is more important than ever, as the use of video content is also increasing in the area of information delivery and communication over the Internet. In this study, it was developed a liberal education curriculum in universities for the production of video content. The developed curriculum was composed of a combination of an online curriculum for theory and an offline curriculum for practicum. In the online curriculum, a 54 DOOR contents were developed to allow students to learn the theoretical knowledge and basic making techniques related to the production of video content. In an offline 15-week practicum curriculum, it covered the practical training contents of video content production that should be acquired every week. This developed liberal education curriculum aims to give non-major students in universities the opportunity to learn the technology of producing video content and to foster the ability to communicate in the media environment by using the video content produced.

  • This paper presents a design of a speech to sign language converter for deaf and hard of hearing people. The device is low-cost, low-power consumption, and it can be able to work entirely offline. The speech recognition is implemented using an open-source API, Pocketsphinx library. In this work, we proposed a context-oriented language model, which measures the similarity between the recognized speech and the predefined speech to decide the output. The output speech is selected from the recommended speech stored in the database, which is the best match to the recognized speech. The proposed context-oriented language model can improve the speech recognition rate by 21% for working entirely offline. A decision module based on determining the similarity between the two texts using Levenshtein distance decides the output sign language. The output sign language corresponding to the recognized speech is generated as a set of sequential images. The speech to sign language converter is deployed on a Raspberry Pi Zero board for low-cost deaf assistive devices.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate implications for future STEAM education by analyzing the surveys by the in-service teachers who participated in the Advanced STEAM Teacher Training Program(ASTTP) for raising interests and understanding of science and technology and nurturing STEAM literacy and problem-solving ability of students. ASTTP was developed for promoting 'teacher competence for STEAM.' ASTTP is a 60-hour program(4 credits), which includes offline intensive course of 38 hours, online training course of 12 hours, a course of implementation at schools for 5 hours, and a workshop for 5 hours (based on the 2014 program). For the offline intensive course, teachers take various professional development classes and activities, such as open-laboratory tours, advanced experiments, mentoring programs, and team projects as well as lectures on diverse disciplines. For the online course, teachers take online classes freely while they are encouraged to work with other teachers in groups. After taking both online and offline courses, the teachers are required to implement their STEAM lesson plans in their classrooms. Finally at the workshop, some selected teachers share how successfully they have implemented STEAM education. About 700 teachers have successfully taken the program from 2012 to 2014. Based on the surveys by the teachers, the program has been modified and improved. Our analysis shows increased professional development in STEAM education for the participating teachers. This study can provide some implication and helpful insights for people who need to develop and manage teacher training programs for STEAM education and other education programs in general.

  • Traditional face-to-face university education has shifted its course to combine the advantages of both online and offline education in a blended-learning approach. However, there is still much that is unknown about the actual effect of blended learning, particularly it's learning outcomes in terms of cost effectiveness. This study qualitatively examines the costs and the learning outcomes of blended learning at an on-line college and off-line university. Online college level English pedagogy courses and blended with offline operations at an online university were studied across two semesters in terms of the quality of education, and both direct and indirect cost savings. Other causes for various learning outcomes and cost implications are proposed and validated.

  • Recently, due to the standard of a new browser developed by the Google and Mozilla "Service Worker", future users is expected to be able to make use of favorite Web sites offline. Google's is, Web sites have developed a standard of a new browser so as to always respond to user requests. Service Worker, websites that provide space capable of offline work to the user's browser to store various document information, to provide the necessary resources. Then, in order to greatly reduce the data exchange operations between the browser and the server, the speed of the Web page increases. Not only cooks as native app that can use the Web application offline, in that us to also further enhance the characteristics of an existing Web application that is running without installing destructive high technology. Service worker specifications, use experience of Web application is very can be improved, is an innovative technology indicates the version of the web evolve as the future of the platform. Service Worker is not included in HTML5 standard final, is currently being continued standardization. Future Service Worker technology I expect what kind of thing unfolds when applied to the Web browser.

  • Many problems with the offline class, which is the traditional education type in corporations or universities, were indicated and people hoped that e-learning, which is web-based instruction, would solve these problems. However, e-learning also has weak points in that it should be self-paced and media-based in many ways. Therefore, when considering the good and weak points of offline classes and e-learning, blended learning seems to be necessary. Until now, blended learning has usually been used in corporations, and there have been almost no studies on the effectiveness or management of blended learning in universities. Thus, in this study, I would like to design blended classes, manage them at the level of university classes, and verify the effectiveness of blended classes, by comparing academic achievement, student participation, and student satisfaction. The subject students who signed up for Computer & Technology at C University in 2005 were divided into three study groups: offline class, online class, and blended class. The offline class was taught using the traditional class teaching method. For the online class and the blended class, multimedia contents were developed and a different LMS was used. The results of 13 weeks of teaching are as follows. For the academic achievement in the offline, online and blended classes, there was no statistically significant difference (f=2.387, p=.096). But when comparing the average achievement, the average of the blended class was higher than that of the other classes, so that it can be said that the blended class has positive effects on academic achievement. Second, when comparing the learners' participation in the online class and the blended class, the total posts were 85 and 138 respectively, which shows a considerable difference. The hit counts for each post in the online class and the blended class are 10 and 20, respectively. Moreover, the login counts for subjects are 3 in the online class and 4 in the blended class. In the questionnaire for the students' academic satisfaction in the online class and the blended class, all of the 15 items showed higher satisfaction in the blended class. Considering all these results, if adequate media are properly combined, the blended class is better than either the pure online class or the pure offline class.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate factors that could bring about successful implementation of extensive reading using online/offline blended English library system called 'Reading Gate' in primary and secondary schools. Although there are a great number of studies on effects of various extensive reading on linguistic, cognitive, and affective development, few studies have investigated how extensive reading programs can be implemented at large scale, e.g., whole school level. After analyzing students' reading levels in 200 schools using the same online extensive reading program called Reading Gate, results showed that while some schools were successful, others were not. Five primary and 13 middle schools were selected as successful schools. Data on implementation of the program of schools was gathered. Eighteen teachers and seven headteachers took part in the interview. After analyzing these data on the implementation of the extensive reading program, results revealed that the following five factors for successful implementation of blended extensive reading programs: online level-up system, teacher intervention, integration with the curriculum, school-level support, and parents' awareness of literacy. This suggests that each factor might have contributed to the successful implementation of the extensive reading program at large scale. Implications and applications of this finding are discussed in this study.

  • Purpose: This study examined the effects of an educational program for fathers on improving father-infant interactions, child-rearing knowledge, and attachment. Methods: In this quasi-experimental study, the participants were recruited by convenience sampling among fathers with infants (2-6 months of age) residing in three districts of Seoul. Fifteen participants in the experimental group and 17 participants in the control group completed the follow-up investigation. A 5-week online and offline intervention program with five sessions was provided to the experimental group. The data were analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEEs). Results: There was a significant difference in the change in father-infant interaction scores of the experimental group, especially in the caregiver aspect with a significance level of .100 in time and group-to-group interactions (B=6.46, p=.051, 95% confidence interval [CI]=-0.02-12.94). The changes between the groups and times were not statistically significant when it came to infant development knowledge and father-infant attachment. Conclusion: We conclude that hybrid online and offline education should be implemented as an effective method to improve fathers' interactions with their children based on accurate knowledge about infant development.
