Compared to the noise limits (CAN7) specified in ICAO Annex 16 for civil helicopters, the Lynx helicopter equipped with BERP blades has only 0.2 EPNdB margin in the approach case although it has more than 4 EPNdB margin in fly-over and take-off conditions. The objectives of the study described in this paper were to devise a low noise main rotor blade for the Lynx using UEAF combined with the high resolution airload model ACROT. A design requirement is that the new blade, KBERP (Korean BERP) blade should achieve a significant reduction in noise during approach(at least 6EPNdB margin) without any noise penalty in fly-over and take-off conditions and minimal performance penalty. It was decided to investigate a tip modification to the BERP blade, employing the twin vortex concept to reduce the BVI noise and to retain the excellent high speed performance characteristics of BERP. Through the parametric study, the KBERP blade with optimized twin vortices has at least a 9 EPNdB noise margin in approach flight condition with only a small penalty in fly-over and take-off conditions. The KBERP tip is thus a very cost effective wav to reduce BVI noise during approach.

This paper presents on the development of wheel-terrain interaction device using low-priced sensors, which will be used to predict the drawbar pull and optimal slip of off-road vehicle in real time. The essential variables obtained in the device to predict the mobility of vehicles are determined based on semi-empirical model describing the wheel-terrain interaction. Using the developed device, the experiments about the wheel-terrain interaction were performed on the soil of the Jumunjin standard sand, which yielded dynamic weight, motor driving torque, drawbar pull, and sinkage with respect to wheel slip ratio. Finally, the repeatability of the measured data are verified through repeating the experiments three times on the same condition.

To protect the environment, the regulation of emissions from off-road engines which are relatively neglected, is being reinforced. This paper deals with the robust design of off-road diesel engines considering the emission characteristics. Measurements of the NOx and PM levels based on the DOE were carried out. The injector hole number, injection timing and EGR rate were selected as the control factors. The orthogonal arrays table $L_9(3^3)$ was made from 2 or 3 levels for each factor and measurements of emissions were accomplished based on the table. The small-the-better SN ratio according to the Taguchi method was evaluated. The ANOVA (analysis of variance) for the SN ratio was conducted. The injection timing on the NOx emissions and the EGR rate on the PM have the largest effect on the low-load operation condition. The confidence levels of the control factors were more than 90%.
Meeting the touchdown point (TDP) target box is one of the challenges during catenary riser installation, especially for deep water or ultra-deep water riser systems. TDP location mismatch compared to the design can result in variation of riser configuration, additional hang-off misalignment, and extra bending loads going into the hang-off porch. A good understanding of the key installation parameters can help to minimize this mismatch, and ensure that the riser global response meets the design criteria. This paper focuses on investigating the potential factors that may affect the touchdown point location, and addressing the challenges both in the design stage and during installation campaign. Conventionally, the vessel offset and current are the most critical factors which may affect the TDP movement during installation. With the offshore exploration going deeper and deeper in the sea (up to 10,000ft), other sources such as the seabed slope and seabed soil stiffness are playing an important role as well. The impacts of potential sources are quantified through case studies for steel catenary riser (SCR) and lazy wave steel catenary riser (LWSCR) in deep water application. Investigations through both theoretical study and numerical validation are carried out. Furthermore, design recommendations are provided during execution phase for the TDP mismatch condition to ensure the integrity of the riser system.
The performances of lifting surfaces are particularly critical in specific flight conditions like takeoff and landing. Different systems can be used to increase the lift and drag coefficients in such conditions like slat, flap or ailerons. Nevertheless they increase the losses and make difficult the mechanical design of wing structures. Morphing surfaces are a compromise between a right increase in lift and a reduction of parts movements involved in the actuation. Furthermore these systems are suitable for more than one flight condition with low inertia problems. So, flap and slats can be easily substituted by the corresponding morphing shapes. This paper deals with a genetic optimization of an airfoil with morphing flap with an already optimized nose. Indeed, two different codes are used to solve the equations, a finite volume code suitable for structured grids named ZEN and the EulerBoundary Layer Drela's code MSES. First a number of different preliminary design tests were done considering a specific set of design variables in order to restrict the design region. Then a RANS optimization with a single design point related to the take-off flight condition has been carried out in order to refine the previous design. Results are shown using the characteristic curves of the best and of the baseline reported to outline the computed performances enhancements. They reveal how the contemporary use of a morphing acting on the nose of the main component and the trailing edge of the flap drive towards a total not negligible increment in lift.
The flow characteristics in the blade passage of a low speed axial flow fan have been investigated by experimental analysis using a rotating hot-wire sensor for design and off-design operating conditions. The results show that the tip leakage vortex is moved upstream when flow rate is decreased, thus disturbing the formation of wake flow near the rotor tip. The tip leakage vortex interfaces with blade pressure surface, and results in high velocity fluctuation near the pressure surface. From the relative velocity distributions near the rotor tip, large axial velocity decay is observed at near stall condition, which results in large blockage compared to that at the design condition. Througout the flow measurements using a quasi-orthogonal measuring points to the tip leakage vortex, it is noted that the radial position of the tip leakage vortex is distributed between 94 and 96 percent span for all flow conditions. High spectrum density due to the large fluctuation of the tip leakage vortex is observed near the blade suction surface below the frequency of 1000 Hz at near stall condition.

The frequency characteristics in an axial flow fan operating at a design and three off-design operating conditions have been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation of a tip leakage vortex and a wake flow. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor. a fixed and a moving ones, were introduced to obtain a cross-correlation coefficient between two sensors as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region of higher flow rates than those in the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition. Detailed wake flow just downstream of the rotor blade was also measured by the rotating hot-wire sensor. The peak frequency of a high velocity fluctuation due to Karman vortex shedding in the wake region is mainly observed at the higher flow rate condition than that in the design point.

The optimal method to intuitively and systematical design hypersonic intakes is reported. In Mach 7 flow condition, the hypersonic intake model designed by theoretical approach is corrected by CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis based on viscous flow condition, leading to the optimum hypersonic intake model. For performance comparison with CFD analysis, the double ramp intake is superior to the single ramp intake. Furthermore, in the off-design condition, the performance of the designed hypersonic intake is little degraded.

In this study, a mathematical model was suggested to predict the maximum steering torque of a tractor on off-road. The model took into account the characteristics of soil, including the pressure-sinkage and the shearing characteristics as well as the primary design parameters of steering system of the tractor. The efficiency of the developed model was verified via comparison of the maximum steering torque predicted using the model with those measured from steering torque test. The results showed that the predicted maximum steering torques were in good agreement with the measured ones from the steering test on soft soil in which tractor is generally operated. Thus, we concluded that the model developed in this study could be used for prediction of maximum steering torque of a tractor.
Unsteady nature of a tip leakage vortex in an axial flow fan operating at a design and off-design operating conditions has been investigated by measuring the velocity fluctuation in a blade passage with a rotating hotwire probe sensor. Two hot-wire probe sensors rotating with the fan rotor were also introduced to obtain the cross-correlation coefficient between the two sensors located in the vortical flow as well as the fluctuating velocity. The results show that the vortical flow structure near the rotor tip can be clearly observed at the quasi-orthogonal planes to a tip leakage vortex. The leakage vortex is enlarged as the flow rate is decreased, thus resulting in the high blockage to main flow. The spectral peaks due to the fluctuating velocity near the rotor tip are mainly observed in the reverse flow region at higher flow rates than the peak pressure operating condition. However, no peak frequency presents near the rotor tip for near stall condition.
