Development of a real-time simulation model for high-speed and multibody tracked vehicles is difficult because they involve hundreds of highly nonlinear equations. In the development of a reliable tracked vehicle model for real-time simulation, it is helpful to use an off-line tracked vehicle model developed by considering all the degrees of freedom of each element. This paper presents a step-by-step procedure for the development of a real-time simulation model based on the off-line tracked vehicle model. The road input data, Profile IV, is used for the real time simulation and simulation results are compared with vehicle test results obtained in the military test field. It is noted that the simulation results are quite close to the test results.

A mathematical model was developed to investigate the mechanical interrelation between soil characteristics and main design factors of a tracked vehicles , and predict the tractive performance of the tracked vehicles. Based on the mathematical model, a computer simulation program(TPPMTV98) was developed in this study. The effectiveness of the developed model was verified by comparing the predicted drawbar pulls using TPPMTV98 with measured ones from traction tests with a tracked vehicle reconstructed for test in loam soil with moisture content of 18.92%(d.b). The drawbar pulls measured by the TPPMTV98 were well matched to the measured ones. Such results implied that the model developed in this study could estimate the drawbar pulls well at various soil conditions , and would be very useful as a simulation tool for designing a tracked vehicle and predicting its tractive performance.
When an off-road tracked vehicle travels, an engine thrust that is transmitted to the continuous track induces a shearing action on the soil-track interface. Consequently, the relative displacement known as slip displacement takes place on the soil-track interface, which develops an associated soil thrust acting as a traction force. For the loose or soft ground conditions, an excessively large slip displacement can be required for the development of the desired soil thrust which will make the tracked vehicle mobile and therefore the outer surface of the continuous track is generally designed to protrude with grousers. This paper fundamentally studied the effect of grousers on the soil thrust of off-road tracked vehicles. Based on the soil-track interaction theory, a new soil thrust assessment method that properly takes into account the effect of grousers was developed. Also, the soil thrust of off-road tracked vehicles equipped with a number of grousers was evaluated using the developed assessment method. The results showed that grousers increased the soil thrust of the continuous track, enhancing the overall tractive performance of off-road tracked vehicles. These effects were more obvious as the height of grouser increased and the spacing of grouser decreased; thus, it is concluded that the grouser which has smaller shape ratio (span of the grouser to a grouser height) significantly enhances off-road tracked vehicle's performance.
When a tracked vehicle travels off-road, shearing action and ground sinkage occur on the soil-track interface and severely affect tractive performance of the tracked vehicle. Especially, the ground sinkage, which is induced by vehicle's weight (hereinafter referred to as static sinkage) and longitudinal forces in the direction of travel producing slip (hereinafter referred to as slip sinkage), develops soil resistance, directly restricting the tractive performance of an off-road tracked vehicle. Thus, to assess the tractive performance of an off-road tracked vehicle, it is imperative to take both of static sinkage and slip sinkage into consideration. In this research, a series of model track experiments was conducted to investigate the slip sinkage which has not been clarified. Experiment results showed that the slip sinkage increased with increasing the slip ratio, but the increasing rate gradually decreased. Also, the slip sinkage was found to increase as relative density of soil decreased and imposed vertical load increased. From the experiment results, the normalized slip sinkage defined as slip sinkage to static sinkage calculated in the identical condition was investigated, and an empirical equation for the slip sinkage was developed in terms of slip ratio, which allows vehicle operators to predict the slip sinkage in a given soil and operating conditions.

2 DOF half-car model with 6 semi-active suspension units is utilized to evaluate the tracked vehicle dynamic performance simulated by several suspension control algorithms. The target of this research is to improve the ride comfort to maintain operator's handling capability when the tracked vehicle travels fast on the rough road. The control algorithms for suspension systems, such as full state feedback active, full state feedback semi-active, sky-hook active, sky-hook semi-active, and on-off systems, are evaluated and analyzed in view point of ride comfort. The dynamic performances of vehicle are expressed and evaluated by vibratory characteristic evaluation curves, performance indices and frequency characteristic curves. The simulation results show that the performances of sky-hook algorithms for ride comfort nearly follow those of full state feedback algorithms and on-off algorithm is recommendatory when the vehicle runs relatively fast.

A computer program was developed for the simulation of mobility and tractive performance of tracked off-road vehicles. Input parameters for the simulation involve those characterizing track and power drive line of a vehicle and soil conditions upon which the vehicle operates. The simulation predicts tractive performance in terms of soil thrust and motion resistance of track device and mobility performance in terms of the maximum speed, time-distance and time-speed relation that a vehicle can obtain under the given soil conditions. It also determines whether or not the vehicle can move in those conditions. An example of performing simulation was presented and its results showed that the performance prediction was reasonably in a good agreement with the published data.

In this study, a real-time simulation model was developed for tracked vehicles with in-arm type semi-active hydro-pneumatic suspension unit using MATLAB S-functions. Since the vehicle model uses relative coordinates and massless link elements, the developed model has an enhanced analytic time performance. Through the comparison of simulation results with multi-body software(DADS), the vehicle model is verified. A controller using on-off skyhook control algorithm is designed with the pilot-centre]led proportional valve based on conventional damper characteristics. Exploiting the developed tracked vehicle model with other subsystem model such as a controller model, a suspension unit model, and a test road model, computer simulations are carried out. Control simulation results with the developed tracked vehicle model show that the semi-active suspension control system has a better performance than the conventional suspension system.
The tracked vehicle travel on off rod and on rod. So the tracked vehicle need a sufficient stiffness and a lightweight. In this study we performed FEA for the track vehicle and performed topology optimization based on the results of FEA. The displacements of road wheel are used as displacement constraint for topology optimization. We performed topology optimization with the control of the frame size which is the results of topology optimization and suggested the shaped of the tracked vehicle bottom plate of topology optimization
In this paper, to estimate the effectiveness of the tractive performance prediction model(TPPMTV98) which was developed to predict the tractive performance of flexible tracked vehicles in previous paper, the experimental substantiation of the TPPMTV98 were conducted with the reconstructed tracked vehicle on the loam soil with the moisture content of 18.92%, and bevameter was constructed in order to measure soil properties in situ. The drawbar pulls measure were compared with predicted ones. As a result, the predicted drawbar pulls by the TPPMTV98 were well matched to the measured ones. Such results implied that the TPPMTV98 could well estimate the drawbar pulls at given soil conditions, and would be very useful as a simulation tool for designing a flexible tracked vehicle and predicting its tractive performance.
Maintaining track tension in tracked vehicles minimizes the excessive load on the tracks and prevents the peal-off of tracks from the road-wheel, and adequately guarantees the stable and improved driving of the tracked vehicles. However, the track tension cannot be easily measured due to the limitation in the sensor technology, harsh environment, etc. In this study, the track tension is estimated in real-time from the measurable signals of tracked vehicles and controlled based on a fuzzy logic controller. The proposed control system is implemented on tracked vehicles and its performance is evaluated under various driving conditions.
